Subject: BS: Ducks Fly South (and a bit west)
From: Mrs.Duck
Date: 09 Aug 05 - 12:32 PM

Along with a considerable number of other UK catters the Duck family are coming to the Getaway in October. After that we are heading North to Canada through Buffalo and Niagra round the lake to Toronto and then maybe continue round and back south to New York to fly home on 30th October. We would love to meet up with any Mudcatters en route. We are seriously considering moving to canada so need to find out what we think of it. I'd especially like to visit Whitby given our connections with the same named town here. We haven't decided whether to hire a car and use motels or hire a campervan (RV) so any local insight into that would also be very useful.
I'm so excited!!

Mrs Duck - I cannot speak for WYSIWYG - but she is conveniently located about halfway to the Canadian border from Getaway.

It's a loverly time of year to tour up through the Northern tier of PA and the southern tier of NY - then up through the finger lakes and around Lake Ontario to Toronto - should be nearly peak "leaf-peeper" season - certain to be so *somewhere* along that route.

Posilutely-- a special privilege for us, as we cannot get away ourselves. Also, if people know you are coming to roost, no doubt others will migrate as well. Do the Ducks care to have the Dorm to themselves or shall we mix you all up a bit? (There are a couple of other rooms in the main house as well.)

Yes we are definitely coming. We plan to travel up to Buffalo on Wednesday so stopping Monday and Tuesday night there would be great. We aim to end our journey at Mystic Seaport (Fri/Sat 28th/29th) if there are any Mudcatters in that area it would be great to meet up.

I was serious about the pond BTW-- we're members at an indoor pool, so we can enjoy hot tubbing while ducklings splash if you like, and if you bring suits.

Geoff the Duck:

WYSIWYG lives in Pennsylvania, which is home to Troegs' Pale Ale, one of the best beers in the world, IMHO. It's sold in Harrisburg and Gettysburg, though, so I don't know if it's available where WYSIWYG and Hardiman live. In my experience, the U.S. is crawling with good breweries - it's just that they're small and don't get the distribution of Coors, etc.

Check out Whitby, by all means, but you may not find much to remind you of Whitby, England. Charmion and I hope to be at the Getaway and we would be glad to talk to you about your idea of moving to Canada. Of course, we only know a small part of it!

CET, if you and Charmion are here when the Ducks are, you can tell them ALL about Canada.

I do know there is a porter available here, but I can't recall the brand. (Blame Alaska Mike for getting me hooked on it!)

If you drive from the Getaway to WYSIWYG's, you will necessarily pass through Harrisburg, where the above mentioned Troeg's Pale Ale is available.

I have friends who have spoken highly of American micro-breweries and their products, but they have also pointed out that because of the near momopoly of a couple of gigantic companies, that they can be difficult to find. Hence my asking now, so that you know that we are interested in the good stuff, and would wish to sample some of it.
I would also be intested in knowing about other brews along our route when we have got a more concrete itinerary.
Quack!
Geoff.

There were two irish men out hunting ducks. For five days they sat by the lake side and saw hundreds of ducks fly over - but they got not a one. On the sixth day one turns to the other and says 'Michael, we've been sitting here for 5 days, seen thousands of ducks fly by but we've got not a one. What is wrong?'. Michael says 'I don't know, John. Do you think we're throwing the dogs high enough?'

When ducks fly south, you might have noticed that they always fly in a V formation.

If you observe carefully, you will see that one arm of the V is always longer than the other arm of the V.

Do you know why this is?

It is because the longer arm of the V usually has more ducks in it.

Ya know, the myth that good American beer is hard to find is hard to deal with. Sure, we have Budweiser and Coors and Millers, but there is also Sam Adams, Alaska Amber, Polygamy Porter, Weiderman's, Sierra, Dead Guy, Moose Drool, Fat Tire (not exported because the English spell "tire" funny), Pete's, Troutslayer, and a LOT of others, some larger producers than others. And that's just the stuff made here -- and it includes IPA types, stouts, and ales as well as lagers.

Canada, on the other hand, only has Molson, Moosehead, and Labatts. Right, eh?

Over here we used to have the Oozalum Bird which flew anticlockwise until it disappeared up its own fundament.
It was often found in company with the Mugwump Bird which would sit on a fence with its mug on one side and its wump on the other...
Quack!!

Don't know what it is like where you folks live, but here in Quebec you can go to the local corner store and pick up a six pack of beer , wine or whatever up to 11 at night. In some stores maybe later. No need for bootleggers.
O. K. Rapaire, I'll bite... You know very well we have great beer here in Canada. In fact, we even have that training beer so as to please our American friends(Just kidding of course.). We have Porter, Stout, and some great Micro Brewery stuff that is really pleasing. All to say that when you folks visit, a cold one will be available.

It appears we will have a large pop-up camper on the premises for any hardy souls not sufficiently chilled at Ramblewood, or for those on the way TO the Getaway who want to pre-chill. hMMMMM..... Maybe that will also be a good place to hide.... (and chill) the.... BEER?

