In noticed in the database there is also a song called Brown Girl which has similar lyrics and has a tune. Ther version of The Banks of the Bann I am familiar with is sung to a tune I first knew as a hymn. "Lord of all Hopefulness, Lord of all Joy". The hymnbook says the tune is a traditional Irish tune called Slane. I could not find that in the database though I guess it may have been used for other folk songs. Anybody know?

Anyway if you need any held with this particular tune, post a message and I'll do what I can put it in ABC format.

Ian Kirk mentioned a song called the Banks of the Bann as being the same tune as the hymn named in his post.

That more than likely is the song which is better known as the Star of the County Down. The lady in the song is referred to as Rosie McCann, from the Banks of the Bann, she's the Star of the County Down.

Hi Jack

Seem to have a wire or two crossed here. What I meant to say was that there are a few songs in the DT referring to a guy named Delaney (whether of donkey fame or not I know not). One is the Banks of the Bann and anoher is called Brown Girl. The words to both and the metre are somewhat similar. The Banks of the Bann does not have a tune attached to it but Brown Girl does.

The tune to Brown Girl was not familar to me. I have however heard the Banks of the Bann sung to the Hymn tune I mentioned and it makes a fine rendition. However having looked at it again I see that to make it fit the Hymn tune I was banging on about one needs to shorten the first line of each verse by a syllable or so - interesting.

The Star of the County Down - I love it but Delaney don't appear. Whether he knew Rosie will forever mystify us and whether it was him or his donkey will mystify us further.

How I finish this message will also mystify me until I reach th.......
