A question there though shambles is did I realy have the faith? The truth is to some degree it was "fighting talk" over here and didn't actualy equate to my expected outcome wich was like yours. The other side of that "faith coin" though is that I did believe the capabilty was there within the team.

As for the 280 target, I think on the face of that game, a higher target could have been achievable and certainly looked that way until Flitoff got those 2. There was a point where say 280-3 would not have suprised me... but isn't that just cricket with all it's twists and turns?

Perhaps Jon should have credit for his prediction. For he did have faith and predict an England victory at a time when others (me for one) were a lot less sure and he was only 20 or so runs short of predicting the final total.

Interesting that a side has still to make more than 280 to win. As this run chase was started on the 3rd and and not the 5th - it is a bit surprising.

Well done, Poms. I saw the last finish like that one twenty-odd years ago when Allan Border and Jeff Thomson nearly pulled off an equally unlikely victory at the MCG, and lost by three (again when the fast bowler was caught). There were 20,000 people at the MCG for a day that could have lasted just one ball and went for over an hour.

Thommo's other claim to fame is that he made damn sure Kasper didn't go back to rugby (but I tried!).

Now, who is going to explain this to the hotshot marketing men who decided we needed that Twenty 20 crap?

The most exciting Test Match Ever!
What a tail end fight back and what excitement.
We did however make it difficult for ourselves with a bad second innings batting performance and the result was that we were lucky to win.The fighting spirit of this team pulled us through.This will be a big moral boost to the lads and it would not suprise me now if we pulled of an Ashes win.
Warne and Flintoff were the stars and it was a shame that they both did not get man of the match awards.
A great win over a great team.

And I have (in the earlier thread) made the point that many English people do indeed support the sporting endeavours of the Scotch and Welsh.


I think that had Australia won - Warnes contribution to that victory would have made him man of the match. As England won - it was Flintoff's individual contribution to that victory that deserves to makes him the man of the match. Without his 73 and those sixes - there would have been no match.

Nice to see him console Bret Lee at the end. That probably sealed it

I get annoyed by the racing too but I can remember at least one occasion where they did manage to delay going over because of the state of the game. If they have to do it, wish they did it the other way round and make those with the satelite equipment (for Film 4?) watch the horse racing. I gather the cricket goes elsewhere next year which I think, even alowing for horse racing and ads, is a bit of a shame as I have liked thier coverage.

Rain at Old Trafford eh? My bet with myself for the series was 3-1 to Australia with 1 draw. Perhaps that one will be the draw then...

Seeing their decisions subject to slo-mo and all the other gadgets and gizmos - the surprising thing is not that that they may sometimes get it wrong (in the spit seconds they have) but how often they are shown to be right.

There are of course some good and not so good decisions but they do tend to cancel each other out.

I think I'd leave the team as it is. The minimum they will have achieved is to give the aussies a big scare and as you note they all seem to be pulling together as a team in the field. Perhaps with a bit more confidence the bating will improve.

I think this one has offered us the best chance with McGrath out of action and possibly Ponting's strange (to me) decision on winning the toss but I do think we should be able to make a game of all these tests.

What a great, well balanced test this has been and it could still go either way. Just shows what a difference having McGrath in the team makes.

Perhaps in order to keep the series interesting England should be allowed at the start of each match to pick a member of the Australian squad who would be ineligible to play.

That brave prediction has been noted.

Whatever the outcome tomorrow - it is clear that the rest of the series will be tightly contested. And if only England can get someone other than Flintoff, Pietersen and to a lesser extent Trescothick and Strauss - to stay at the crease and get some runs - England should even win.

Simon Jones at least stayed around long enough with Flintoff and it was only this parnership that gave Australia any sort of target to chase. It would only be honest to say that the rest have not really justified their selection as batsmen. With just a few more second innings runs - this game would have been over.

Despite this - there does seem to be a fighting team spirit and everyone seems to know what to do in the field - so perhaps the team should be left as it is? Not that there appears to be too many altenatives....

Any predictions for the outcome? I think my money must now be on a tie. I suspect the bookies would now be making England favourites.

It is probably more likely that they will get two wickets than Australia get their hundred or so runs - but who can tell with this contest?

England will struggle to make about 150 and fail to bowl Australia out.

It looks as if Flintoff (the best England bowler) will not be able to bowl and as there will be no time pressure - the Australians will be able to make the required runs very easily.

But I hope that I am proved completely wrong........

You are watching history with Warne. I have been watching Tests since the early 1950s and have never seen a bowler as good. I have seen Tyson, Statham, Roberts , Lillee, Thomson, Griffith, Garner, Snow, Lock, Benaud, Lindwall, Miller, Hall and countless others who were superb but this bloke is amazing. A good test this one

Agreed Alan, Warne is an outstanding bowler. I remember seeing him when he first played a test over here and was amazed and I was still amazed watching Strauss fall today. Mind you, having seen him spin the ball so often, I was probably even more amazed at his bouncer at Pieterson in the first test.

Although I am hoping England win this one and two more,I cannot but marvel at Shane Warne`s bowling.His two dismisals of Strauss were breath taking,but overall his bowling is a pleasure to watch.He will be sadly missed when he quits test cricket and it is rumoured that this is his last tour,but what a craftsman.
This Ashes clash is so far living up to and surpassing all expectations.Out lads will fight to the finish win or lose.
What a combination of Peterson and Flintoff, at last they both clicked together and with a bit of experience they will be feared by teams Worldwide.I must applaud the selectors for taking a chance on Peterson they would have come in for a lot of stick if he had let them down.
Can we get another 250?

Warne's batting was 'iffy' but he is after-all - in the team for his bowling. Which on the evidence of the delivery that got Strauss's wicket - is worrying as the pitch is only going to favour him more.

The only hope is if the match position does not allow Ponting to set the sort of close attacking fields that helped make Warne's bowling so effective at Lords.

What do the aussie's think of Warne's batting today? I'd thought he might at least have tried to stick around a while and I know he can bat well but he seemed to me to be almost intent on commiting suicide.

I will certainly make the advanced buying of tickets for test matches on Sunday - a bit unadvisable........

I looked first thing if the wickets would be falling quickly - but only three have fallen by lunch. The cricket has not been quite as exciting or the scoring not so fast as yesterday but it has been just as interesting.

The England captain has had a good day as a fielder - including a fine direct-hit and run-out.

I had thought we may have been in for a bigger total but 407 isn't bad. Tommorrow morning should be interesting. If we do get a couple of early breakthroughs, I might even start getting optimistic.

Trouble wth the aussies though is that if one department falls short, a couple from the other often seem to make up for it...

Well a good start by England,over 400 and hit with aggresion.
Australia were saved by the rain but we will know in the morning.
I feel that the first test result was a relief to the Australians,I think they know they are against a better side than they have played against in years.I think the selectors have shown faith in a young team who would have learnt a lot from the first test.If England do win the next test then what an exciting series this will be.
