My husband hates onion and I don't--I've been trying to convince him that whatever he orders in a restaurant he needs to request no onion. He did that once in an Outback and the manager came over to make sure he knew there was onion in the pico d gallo. My husband looked at him in utter confusion until I assured the manager that he was not going to have an allergic reaction and sue the restaurant, he just hates onions!

Hey Guest, I just tried to access the Larry, Curly and Moe link. I was given 'access denied'. What gives? It was a shot of three onions. Like, they weren't even doing anything bad! They're ONIONS. Or they were, anyway. Sorry about that. Before I posted I tested the link. It worked then. (I suspect they were doing bad things while no one was lookin' and they got caught by Mr Google.)

Up above, GUEST asked "I wonder if you'd ever find a vegetarian that doesn't like onions?"

Well, I don't know. But my wife, while she will eat meat on occasion, doesn't much like meat and tries to eat vegetarian as much as possible. But she is *allergic* to onions! She prepares vegetarian dishes that I have enjoyed (much to my surprise!), using garlic and other herbs, spices, and seasonings. But no onions, I'm pleased to say!

Just say no to onions.

Don

I pity you onion haters. The easiest way, bar none, to impress your SO with your cooking skills is to simply have a panful of garlic and onions simmering on the stove when he or she gets home from work. It doesn't matter if you don't have the foggiest idea what you're really going to cook, the onions and garlic just make it smell like you've been working your ass off. Play your cards right and you can actually convince SO to take over the cooking for the evening since you've already made such an auspicious beginning.

i got a surprise once...
my ex baked
an onion pie...red onions
and lots of cinamon
i ddin;'t believe it would
taste so good..but it did!!

you saute' them first thusly:

http://www.cooksrecipes.com/appetizer/onion-pie-recipe.html

Onion Pie

5 large sweet onions, thinly sliced
2 tablespoons butter or margarine
Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste
1 (15-ounce) package refrigerated pie crusts (or your own pastry recipe)
Pimiento-stuffed olives for garnish

   1. Saute onion in butter in a large skillet over low heat for 45 minutes to an hour or until golden in color. Stir in salt and pepper.
   2. Unfold 1 pie crust, and roll to press out fold lines. Place on a lightly greased baking sheet; roll to a 13-inch circle.
   3. Spoon onion mixture onto piecrust, leaving a 1-inch border; lightly brush border with water.
   4. Roll remaining pie crust to press out fold lines; cut into 1/2-inch strips. Arrange in a lattice design over filling; fold edges up over lattice, pressing to seal. Place olives in some of lattice openings.
   5. Bake at 375*F (190*C) on lower oven rack for 25 to 30 minutes or until golden brown. Serve warm or room temperature.

Makes 8 to 10 appetizer servings.

guess i should put this in a new thread///Onion LOVER

EUREKA. This thread has open my mind to a MILLION DOLLAR BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY. Heck, we are gonna get RICH.

OK, OK, OK. Close your eyes and--wait, you're gonna have to keep yer eyes open or you won't be able to read the screen. OK, OK, OK. Keep your eyes open. Let's move along here. A line of deodorants, toothpastes and perfumes using an ONION base. We could have names like 'Purple Onion Desire' or 'Scallion Mist for Rap Singers' (that would be shortened to Rap-Scallion, LOL). The marketing might be a bit difficult, but that's a small detail in the grand scheme of things. Internation Monetary Fund is gonna be calling us for loans.

I think it's a winner. Well?

I wonder if you'd ever find a vegetarian that doesn't like onions? That would be tough. I reckon all you meat eaters, who don't like the glorious onion, have had your taste buds eroded by years of blood, sinew and fat.

I once visited a restaurant and asked the waitress if the chicken salad had onions in it. She told me no and had never heard of anyone putting onions in chicken salad. I said ok and ordered the chicken salad. It was LOADED with onions....red onions. The chunks were the size of a nickel and anyone who ever looked at the chicken salad would have had to been blind to miss it. She put up quite the fuss when I sent it back. Go figure!

Besides - why adulterate the onion with meat? A good onion sandwich is quite satisying. A baked onion, tasty, Roast garlic spread on a bit of pita, yummmmm!

And another thing

The thing that sticks in my gullet is the ignorance of serving staff. Onion is an onion - right. "Yes never said ought about pickle" !!! "french dressing? Oh has it got garlic in - well you learn something every day" - no you don't - evidently.

"But it is a very nice sauce".

Well all you oninion immersed - have you ever tasted meat?

You reckon? Nah - you textured it, and tasted onion. How boring.

My Canadian cousin reckoned chicken was bland as cardboard without garnish etc. So she cooked a Canadian Chicken and guess what? All the chicken flavour was bred, fed & chemicalled out just so it didn't spoil the onions!

You don't know what your missing? I do - the taste of meat, the goodness, the quality.

Onions and spices were invented to hide off flavours - rancid meat anyone?

BTW I don't salt or pepper - the quack reckoned I got enough sodium from a balanced diet. I don't have heart trouble neither.

I once said to a group of friends something like "If I had a magic wand, and could cause onions to disappear from the face of the Earth for good and all, I would do it!" One of them replied "No - use the wand to make yourself like onions!" It was an interesting thought, but I think I would still like to get rid of the onions.

Onions, scallions, chives, leeks - away with them all!

(of course, there are other opinions.)

Don

Chives are an entirely different story. I have 5 pots of them growing out on my deck at this very moment...I LOVE THEM...and they smell SO good! A bowl of soup isn't complete without some fresh chives sprinkled on top! YUM!

Some people here will never experience Mongolian Beef and Scallions at a Chinese restaurant. How sad.

And what, pray tell, to you put in you Tuna salad, if not scallions? It ain't tuna without scallions.

Oh, yeah, I nearly forgot, the smell of wild onions growing on my lawn in the spring. It makes it worth while to have to mow, just to get that smell in the air.

yes, yes, yes!... I got a sandwich at a shop one day.."No onions, please.."...and got in my car and headed down the road, unwrapping sandwich to find....onions! Even though I was late, drove back to shop and plonked bag on counter saying, "I asked for NO onions". The girl in the corner who had made it looked up with this WELL! expressions and said, "I like onions!"
.....I think it's almost a hopeless cause.

I did get one guy trained at a shop where I was a semi-regular for a few months. After watching him do this automatic dip into the onion bin several times and making him start over, he finally looked up at me and said..."Oh, hi...let's see, you want a slice of red onion between 2 slices of white onion-right?" I never had any more trouble...there.

I know one woman whose idea of making soup was to cut up a bunch of onion...then see if she had anything to go with it!

(I can put up with small amounts of onion as deepbackground flavoring in some dishes, as long as I can't actually identify any pieces)
