Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: GUEST,Jon Date: 09 Aug 05 - 01:46 PM A question there though shambles is did I realy have the faith? The truth is to some degree it was "fighting talk" over here and didn't actualy equate to my expected outcome wich was like yours. The other side of that "faith coin" though is that I did believe the capabilty was there within the team. As for the 280 target, I think on the face of that game, a higher target could have been achievable and certainly looked that way until Flitoff got those 2. There was a point where say 280-3 would not have suprised me... but isn't that just cricket with all it's twists and turns? |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: The Shambles Date: 09 Aug 05 - 01:18 PM Perhaps Jon should have credit for his prediction. For he did have faith and predict an England victory at a time when others (me for one) were a lot less sure and he was only 20 or so runs short of predicting the final total. Interesting that a side has still to make more than 280 to win. As this run chase was started on the 3rd and and not the 5th - it is a bit surprising. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: Hrothgar Date: 09 Aug 05 - 07:08 AM Well done, Poms. I saw the last finish like that one twenty-odd years ago when Allan Border and Jeff Thomson nearly pulled off an equally unlikely victory at the MCG, and lost by three (again when the fast bowler was caught). There were 20,000 people at the MCG for a day that could have lasted just one ball and went for over an hour. Thommo's other claim to fame is that he made damn sure Kasper didn't go back to rugby (but I tried!). Now, who is going to explain this to the hotshot marketing men who decided we needed that Twenty 20 crap? |

Its not about how many you win by, but have you got the guts to take the pressure. England proved that they are up with the tops. Its great to see English bowlers giving the batsman a lot of bruises. Been a long time since we saw England dishing it out. That will make the Aussies think a bit. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: Shakey Date: 07 Aug 05 - 07:12 PM I nearly had a coronary, took me all day to calm down. Nice touch from Flintoff, the first person he went to was Lee, not to gloat but to congratulate him for nearly pulling it off. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: John O'L Date: 07 Aug 05 - 06:57 PM In the after-match interview Flintoff was asked if he thought England could win the ashes. "We've GOT to," he said. I like that. We've got a battle ahead. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: Alan Day Date: 07 Aug 05 - 06:39 PM The most exciting Test Match Ever! What a tail end fight back and what excitement. We did however make it difficult for ourselves with a bad second innings batting performance and the result was that we were lucky to win.The fighting spirit of this team pulled us through. This will be a big moral boost to the lads and it would not suprise me now if we pulled of an Ashes win. Warne and Flintoff were the stars and it was a shame that they both did not get man of the match awards. A great win over a great team. Al |

Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: The Shambles Date: 07 Aug 05 - 02:44 PM May I remind you Shambles the word Scotch is whisky, the people from Scotland are called SCOTS You may indeed remind me but perhaps I can remind you that this is a thread about cricket and England even had a Scotch captain once. As a resident in Scotland for twelve years I do not need reminding that (some) folk in Scotland do not like to be referred to as Scotch.*Smiles* And I have (in the earlier thread) made the point that many English people do indeed support the sporting endeavours of the Scotch and Welsh. I think that had Australia won - Warnes contribution to that victory would have made him man of the match. As England won - it was Flintoff's individual contribution to that victory that deserves to makes him the man of the match. Without his 73 and those sixes - there would have been no match. Nice to see him console Bret Lee at the end. That probably sealed it |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: GUEST,Jon Date: 07 Aug 05 - 02:25 PM Well as Flintoff got it, I'll go for him. |

Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: RobbieWilson Date: 07 Aug 05 - 01:49 PM The ball hit the glove but the hand was not on the bat. Not out would have been the correct decision |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: GUEST,Jon Date: 07 Aug 05 - 01:25 PM I get annoyed by the racing too but I can remember at least one occasion where they did manage to delay going over because of the state of the game. If they have to do it, wish they did it the other way round and make those with the satelite equipment (for Film 4?) watch the horse racing. I gather the cricket goes elsewhere next year which I think, even alowing for horse racing and ads, is a bit of a shame as I have liked thier coverage. Rain at Old Trafford eh? My bet with myself for the series was 3-1 to Australia with 1 draw. Perhaps that one will be the draw then... |

Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: The Shambles Date: 07 Aug 05 - 09:35 AM Perhaps a word for the umpires (it is a good job they are not Scotch)? Seeing their decisions subject to slo-mo and all the other gadgets and gizmos - the surprising thing is not that that they may sometimes get it wrong (in the spit seconds they have) but how often they are shown to be right. There are of course some good and not so good decisions but they do tend to cancel each other out. |

They sit in the pavilion all day if they are not batting. Having said all that - come on ENGLAND Stuff it up them big headed Aussies. Now I know a keeper I really would like but I don't think you would part with him... Lose Flintoff - you have (and are) to be joking. Funny thing with him though is when I first saw him, I think I would have lost him... I thought he was just going to be what you sometimes see over here branded as the next Botham but wasn't going to come to much. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: John O'L Date: 06 Aug 05 - 08:35 PM I don't think Oz can win this match now, but I didn't think the Springboks could beat the All Blacks either. Whatever happens, the series is alive. Jon, if you're picking a team for next test I'd lose G. Jones if I were you. Oh yeah, and Flintoff too. Lose Flintoff eh? |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: GUEST,Jon Date: 06 Aug 05 - 07:37 PM Looks like it did miss when MC went down... -------- I think I'd leave the team as it is. The minimum they will have achieved is to give the aussies a big scare and as you note they all seem to be pulling together as a team in the field. Perhaps with a bit more confidence the bating will improve. I think this one has offered us the best chance with McGrath out of action and possibly Ponting's strange (to me) decision on winning the toss but I do think we should be able to make a game of all these tests. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: RobbieWilson Date: 06 Aug 05 - 06:07 PM What a great, well balanced test this has been and it could still go either way. Just shows what a difference having McGrath in the team makes. Perhaps in order to keep the series interesting England should be allowed at the start of each match to pick a member of the Australian squad who would be ineligible to play. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: The Shambles Date: 06 Aug 05 - 04:43 PM That brave prediction has been noted. Whatever the outcome tomorrow - it is clear that the rest of the series will be tightly contested. And if only England can get someone other than Flintoff, Pietersen and to a lesser extent Trescothick and Strauss - to stay at the crease and get some runs - England should even win. Simon Jones at least stayed around long enough with Flintoff and it was only this parnership that gave Australia any sort of target to chase. It would only be honest to say that the rest have not really justified their selection as batsmen. With just a few more second innings runs - this game would have been over. Despite this - there does seem to be a fighting team spirit and everyone seems to know what to do in the field - so perhaps the team should be left as it is? Not that there appears to be too many altenatives.... |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: GUEST,Jon Date: 06 Aug 05 - 02:37 PM I'll stick with my last one for Australia - 260 all out. |

Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: The Shambles Date: 06 Aug 05 - 02:23 PM There will be some Sunday play after all..... It looks as if tomorrow Warne is going to have to win the game with his batting. Any predictions for the outcome? I think my money must now be on a tie. I suspect the bookies would now be making England favourites. It is probably more likely that they will get two wickets than Australia get their hundred or so runs - but who can tell with this contest? Bring it on........ |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: GUEST,Jon Date: 06 Aug 05 - 11:12 AM 5 minutes ago, I was thinking "it's no good, they are finding it too easy", now we get 2 Flintoff wickets! |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: The Shambles Date: 06 Aug 05 - 10:08 AM No test side has scored more than 280 to win on this ground. It is interesting that the bookies currently have Autralia as favourites to win. They are not often wrong. We will see if they are this time. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: The Shambles Date: 06 Aug 05 - 10:00 AM Well 181 and they didn't make the tea interval. It is just possible for England to still win - but with a batting performance like that one (a few notable exceptions)- would they deserve it? Warne's final tally was 7 - I think. A bowler that is definitly over-the-hill...... |

