Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: GUEST,Jon Date: 09 Aug 05 - 01:46 PM A question there though shambles is did I realy have the faith? The truth is to some degree it was "fighting talk" over here and didn't actualy equate to my expected outcome wich was like yours. The other side of that "faith coin" though is that I did believe the capabilty was there within the team. As for the 280 target, I think on the face of that game, a higher target could have been achievable and certainly looked that way until Flitoff got those 2. There was a point where say 280-3 would not have suprised me... but isn't that just cricket with all it's twists and turns? |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: The Shambles Date: 09 Aug 05 - 01:18 PM Perhaps Jon should have credit for his prediction. For he did have faith and predict an England victory at a time when others (me for one) were a lot less sure and he was only 20 or so runs short of predicting the final total. Interesting that a side has still to make more than 280 to win. As this run chase was started on the 3rd and and not the 5th - it is a bit surprising. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: Hrothgar Date: 09 Aug 05 - 07:08 AM Well done, Poms. I saw the last finish like that one twenty-odd years ago when Allan Border and Jeff Thomson nearly pulled off an equally unlikely victory at the MCG, and lost by three (again when the fast bowler was caught). There were 20,000 people at the MCG for a day that could have lasted just one ball and went for over an hour. Thommo's other claim to fame is that he made damn sure Kasper didn't go back to rugby (but I tried!). Now, who is going to explain this to the hotshot marketing men who decided we needed that Twenty 20 crap? |

Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: GUEST,Jon Date: 08 Aug 05 - 04:21 PM Should have added, I doubt we will see him do that again. He's done his last international match and retires from all cricket at the end of the season. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: Rasener Date: 08 Aug 05 - 03:28 PM Thanks for the help there Jon :-) I knew it was to do with sheep and big men LOL |

Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: Rasener Date: 08 Aug 05 - 02:56 PM Yes its to do with that umpire who when the score gets to 111, he jumps on his feet. Superstinion thing. Whats his name damn on the tip of my tongue. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: The Shambles Date: 08 Aug 05 - 02:46 PM Perhaps the reference to putting ones feet back on the floor can be explained? If there IS an explanation........ |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: Long Firm Freddie Date: 08 Aug 05 - 02:00 PM It's OK, you can put both feet on the floor now. (Last post was no 111) LFF |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: Tam the man Date: 08 Aug 05 - 09:38 AM Look Tam the Scotchman, I'm sorry if I have upset you. Lets agree to disagree eh! let bygones by bygones. Forgive and forget. Tam. Aye right enough we shouldn't arguing about this calling Scots, scotch afterall it's just a word, and as you say the Shambles what has this to do with Cricket nothing |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: Tam the man Date: 08 Aug 05 - 09:33 AM Oh grow up, GET A LIFE Tam the scotchman, Anyway, are we not grown ups, well I know I am. Are you. Tam the Scotchman I just made a point, you don't have to agree with it. I'm sorry about you being so childlike |

Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: Rasener Date: 08 Aug 05 - 06:55 AM Rhyzla Were Rhyzome there entertaining the crowd!!! Must take your opportunities LOL I bet your blood pressure went up a bit :-) I know mine did, and the missus saying "come on, we want to go out - bloody cricket" LOL Great win. Its not about how many you win by, but have you got the guts to take the pressure. England proved that they are up with the tops. Its great to see English bowlers giving the batsman a lot of bruises. Been a long time since we saw England dishing it out. That will make the Aussies think a bit. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: Shakey Date: 07 Aug 05 - 07:12 PM I nearly had a coronary, took me all day to calm down. Nice touch from Flintoff, the first person he went to was Lee, not to gloat but to congratulate him for nearly pulling it off. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: John O'L Date: 07 Aug 05 - 06:57 PM In the after-match interview Flintoff was asked if he thought England could win the ashes. "We've GOT to," he said. I like that. We've got a battle ahead. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: Alan Day Date: 07 Aug 05 - 06:39 PM The most exciting Test Match Ever! What a tail end fight back and what excitement. We did however make it difficult for ourselves with a bad second innings batting performance and the result was that we were lucky to win.The fighting spirit of this team pulled us through. This will be a big moral boost to the lads and it would not suprise me now if we pulled of an Ashes win. Warne and Flintoff were the stars and it was a shame that they both did not get man of the match awards. A great win over a great team. Al |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: rhyzla Date: 07 Aug 05 - 03:19 PM Well, I can proudly say - "I was there" - left the ground at 12.15pm - left the pub at 5.15pm -- sheeshh! Bloody close or wot? |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: The Shambles Date: 07 Aug 05 - 02:44 PM May I remind you Shambles the word Scotch is whisky, the people from Scotland are called SCOTS You may indeed remind me but perhaps I can remind you that this is a thread about cricket and England even had a Scotch captain once. As a resident in Scotland for twelve years I do not need reminding that (some) folk in Scotland do not like to be referred to as Scotch.*Smiles* And I have (in the earlier thread) made the point that many English people do indeed support the sporting endeavours of the Scotch and Welsh. I think that had Australia won - Warnes contribution to that victory would have made him man of the match. As England won - it was Flintoff's individual contribution to that victory that deserves to makes him the man of the match. Without his 73 and those sixes - there would have been no match. Nice to see him console Bret Lee at the end. That probably sealed it |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: GUEST,Jon Date: 07 Aug 05 - 02:25 PM Well as Flintoff got it, I'll go for him. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: Skipper Jack Date: 07 Aug 05 - 02:14 PM Well who you do you, fellow mudcatters, think should be the man of the match? Both Warne and Flintoff are worthy contenders. But I shall go with Flintoof on the account of his batting as well. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: RobbieWilson Date: 07 Aug 05 - 01:49 PM The ball hit the glove but the hand was not on the bat. Not out would have been the correct decision |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: GUEST,Jon Date: 07 Aug 05 - 01:25 PM I get annoyed by the racing too but I can remember at least one occasion where they did manage to delay going over because of the state of the game. If they have to do it, wish they did it the other way round and make those with the satelite equipment (for Film 4?) watch the horse racing. I gather the cricket goes elsewhere next year which I think, even alowing for horse racing and ads, is a bit of a shame as I have liked thier coverage. Rain at Old Trafford eh? My bet with myself for the series was 3-1 to Australia with 1 draw. Perhaps that one will be the draw then... |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: Flash Company Date: 07 Aug 05 - 10:49 AM Adverts are bad enough, but Channel 4 Racing yesterday? Come on!!! I had to be out this morning, and just got back in time to see the final wicket. I'm not sure my heart would have stood the strain of watching it all. Roll on Old Trafford.(Rain forecast for the Manchester area for Thursday!) FC |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: GUEST,Tam the Scotchman Date: 07 Aug 05 - 09:52 AM Scotch is an adjective and can be applied to anything. It just so happens that some tight arsed Scotch Presbyterians don't like to be compared to whisky. Read your Burns Tam the man and you'll find there are Scotch lawyers as well as Scotchmen ... lighten up. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: Tam the man Date: 07 Aug 05 - 09:36 AM May I remind you Shambles the word Scotch is whisky, the people from Scotland are called SCOTS |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: The Shambles Date: 07 Aug 05 - 09:35 AM Perhaps a word for the umpires (it is a good job they are not Scotch)? Seeing their decisions subject to slo-mo and all the other gadgets and gizmos - the surprising thing is not that that they may sometimes get it wrong (in the spit seconds they have) but how often they are shown to be right. There are of course some good and not so good decisions but they do tend to cancel each other out. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Outboasting From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 07 Aug 05 - 09:33 AM Unless there has been a rule change, a hit on the glove (if the hand is one the bat handle) is out. |

Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: The Shambles Date: 07 Aug 05 - 07:24 AM 2 run victory I stand corrected. But I would have settled for even one run - as long as England won. Not very good at this prediction lark are we? |
Subject: RE: BS: Ashes 05 Edgbaston From: John O'L Date: 07 Aug 05 - 07:19 AM Jones managed to glove one. He would have been a dead man if he'd let that one go through. The series is alive. Not a convincing win by anyone's standards but it's one all and that's good. |
