Happy Birthday!

Frederick, duke of York

was born 8/16/1763
(d1/5/1827)

He's the guy on the column in Waterloo Place & was C-in-C of the British Army through most of the Napoleonic wars. He's also the guy that wasn't sure if he were getting it up or not.

Oh the grand old Duke of York,
         He had ten thousand men,
He marched them up to the top of the hill,
And he marched them down again.

"The Grand Old Duke of York," from Gambit Book Of Popular Verse, Geof Grigson.

ALSO:
Late News: Grand Old Duke of York's Regiment in Drugs Bust Shame.
TEN THOUSAND men are being charged with narcotics offences after their "trip" to a hill neighbouring their barracks. "The men were found wandering aimlessly up and down the hill," said police. "When they were up, they were really, really up and when they were down, they were really, really down, which is a classic symptom of substance abuse." [thanx Sid Taylor]