It looks as if Flintoff (the best England bowler) will not be able to bowl and as there will be no time pressure - the Australians will be able to make the required runs very easily. But I hope that I am proved completely wrong........ |

Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: ad1943 Date: 05 Aug 05 - 08:41 PM Gentlemen You are watching history with Warne. I have been watching Tests since the early 1950s and have never seen a bowler as good. I have seen Tyson, Statham, Roberts , Lillee, Thomson, Griffith, Garner, Snow, Lock, Benaud, Lindwall, Miller, Hall and countless others who were superb but this bloke is amazing. A good test this one Enjoy Allen from Oz |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: GUEST,Jon Date: 05 Aug 05 - 06:30 PM Agreed Alan, Warne is an outstanding bowler. I remember seeing him when he first played a test over here and was amazed and I was still amazed watching Strauss fall today. Mind you, having seen him spin the ball so often, I was probably even more amazed at his bouncer at Pieterson in the first test. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: Alan Day Date: 05 Aug 05 - 05:56 PM Although I am hoping England win this one and two more,I cannot but marvel at Shane Warne`s bowling. His two dismisals of Strauss were breath taking, but overall his bowling is a pleasure to watch. He will be sadly missed when he quits test cricket and it is rumoured that this is his last tour, but what a craftsman. This Ashes clash is so far living up to and surpassing all expectations.Out lads will fight to the finish win or lose. What a combination of Peterson and Flintoff, at last they both clicked together and with a bit of experience they will be feared by teams Worldwide.I must applaud the selectors for taking a chance on Peterson they would have come in for a lot of stick if he had let them down. Can we get another 250? We shall know tommorow. Al |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: The Shambles Date: 05 Aug 05 - 04:07 PM Warne's batting was 'iffy' but he is after-all - in the team for his bowling. Which on the evidence of the delivery that got Strauss's wicket - is worrying as the pitch is only going to favour him more. The only hope is if the match position does not allow Ponting to set the sort of close attacking fields that helped make Warne's bowling so effective at Lords. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: GUEST,Jon Date: 05 Aug 05 - 02:34 PM Overall, a very pleasing day for us and a very good position. I think I will be hopeful for a victory now. ------- What do the aussie's think of Warne's batting today? I'd thought he might at least have tried to stick around a while and I know he can bat well but he seemed to me to be almost intent on commiting suicide. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: The Shambles Date: 05 Aug 05 - 12:27 PM Well 99 to be exact. All England's batsmen have to do to win - is to bat for two days............That should be easy...... We will see. |

Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: A Wandering Minstrel Date: 05 Aug 05 - 08:06 AM Well this is much more balanced than the Lords test. Good for Giles. What better way to answer his critics than with Pontings wicket? |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: Shakey Date: 05 Aug 05 - 07:45 AM 118-3 at lunch, I'll settle for that but the ozzies don't look settled. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: The Shambles Date: 05 Aug 05 - 07:44 AM I will certainly make the advanced buying of tickets for test matches on Sunday - a bit unadvisable........ I looked first thing if the wickets would be falling quickly - but only three have fallen by lunch. The cricket has not been quite as exciting or the scoring not so fast as yesterday but it has been just as interesting. The England captain has had a good day as a fielder - including a fine direct-hit and run-out. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: ad1943 Date: 04 Aug 05 - 09:59 PM At 5 runs per over..could this mean the death of one day cricket? Allen from Oz |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: GUEST,Jon Date: 04 Aug 05 - 06:56 PM I had thought we may have been in for a bigger total but 407 isn't bad. Tommorrow morning should be interesting. If we do get a couple of early breakthroughs, I might even start getting optimistic. Trouble wth the aussies though is that if one department falls short, a couple from the other often seem to make up for it... |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: John O'L Date: 04 Aug 05 - 06:32 PM I didn't see much of it, but it seems like it was a good first day's play. At the moment it seems that we have a match on our hands. Vaughn & Bell could have done a bit more, and I can't believe Jones is still in the team, but still, a score to defend. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: GUEST,Hrothgar at work Date: 04 Aug 05 - 04:49 PM These Poms are lazy bastards - hitting all those boundaries instead of running! |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: The Shambles Date: 04 Aug 05 - 02:00 PM Perhaps this will be seen as wasted opportunity to pile on a really big score? Mind you to do it at over 5 runs per over was good but i suspect the Australians will be able to match this.... We will see tomorrow. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: Alan Day Date: 04 Aug 05 - 01:39 PM Well a good start by England, over 400 and hit with aggresion. Australia were saved by the rain but we will know in the morning. I feel that the first test result was a relief to the Australians,I think they know they are against a better side than they have played against in years.I think the selectors have shown faith in a young team who would have learnt a lot from the first test.If England do win the next test then what an exciting series this will be. Great stuff. Al |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: The Shambles Date: 04 Aug 05 - 09:09 AM I have this feeling of duja vu - also. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: rhyzla Date: 04 Aug 05 - 08:59 AM Ok, I've got a ticket for sunday - what are the odds of me seeing any play?? |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: The Shambles Date: 04 Aug 05 - 08:43 AM 170-3 Pietersen at the crease. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: Shakey Date: 04 Aug 05 - 07:34 AM 132-1 at lunch 18 for Trescothic off the last Bret Lee over. Early days but a good start. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: Shakey Date: 04 Aug 05 - 07:28 AM 112-1 How does Warne do that. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: The Shambles Date: 04 Aug 05 - 06:43 AM He will never make a rugby player............. The choice to field - seems a bad one. 60 for no loss - seems to suggest it was? |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: Hrothgar Date: 04 Aug 05 - 05:51 AM Replaced him with a Queenslander. You're still in trouble. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: John O'L Date: 04 Aug 05 - 05:26 AM McGrath not playing? Well that makes it interesting. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: Shakey Date: 04 Aug 05 - 05:09 AM I'm between contracts (start 1/9) so with the days running into one another I sort of lost track of time and got ahead of myself and I thought it would be easier to have a thread for each game. Just read England unchanged, shame I wanted Collingwood in, still McGrath is NOT playing. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: John O'L Date: 04 Aug 05 - 04:38 AM Shakey, you're quick. I was going to revive the other thread, but I didn't want to do it too early. Glad to see you have no such qualms. If England can hold their catches the're in with a chance. Should be a good game. Looking forward to it. Paul - All Blacks v. Springboks this weekend. Looking forward to that too. All Blacks by 20. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: muppett Date: 04 Aug 05 - 04:22 AM Yep Paul I second that |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: Paul Burke Date: 04 Aug 05 - 04:18 AM I reckon that whoever gets their game together at the lineout will get more penalty corners, but will only convert them to handovers if they are on pole position in the peloton. Watch out for the bunker behind the 17th. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: muppett Date: 03 Aug 05 - 11:43 AM I reckon who ever bats first will win, Edgbaston has a reputation of high scoring test matches, so lets hope England get in First. Watched Michael Vaghan on Sunday seemed to be back to form, but will he be fit for the game, anyone the latest about him. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: ad1943 Date: 02 Aug 05 - 09:18 PM Do you chaps remember when Tests would run for 5 days and even perhaps be a draw? Ah! Halcyon days indeed Allen from Oz |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: GUEST,Shakey Date: 02 Aug 05 - 04:29 PM Just discovered that it's er Tuesday today, well I've got a lot on. Anyway this thread is now very early. |
Subject: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: GUEST,Shakey Date: 02 Aug 05 - 02:22 PM Couldn't wait 'til tomorrow, anyway it gives people chance to predict and make a fool of themselves. Shakey PS I hope the thread title is ok, does it need UK in front of it? ;-) England but close (win if Collingwood plays) |
