Subject: TUNE REQ: Hail, Smiling Morn
From: Animaterra

I'm sorry to rush the season but it is the new year, and I'm putting together another program to be performed in May. I found in the DT a song, "Hail, Smiling Morn" whose words seem to express the feelings we get here in the frozen north when spring finally arrives (around Memorial Day at the end of May!). Does anyone know the tune?

Hello, Allison:

It's the opening (and title) song of John Roberts and Tony Barrand's Hail Smiling Morn, one of their "Nowell Sing We Clear" recordings, subtitled A Pageant of Mid-Winter Carols. We have it on our web site. Drop me a line via e-mail, and we can talk about it. I'm not tune-sending capable, I fear.

Sandy

I don't know if you're still looking, but you can find a MIDI File HERE.

I also have a score in PDF format if you want to PM me with an e-mail address.

Dave - *I'm* still looking - it is one of the DT "missing tunes" -

could you send a pdf to lpola@edutech.org?

The reason that the tune isn't in DT is that it's for 4 voices (SATB) and the old Songwright "Sing" feature could only handle a single track.

BTW The piece is not a "Spring Carol" it is a "Glee" and was written by Reginald Spofforth.

Will mail you the score MMario - I already had your mail address from "Anchor God".

If anyone has 3 or 4 part dots, or even just the words on this I would love a copy. I know it from years ago but only one part, also only one verse. JohnB

JohnB - see my first posting on this thread. Just send me an e-mail address and I'll send you one. It's the full 4-part score on 4 pages. It's in Adobe Acrobat PDF file format. You can pick up the MIDI File from my earlier posting. There is only one verse, but there are two sets of repeats which makes it plenty long enough. If you're a Mudcat member, as I think you are, just reset your cookie and you can PM me if you don't want to post your e-mail address.

The tune is also to be found on some of the links from a recent thread on the South Yorkshire Carols Blicky. A site which has both words and a MIDI file can be found here Blicky. If you use Internet Exploder, Hail plays in the background, but on Netscrape it doesn't.
Hail Smilimg Morn is a great favourite at the South Yorks events, although the words they sing around Sheffield do differ slightly from the printed version.

Quacking along!
Geoff the Duck,
p.s. I am waiting for the feathered version - Quail Smiling Morn......

Thanks so much Geoff the Duck for brightening my day - I've just moved offices and I'm sitting in the middle of a pile of papers wondering where on earth to put everything! I went into Blinky, and Hail Smiling Morn started playing immediately. Very therapeutic. The tune is very dear to the Saddleworth area where I live, and we always start our Saddleworth Folk festival with a brass band playing it. Cheers!

Thanks Dave, I am a member but post mostly from work where I am cookiless. I have had a virus problem at home, so as soon as I have resolved that I will give you a PM. Thanks again, JohnB.
