(2004) for a transcription of the text in Sydney Gilpin, The Songs and Ballads of Cumberland (Linda's ultimate source for the words), as transcribed in Longfellow, Poems of Places, 1876; and a link to Gilpin's book at the Internet Archive, both provided by Masato, who mentioned it a few posts -and three years- ago. It answers all questions; there's no need to guess blindly as Mark has. Linda only modernized the text very slightly.

I wonder why people so often feel the need to revive old discussions in order to provide wrong answers to questions that have already been answered correctly?

I've just listened to it very closely, and I agree with Stewie - "She's howked a grave..." Or that's how it's pronounced. And "sabilline" with a short 'a', not long as in 'sable'.

Thank you, Stewie. By now, the trancriptions of recordings of the Child Ballads are about 1.000, but I am also interested in traditional songs that are not in this ballad canon. I've put together these texts with the help of a lot people, many from this site, sometimes the singers themselves. Of course, I am ready to share this collection with the people interested in it. What a beaut version of 'Cruel Mother' this is. I included it in a presentation once for the Oz national festival that was given the flick (Oz for rejected).

Anyhow, the first missing word is 'houked' from 'houk' meaning 'to dig'. The second is 'sabilline' = 'sable'.

I trust your ballad project is going well. You must have hundreds by now.
