Reading the discussion in the "Beverley Sessions" thread about the meaning of the word "sessions" I was reminded that in the East Riding the term "barn dance" is used for events that others might call "dance", "club dance" or "dancers dance".I would expect a barn dance to contain fairly straightforward dances but could tell from the publicity that this might not be so. Well you wouldn't get Hilary Herbert all the way from Cardiff to call Cumberland square etc. instead of her usual mindbenders would you?

But as "fiddler" & "Les from Hull" say that's fine if people know what they are getting.

The problem arises (especially at Folk Festivals) when you don't. So you rush to a NW clog workshop expecting a step dancing and find that its a Morris team. Festival organisers need to make it clear in their programmes so that people who are not "in the know" can tell if an event is for them when there so many tempting things on offer.

If I saw a workshop advertised as NW Clog that's exactly what I would expect - a clog morris workshop. The other sort I would expect to be labelled as solo clog or step clog and is often just clog. I agree with you about barn dance though, did you actually go to it and find out what was being called?

Thats just my point. Those in the know ,know what they are getting, those who have just discovered e.g.clogging, Irish dancing, don't know the subtleties. At a festival you dont have time for deep research in the programme, it should be self explanitory. And by the time you've trudged across town and found out you've missed 2 other workshops you would have enjoyed.

Local usage is a bit different, it only confuses visitors, at a festival everyone is a visitor.
