See thread help: '& the lion is the king of all'? (2004) for a transcription of the text in Sydney Gilpin, The Songs and Ballads of Cumberland (Linda's ultimate source for the words), as transcribed in Longfellow, Poems of Places, 1876; and a link to Gilpin's book at the Internet Archive, both provided by Masato, who mentioned it a few posts -and three years- ago. It answers all questions; there's no need to guess blindly as Mark has. Linda only modernized the text very slightly.

I wonder why people so often feel the need to revive old discussions in order to provide wrong answers to questions that have already been answered correctly?

I've just listened to it very closely, and I agree with Stewie - "She's howked a grave..." Or that's how it's pronounced. And "sabilline" with a short 'a', not long as in 'sable'.

Thank you, Stewie. By now, the trancriptions of recordings of the Child Ballads are about 1.000, but I am also interested in traditional songs that are not in this ballad canon. I've put together these texts with the help of a lot people, many from this site, sometimes the singers themselves. Of course, I am ready to share this collection with the people interested in it. Best wishes. R

I posted a similar version of "THE SUN SHINES FAIR ON CARLISLE WALL" at help: '& the lion is the king of all'?. It'll be helpful.

Hi Roberto

What a beaut version of 'Cruel Mother' this is. I included it in a presentation once for the Oz national festival that was given the flick (Oz for rejected).

Anyhow, the first missing word is 'houked' from 'houk' meaning 'to dig'. The second is 'sabilline' = 'sable'.

I trust your ballad project is going well. You must have hundreds by now.

All the best, Stewie.

You could always try the direct approach: enquiries@fellside.com

(If you mail a copy of the words as posted above it shouldn't be too much effort for linda to read and correct)

I can't get two words (on the 4th and 6th stanza), please help me complete this text. Thanks. R

The Sun Shines Fair (The Cruel Mother)
Linda Adams, on Ballads, Fellside. Learned from her English teacher, Ann Dickens. A version is printed in Gilpin's Songs and Ballads of Cumberland. Paul Adams added a first verse from another version.

There lived a Lady in the North
The Sun Shines Fair on Carlisle Wall
And she had a child by her father's clerk
And the Lion shall be Lord of All

She leaned her back against a thorn
The Sun Shines Fair on Carlisle Wall
And there she has her young babe born
And the Lion shall be Lord of All

Smile not so sweet, my bonnie babe
The Sun Shines Fair on Carlisle Wall
For you smile so sweet, you smile me dead
And the Lion shall be Lord of All

She's (....) grave by the light of the moon
The Sun Shines Fair on Carlisle Wall
And she's buried her sweet babe in
And the Lion shall be Lord of All

As she was going to the Church
The Sun Shines Fair on Carlisle Wall
She spied a sweet babe in the porch
And the Lion shall be Lord of All

Oh, bonnie babe, if you were mine
The Sun Shines Fair on Carlisle Wall
I'd clad you in silk and ....(...line ?)
And the Lion shall be Lord of All

O mother mine, when I was thine
The Sun Shines Fair on Carlisle Wall
To me you were not half so kind
And the Lion shall be Lord of All

But now I'm in the Heavens High
The Sun Shines Fair on Carlisle Wall
And you have the pains of Hell to die
And the Lion shall be Lord of All
