Only 2 weeks ago we had baby bunnies running in tight little circles, now they are sprinting in straight lines. We have had a glimpse of record setting heat and some tropical downpours that soaked me in just 3 seconds. Its the time of year to take the plunge.

You're 8 years old and its the first beach day of the summer. It will be another 8 years before you feel such a powerful anticipation. You can smell the fishiness of the ocean and hear distant surf but there are bushes in the steep dunes that block your view. Your footing in flip flops is perilous in your now short uphill journey to the beach.
Finally the volume of the ocean swells and the sunshine is hot - and so are your feet as you lose your flip flops momentarily. The vista of waves and the deep crashing whomp of waves onshore fills you with excitment as you run awkwardly slow in the sand. Only now do you pay attention to the other people, umbrellas and blankets looking for your spot in the sun.

We're having an unprecedented heatwave. It's 34C here today (93 Fahrenheit) and while I love the heat, I feel so sorry for those having to work. Most places here have no air-conditioning. Our poor postman arrived just now and he was bright red and pouring with sweat. We gave him a couple of icy cold cans of Diet Coke.
The weather forecast said in London it will be 37C today (98 Fahrenheit) I can't imagine what that must be like, in the pollution and noise etc.
I've filled up both bird baths to the brim, and put out bowls of water for any small animals that need a drink.
Everything seems weird just now - this blooming virus, stupendous heat, lockdown, people in masks... most disorientating!

Thanks for the vivid story about the frogs, Donuel. I've heard frogs in chorus, but never as loud as that.

I have lived in my house since 1977, and for the first time we have hummingbirds living here. We planted native honeysuckle several years ago, and finally we see them feeding there. They seem magical.

Unlike dragon flies the smaller damsel flies here can really fly like hummingbirds as in combining backwards flight in any direction.
Fossil ancestors of the dragon fly were over a foot long.
I once did a painting of a dragonfly acting like a taxi for other insects.

My neighbors like the mazes I mow into the large yard so this summer I'm doing 2.

The dragonflies are back,
hovering like the hummingbirds
(which I recall from a different region --
how I miss those hummingbirds).

My son and I went for a late night swim last night. The water was warm and the air as humid as a hot shower. But the noise was deafning. An unknown number of ffrogs or toads and their babies were in full voice chorus and could have been yelling at 70 decibels. We had trouble trying to talk to each other but the moment we got out of the pool they all went dead silent. The transition was instantly abrupt as only the sound of our splish splish foot steps could be heard. When the door closed one probably said 'Everyone back in the pool'.

How is everybody holding up?

Different with a pandemic going on,
or are there some things that remain the same?

I'm in Massachusetts's southern Berkshire county
where this is normally a boost to the economy
from summer tourism.

And since the relaxation of what were fairly strict protocols,
there are tourists, formations of small families with young children,
strolling on the sidewalks wearing sunhats and such.

Other tourists as well, however the others
continue to practice the social distancing conventions.
I imagine that the parents of little children
were desperate to get out of the house for a change!

I just saw a pair of shorts,
with a senior citizen inside of them,

of the kind that used to be made into
Hawaiian shirts.

The weather hits a point in North Texas when every day it's up to the high-90s, low 100s and down to about 80 overnight. You have to plan for those "cooler" morning hours for work in the yard that takes more than a few minutes, though I tend to go out through the day, but spend only a few minutes at a time on small chores. The lawn gets mowed less often when the grass is dormant in the heat, but we're not there yet.

The ceilings have been restored but the insulation hasn't been put back in the attic over those two rooms yet. That's an early morning task also.

For the first time since 1998, the heat wave is during my beach week, rather than before or after. It is a glorious thing.

Not that it coincided in 98, but that was when we started having a beach week.

… and while the mass media keeps a body count
of heat-wave fatalities,

a fishing cruise off of Cape Cod had an amateur video of
people reeling in a bass on a fishing line at the stern,

and a great white shark
showed up and
bit the bass in half.
And did a flip, smacking the stern
and scaring the heck out of the passengers.

Off of the southern New England coast,
the fish have a number of reasons to jump.

One of those reasons is hungry humpback whales.

Check out this breaching whale video.