Campfire time!

Oh, and YES! My maw in law is coming to visit a few days after you-all leave-- LOL-- I'm sure you'll help me get the place in proper order for the dear!

We've just gotten the word on the financing for the pop-up-- it's a go, and the older, smaller one is still here too. That means foam-mattress sleeping space (for hardy lovers of cold nights) for 3 more couples and several singles, including one (maybe two) kingsize beds. Please help spread the word!

Getaway should be incredible this year. I'm looking forward to it as well - but first have to negotiate my way through a family wedding - guests start arriving for that in 8 days - the wedding is the 10th. Some guests may still be around when I take off the evening of the 13th for Getaway....Thank goodness it is a small wedding!!!!!

Lo! the great hunter has gone forth in glory and bravely slain the Mighty Groceries for the pre- and post-Getaway hospitality stop at our place. (LilyFestre is coming over tomorrow to help me cook. The crockpots, ovens, and toaster oven will be busy!)

I know that one person is bringing breakfast stuff, and I have more of same so that is covered; I have entree's covered and some snackification.

The refrigerator cries out for "Produce! We shall need fresh produce! And beer!"

It sort of takes on its own momentum-- you'll see! :~)

Jane, I have the Ducklings slated to join you and Geoff up in the Dorm. A delicate question-- do they share bedspace ever? There's also a wonderful foam and duvet bedroll up there-- not sure yet how many are coming-- always a bit of sorting out to do at bedtime.... will they tend to hang out with the music or do they dash off on their own-- what kinds of diversions might they appreciate having available in case the adults are just too, too bohring?

~S~

Twins almost always share bedspace and Maddie is fine with it too so no problem there. They tend to be fairly good at amusing themselves and we have books etc with us. They also enjoy the music so its pretty much see how the mood takes them and as long as they are not causing problems...They are folk kids so know what happens and adapt quickly.

I certainly do not mean to suggest they may cause problems! (It's usually well-meaning adults making kids nuts with overly-solicitous "help".) We have enjoyed children of all ages and temperaments being at past MudGathers here...

Let's have Maddie in one bed and the twins in another-- happily, that leaves a bed for Mmario (too cold for the camper) and the bedroll if needed for someone else. The other rooms will flex around others' plans then, quite nicely. This will help me place folks coming PRE-Getaway, too, without a lot of unnecessasry bed-changing in between.

Lovely how it all works itself out! Thanks, Jane!

Just got Leadfingers on the road after a pre-pre-G'way stop. What a lovely time. LilyFestre worked like crazy yesterday helping me roast and pack up about 25 pounds of various meats for the freezer, to draw from as need arises for entrees and sandwiches. (Well, we did consume the ham already!) She was still here when Leadfingers arrived, and later her husband came by for a late supper and to pick her up. In between there was mighty craic.

Hardi'd had a meeting last night with the Bish that kept him out till late, but then he and Leadfingers had a nice little song-swap and we got to see all the fabulous instruments he'd brought-- including a guitar lent by SINSULL that Hardi enjoyed using to teach him "Built for Comfort." (I have pix of Hardi corrupting Sins' guitar!)

Dear Leadfingers was a wonderfully self-sufficient guest, and he brought up something I might as well address here. He wanted us to accept a budgetary contribution; I refused-- for us this is a lot like parish events, where the host parish would supply the entree and other specified items, and others bring the missing items. (I got a VERY good price at the grocers and bought only what was well-priced-- I enjoyed the day spent cooking with LilyFestre.) So of course I said "No, thank you very much," because it really is our privilege to have folks come here when we can't go "there," and what actually motivates us more than anything else is timely RSVP's. So if anyone is thinking along those lines, "Nuh-uh!" A contribution to Mudcat, however, is always appreciated.

Before leaving, Leadfingers took a few pix to supplement the ones I'd taken the night before; we'll make sure to take some more as the pre/post-G'way visits continue. When LF returns to the UK and can email his to me, I'll send Pene Azul a whole set for the Events section as I did last year with Charmion's wonderful photos. I hope she brings her camera again.... I have another little digital camera to pass around, in addition to my newer camera; I know LilyFestre has one too. So there may be a lot of pix this year.

My main prep task remaining is to cover the living room tables with decorative plastic (beats dusting!). I'll be able to relax and not worry about beer rings getting on them! :~)

I've indicated this thread for other folks who are thinking of coming, for the updates-- hope the Ducks don't mind a temporary thread hijack!

~Susan

beardedbruce, the line about keeping someone's hand for a souvenir makes me remember a line from a song someone sang at the dining hall jam the last night about 'she picked up her lover's dying head'. Loved it- hope I got it on tape!

Ducks AND MADDY have landed, bringing some good English beer. Maddy is getting aquainted with the cats, the twins have their faces stuck in some picture books. Bill, the cat that ate Toledo, is busy assimilating the new arrivals.

