I haven't heard of or been to recently, but I don't get around much anymore. The rest are ongoing on a weekly basis. These do not include the many sessions outside the Boston & immediate area. These are all usually well attended. Any where from 4-5 to I heard the Green Briar a week ago had upwards of 35, it wouldn't have been surprising to find there, I know Paddy Cronin & Larry Reynolds (& sons 1,2 or 3) & likely Seamus Connelly, Johnny Cunningham (beginning to sound like a fiddle session?), Joe Duranne(sp?), Bill Black, & I'm sure there where some that sat out & said the hell with it. The weekly paper, the Irish Emigrant along with the Thus Calender section of the Boston Globe would list these places & in the local telephone book. Somerville, Cambridge & Brookline all border Boston & are not far from downtown. Brighton & Jamaica Plain are sections of Boston. VT is Vermont, my neighbor to the West, I'm actually in New Hampshire, 40 miles north of Boston. If you of anyone else need more info on places in Boston I'd be glad to help. Barry |

I found a website here celticweb purporting to list all the Irish pubs in Boston.. They have a Druid in Cambridge which I am assuming is not the one you refered to in Somerville (Excuse my ignorance of American geography). There were one or two other gaps in the info they have compared to what you posted.. i.e. Green Briar, O'Leary's and Tir Na Nog (Didn't that used to be the name of a group in the 70's?). Big Mick- Any help is greatly appreciated, no matter how long it takes to compile.. What I'm really after are venues that can be "recommended" as opposed to just listings out of local papers etc where it could be "hit & miss" as to whether you are going to get a good session or not. SingsIrish (aka you know what it spells).. fancy meeting you here. I need not tell you about waiting for things and my patience, you know already. From: Barry Finn Date: 10 Jan 99 - 12:04 AM Hi Mick Lowe, There's only one Druid, it's in Cambridge not in Somerville as I posted (your ignorance of American geography is more than just fine). The Green Briar is in Brighton. It's one of the largest Boston sessions which doesn't make it one of the best but you'll find other visiting headliners droping in on a few of their local peers there, it's probably the friendlest & the most tolerant towards those who are of less ability. This is an carrying on with alot of the same people that attended the Brookline Village Coach House sessions that ended when the place was sold maybe10 yrs ago. I remember at these sessions groups like Silly Wizard, Touchstone, Ossian, DeDannan & a host of others coming in to sit & play & sing. The Druid is somewhat of a younger crowd, very high quality & high energy. Both here & the Briar you'll find some singing too. O'Leary's (haven't been there in a very long time) is also of high quality but maybe not as high energy as the Druid & not much in the way of singing either. Tir Na Nog, I believe was the name of a group awhile back. I've never been here but have heard it to be a pretty good sesion, don't know about any singing here. Maybe half or better of the session pubs in Boston are owned by those that are musicians themselves, I'd like to find out if that's common in other areas? There's also a singing session (mostly Irish) at the Grand Canal in downtown on Canal St. Althought there aren't many sessions in the Boston area that really push singing since the Village Coach House you'll find that the music level is on the whole to be top shelf no matter where you go (which makes it a little hard on those not yet quite grounded). The Kingston Irish Folk Music Club holds two sessions monthly. The First Friday of each month, currently held in the Parish Hall of St. Francis of Assise Church, Frontenac. A variety of workshops (tin whistles, bodhran, Irish dancing, etc.) start at 7:00p.m. with the main session starting at 8:00 p.m. Admission is $2.00, no booze, no smoking, but tea and cookies are available. Third Sunday of each month, in the Dragons Lair at the Kingston Brewing, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Admission $2.00. No smoking. The best of beer available at the bar downstairs. Just back from the Glackin / Ó Domhnaill "do" in the CBPPU, Antrim Road, Belfast. What a night !!!! Tickets for "X" people sold - 2xX turned up !! Local musicians set the scene and the two boys did the rest. And what a "rest" it was. The CB is now becoming *the place* to be for ITM in North Belfast. In conversation with an bheirt during the interval, I found out that they are past pupils of the Brothers. They both applied for membership on the spot. Happy Days. The first time I was invited to the place, there were accordian, bodhran and fiddle players falling off the walls. I went out there with Brian Conway, his sister, Rose Flanagan, his wife, Bernadette Fee Conway, and Eilleen Goodman expecting the same. Only one person came out of the "audience" to play with us. It was Eileen Ivers of Riverdance and Chieftains fame. All of the above grew up together in the same New York "hedgerow schools" of Irish music taught by the late Martin Mulvihill and the late Maureen Glynn. It was quite a night! I have the name of the place and a rough idea of where it is. When I get the telephone number and other details, I'll send them along to you.