Gives new meaning to the phrase 'flying fish'!

It takes time for the hydrangeas to bloom,
by the time they do so,
many other things have bloomed and gone to seed.

But now the hydrangea blossoms have their time.

I'm thin, so I manage a comfortable room by opening & closing windows and turning fans on & off.

While I lived in rural Virginia I wrote this imitation:

When home the truck comes high with hay
And divers splash and sunlight dapples
And loud black clouds relieve the day
And chickens peck at sour apples
And fans drown out the drowsy word,
Then nightly sings the mockingbird
In every mode at dusk and dawn
While sweaty Gabriel mows the lawn.

We have window air conditioners for the two computer geeks - me and my stepson. The electric bill isn't too high for 2 rooms. My wife works in the garden until is gets too hot. Then she goes uphill and hikes in the Sierra. Guess who's the healthy one in our family.

They are indeed , keberoxu, and a joy to watch these little gems of summer. I especially like the blue ones. At a nearby pond, I also see a green frog on a carpet of lily pads, and hear the hilariously boisterous bellow of the bullfrogs. Graceful white egrets swoop to shore at dusk and the evening is lit by sparkling stars of fireflies. Ah......summer.

I have a structural project going at my house right now - the roof is in place, but two ceilings needed removal and replacement due to a shifting foundation. So - not lazy, but definitely crazy until the contractor arrives to put in the new drywall.

My electric bill will probably be through the roof this month, because I have one of the two house AC units running to keep part of the house tolerable.

(But I do feel sorry for the Bradford lads toiling away on that burned house over the road. I'll take them some more ice-cold cans of Coke tomorrow. Hot weather's no fun if you're toiling away trying to earn a living.)

Oh no keberoxu, not Crimbo already???!! I adore Christmas, but for goodness sake, they should let us squeeze the juice out of summer first! It's very hot and sunny here, and to think about Christmas just now seems really wrong.
We invited all our neighbours over to help themselves to Bramley cooking apples from our enormous tree. They positively rain down on your head at this time of year, and the lawn was covered in them. Also rhubarb. An hour or two later, one of our friends came back with a gorgeous apple and rhubarb crumble they'd made for us. We had it with the aforementioned Cornish ice cream. It was delicious. Total bliss.

Oooh Joanne, what a gorgeous moment! I've never even heard of a frozen custard in a cone, but - I WANT ONE NOW!!! (Yes, I'm shouting!)

I treated myself to not one but two punnets of obscenely delicious Norfolk cherries. They were selling them at only £1, half Tesco's price, in Roys of Wroxham (pronounced Rarksm). They're the size of golf balls, black, sweet and flavoursome. AND a large Cromer crab, ready-dressed. I ate the lot for lunch. Greedy pig aren't I?

For tea I had a kipper and finished with some Kelly's Cornish dairy ice-cream. (It has real cream in it.) And the cats licked the bowl.
My husband's in Africa at the moment, so I could slurp and gorge shamelessly.

Winter has its own delights (did I ever mention I'm a Crumpet-Dripping-With-Butter addict?) but summer is The Best.

Sometimes you get the transient moments of perfect of a summer's night.

Wednesday evening, I had just finished a satisfying and entertaining night of open mic, where I did NOT suck, and others were stellar. Around the corner on my way home was an ice cream and custard stand, all decked out in neon and sparkly lights. The sunset had reached that Maxfield Parish state of bottom-lit pink clouds in a deep turquoise sky, behind the stand. I had been craving a frozen custard for a hot, dry week. Waiting in line, admiring the sky, watching folks drive up, join the line while chatting with friends and neighbors who'd been served and relishing their choices, was such a crystallization of the best of summer.

The cone was a large waffle cone, well filled, a bargain at $2.50. I wish you all such simple, but vastly rich moments of summer.

Joanne in hot muggy Cleveland (enough rain to pump up the humidity, but not enough to give relief to the shriveling trees)

The only images of mine that appear anymore are stolen copies.
Do not go back any further, the lack of spelling and grammar support rendered only my drawings comprehensible, and some of those were beyond comprehension.

Still if you can't share beauty in prose do it in poetry. If you can't do poetry try pictures and music. Music is best.
