I can't believe the whole staff of the fall weekend is superlative. I've gone to a lot of these weekends because the Pinewoods members are interesting & fun, & it is nice to get out of the city. To have the weekend in a hotel with private baths and good food and still cost less than Camp Friedman is GOOD. To have Roustabout, Erica Weiss, and Lisa Null all at the same time is fantastic.
This summer after the wonderful picnic hosted by Jean Ritchie and George Pickow, when Lisa Null's name was mentioned, someone who was grumbling about this and that flaw or imperfection, switched to elaborate and enthusiastic praise of Lisa's singing. I've always liked Lisa and her music, but coming from a person who was dissatisfied with almost everything, this was strong praise.

Since I started this thread, I would like to take the chance to encourage all of you to avail yourselves of these opportunities. No matter what level you may feel your singing is at, you will find encouragement, and you will learn much about our beloved folk music. You will make friends, and you will feel the warmth and fulfillment that only happens when beautiful souls lift voices up together. And you will be contributing to the perpetuation of our music and our craft.

Join these organizations. And do yourself a favor and go to these weekends. Big ole Mick guarantees that you will not regret it.

All the best,

Mick Lane

The winter weekend is truly special, relaxing and a time to listen to and to make your own music all week long.

In addition, it's a great place to bring a spouse or friend or child or anyone who may not be as into it as you are. Since there are no workshops, people do feel freer to go into town or skiing or read that nice novel by the fireplace surrounded by music. We also have our jigsaw puzzles that for some people are impossible to pass by without joining in!
For children of all ages, the hill in front of the main building, with snow, if there is snow, is a great place to go sledding. And of course it is great to take a walk around the grounds.
There are still places left! Come and join us.

This one of the best events of the year. A chance to jam non-stop all weekend. Wonderful things happen when you put people together in a room with instruments and voices for that length of time with no interruptions (except for food, bathrooms, and sleep). You remember songs you thought you had forgotten. Harmonies seem to create themselves. Unexpected instrumental combinations happen. You relax and forget your inhibitions and music creates an energy and community unlike anything else. Not too late to sign up and see for yourself.

Greetings:

I'm bringing this old thread back to life to remind people that the Folk Music Society of New York (NY Pinewoods Folk Music Club) 2007 Winter Weekend is coming up Friday to Sunday, February 2 to 4, at the Warwick Conference Center in nearby Warwick, New York. Instead of a formal program, there is a free form weekend of jamming, singing, and relaxation in pretty and peaceful surroundings. More information is available at the FMSNY website [http://www.folkmusicny.org].

we mostly ate fruit and salads, though Mick did contribute a cake
which he didn't partake of because he was too busy picking and singing
we had a lovely time, so thanks to our hosts Jean and George and John and to everyone else who was there and to Pinewoods society for organising this event and many others

Jean , saying hello to you is always refreshing--because it's an oral HI Jean.

I sure do wish I'd been a part of it. Thinking about the times I was on staff at Pinewoods at Camp Friedman and also doing concerts for them --- way back when --- certainly brings back good memories.

You can view a not very close photo of moi doing a concert for 'em at the South Street Seaport in NYC---with the bridge in the background -- at my photo folk site.

And you said that Mick gained 45 or 50 new friends there.

But, also, you said that right after mentioning all the good food. So I was sure you were gonna say that Mick had gaind 45 or 50 new pounds there. I'm sure if it'd been ME, I would've been a close second!! Maybe first.-----(There, I said it before Mick could!!!!)

Love, Art

Mick- your presence and music were a real "shot in the arm" to our annual gathering. The hottest day of the year, but our yard is shady and there was a breeze; everyone relaxed and made music, listened to each other (not always easy, but there are no "standards" here- we listen and encourage everyone, even monotones and beginning pickers), ate wonderful food, made new friends. And you, Mick, gained 45 or 50 new ones there! We're all grateful that you made the tedious trip across the GW Bridge and through endless traffic, but hope that you will do it again- we loved having you here. There were three other Catters, too- myself, Phillipa from Ireland, and Suffit of course who helped hold everything together. And we Pinewooders do appreciate your good words on our behalf, and welcome you to USA-East!   Jean

Yesterday I was fortunate enough to attend the annual picnic of this venerable organization. Our own kytrad (Jean Ritchie) was the host. She is as gracious and welcoming as she is beautiful!! And it was a wonderful gathering of singers. Pinewoods is conducting it's membership drive and I want to encourage all Mudcatters in the general area to join. These organizations are one of the ways we "pass it on". And they are vital.

In fact let this thread serve as a plea on behalf of all the folk societies. If you live in Philly, there is the Philadelphia Folksong Society. If you are in the Metro Washington DC area, there is the Folk Society of Greater Washington DC. We must support these organizations or they will disappear. Many are in need of new members or they will disappear. Please use this thread to promote membership in your own area.

Folks, some of my most satisfying musical moments have come as a result of these great organizations. I have made many new friends some whom will remain close to me as long as I am on this side of the sod.

Thanks Joy, Steve, and all the other members of Pinewoods who made me feel welcome. And most of all to our Jean. Your hospitality and warmth is not equalled. Long may your song be sung.

All the best,

Mick