There are plenty of sessions in Lincs, a couple of those I go to in the north of the county are; The Sloop Inn, Waterside Road, Barton on Humber, North Lincs. Every Tuesday. Totally anarchic, no bosses, cliques or stars, plenty of Irish sets, music from trad to Christy Moore & Bob Dylan, plenty of singing as well. There's something very unusual about this one, it's well worth trying out. Oh yes, and ALL levels are welcome. The Nag's Head, Wootton, North Lincs. First Sunday each month. A local fiddle club uses this as a post-meeting workout - not much singing (except me!) but some truly excellent fiddling, box playing and guitar work. Both are very friendly and welcoming, drop by if you're in the area. The Sloop serves sandwiches as well! |

Starts up around 8:30 PM. It's at Guinon's, a tiny (incredibly tiny, about the size of my computer screen) newstand/deli/pub-in-the-back-room place. Very friendly, all welcome if they can squeeze in! It's at the end of Lower Station Road, right by the train station. Cheers! |

Bagatelle, is for the most part a gig, however, we are very welcoming to anyone whod like to play. Our core band is Gordon Abrams on flute, a student of Charlie Cohans brother, who I am embarassed to say, I am blanking on his name, Mary Shannon, an American cousin of the Shannons who own Connors in Dolin, Co. Open session roughly 4:30 to 7:30 There are also ceilis every Tuesday evening 8:00 to 11:00ish. You'll find bodhrans, pipes, fiddles, etc. It's frequented by professional musicians and music majors from Northwestern U. It's very traditional so know your chops and traditional melodies. Oh, the pints are poured right and the chowder is fantastic. It's all at Tommy Nevins Pub in downtown Evanston (sorry, I don't have the phone# but it's an 847 area code. -peace. |

Chester UK "Gardners Arms" Thursday nights... mainly tunes, some songs. Carrigaline, Co Cork, Ireland, "Rosies Bar" Monday nights.. fantastic session, mainly tunes. Glanmire, Co Cork, Ireland. Tuesday nights, "the Heron's Perch" mainly unaccompanied singing, (bit like an old parlour party.....) Listowel, Co Kerry, Ireland, "The Maid of Erin", sometimes a good session on Thursday nights. |

From: Mick Lowe Date: 04 Dec 99 - 07:38 PM Again I express my thanks to all who have taken the time to submit venues here.. but I need to reinforce the image I have here on the mudcat of being either perdantic/picky/a perfectionist.. or what you will. The aim of creating a venues page on my site was that I could offer as much information as possible to would be visitors to a particular locale. and although I thank the likes of Melbert, I would like to be able to give anyone looking for venues in whatever town/city/or whatever, slightly more info.. i.e a more definitive address, what's going on down at that particular venue.. how to get there or at least how to contact them and double check what nights/days the session is running To which end I've created a simple "form" to fill in which you can download in a zip format from HERE Again I thank all who have contributed to this. Come to the White Heather Club on Woodward Avenue, just north of Nine Mile Road, on a Thursday night. We've begun to talk about songs in the Sean Nos...and, if we're brave enough, sing a few as well. We both have a lot of such songs collected down through the years and we sing them unaccompanied. Yes, it's a bit rarified and not to everyone's taste, but we also felt that to invite other singers would be important if this idea was to grow. After all, you wouldn't want to be listening to just the pair of us. There are more details in the URL below. I discovered the Traditional and Folk Singers' Club in Boston two years ago and it is wonderful. It is not all sean nos by any means but nearly all of what is sung is traditional Irish, Scottish or English. We collect weekly dues (a dollar) and use the funds for guests performers...we have so far had Frank Harte, Sean Tyrrell, Maggie Kristol, even Liam's brother! It is rare to find a sessiun friendly to singers (I find there have to be at least one or two musicians I am friendly with leading the sessiun and even then I wait to be asked; until then I play the boudhran--which I am far less facile with then I am with my voice so I play it quietly but in rhythm at least-- and keep my mouth shut).

Song occasionally, treated with respect. Dancing by chance and as space allows. For example: yesterday, among the usual assortment of flutes, fiddles and whistles we had five pipers. At different times during the session three complete sets were danced. Drop by if you're in town. |