Mrs.Duck.here at Charmion and CETs. Had a great evening with music and song and of course beer and bourbon! Going to look at Parliament Hill in the rain later - maybe I'll catch me a Mounty!! Travelling South tomorrow to visit with Beer for a couple of nights and then down to Guys to play in the leaves. Life just keeps getting better!

Unfortunately dawn in Ottawa brought the discovery that our rental car had been broken into and pillaged. Some of our laundry has been recovered but we now have no rear quarter light. The rental company say we cannot have it repaired but must return the vehicle to the nearest office for a replacement - that being JFK airport!!! We are hoping to have temporary repairs done and carry on as planned but it is a real pain in the a***. We will keep folk informed if you are expecting us as there may be delays but hopefully not.
Jane and Geoff still at CETs.

Most unfortunate and sad to hear that this occured in Ottawa which is generally regarded as being safer than many other cities in this regard.

Hope the rest of your visit proceeds more enjoyably.

Chose to ignore rental company and have repairs done here in Ottawa. How can I drive 1000 miles with kids and no rear window to get a new car!! Will delay our journey south cutting short our visit with Beer but the alternative was not a possibility. Hopefully the rest of the trip will be less eventful!

Thanks to Artoush the Armenian autobody guy (Art's Collision Services [no kidding], corner Heron Road and Kaladar Avenue, Ottawa), the Ducks are winging down the 417 to Ormestown and Beer. Nobody slept very soundly last night -- too much tension yesterday -- but despite the continuing rain today's omens look good.

The Ottawa police were their usual sweet, efficient selves. Constable Jason Savoury was responding to a complaint about grafitti when he found two of the four stolen Duck suitcases in the schoolyard where the thieves had dumped them. He delivered them to our front door on his way back to the station at the end of his patrol shift. Geoff and the kids recovered a few more items during two sweeps of the neighbourhood; Mollie is very proud of having found her sock. Best of all, nothing of significance was lost -- except, of course, a good night's sleep and a day in Ormestown with Beer and family.

What were the good things that happened? Let's see: Edmund leading the flock down Parliament Hill with a twin by each hand, birdlike voices reaching us on the damp breeze. Maddy in the Peace Tower: "Is there a reason why that clock looks so much like Big Ben?" Chocolate ice cream at three meals. Fuller's London Pride (voted Britain's best ale) at The Royal Oak, and several rounds of "Who Am I? 20 Questions". Try to imagine Maddy as Hitler ... Rowan as David Beckham is a little more likely.

By the way: You will know your day has taken a sharp left turn if you ever find yourself calling the police dressed only in a towel and a light coating of bathwater.

Cet I concure . We gave them the best matrasses we had for the floor in the music room and not one complaint ! Molly and Rowen slepped near their feet ( At least at the begining of the evening ).
Maddy and Elizabeth had a really great connection . They went off with an art teacher to have a look at an Alexander Calder exhibit at a local museum . Lots of stuffed animals were exchanged who are now imigrating to Briton with the Ducks .
But to have the chance to sit and play music in quantity in the eveings was just what was needed. We actually found ourselves doing early Fairport Convention, I showed Geoff one of my faverites from the 60's : " Truck Drivers Queen" a classic . He had notes I didnt remember for Maddy Groves (Jane had every verse) and black Leg Minor or SkewBAll . Lots of Morris tunes as well . I sent Geoff home with a "Humanatone" that I hope makes it out at some aproppriate moment at the right session. Just ask and I am shore he will give you a demonstration of this inportant American traditional instroment .
It was also great fun to hear about so many mudcatters from them .
The perfect house guests and as we said a few minutes ago as they got in their car this will not be the last time we gett togtether.
As always in these moments it is time to thank MAX again .. What magic can happen when like minded people get together and Max you really have made a vehicle for helping THAT to happen ..
                  All the best , Guy

Guy - the chimes of the clock commonly known as 'Big Ben' are called 'Westminster Chimes' and are nearly always reproduced wrongly!

However... today and tomorrow, until 4pm, they won't be heard at all - The chimes are 'closed for maintenance' - first time they've been silenced for 20 years, for repair and cleaning. I hope they find the time to retune them too... one of them is slightly out and makes me wince every time I hear it!

Hope the Ducks are OK.

The Ducks have gone from our house south east to Mystic Seaport for two days .That would put them on the plane either this afternoon or tomorrow . Its easy for me to loose time so Im a bad one to talk . I thought they said they were getting on the plane Saterday afternoon but that wouldnt give them 2 days in Mystic witch is the main thing I remember them saying !! . If theeyr hotel room had hook up Geoff said he would let us all know how they were doing .. I think the twins will like the aquarium if they find the time. Its on the same ticket so I hope they get there as well . Happy QUACKING !!

well, I'm sorry to say " they got to enjoy some American hospitality" since they were horn-swoggled by their rental car company, lost in NYC, stuck in traffic, burglarized and had a stretch of rainy, depressing horrible weather - but CAN say I was glad to meet them all, and sincerely hope that they managed to have a good time despite all.

Good thing they didn't have Jack with them on the entire trip though...who knows what added complications he would have raised!
