There are a few renditions of "Les bœufs" on YouTube now 1 (1931), 2 78rpm on a gramophone (1902), 3 -shortened but you can watch two oxen been yoked though I don't think it'll be of any use to us.

Warning: that old recording of "Les Boeufs" is preceded by a painfully loud blast of scratching. The tune is good but sounds like opera. Thanks for the link, Monique. I'm always interested in the tune for a song.

Btw, these Provençal lyrics are sung to the tune to a 19th century song called "Les bœufs" that you can hear sung by the Dutch-born baritone Henri Albers at the first link of that page.

This is not French, guys, this is Provençal written in Roumanille spelling. It means,

Mother, the bells are wobbling
Tonight, wobble-wobbling*,
The sheep, the ewes ring/tinkle.
Where does this racket come from?
The cat jumps in its (lit. "the") basket,
Fido barks in the fields
And the rats in the hayloft
Wallow like bandits.

* or any other way you may express the swaying movement of the bells in proper English

The supposed lyrics (in French) are:

Maire, lei campagno gansaion
A questo nue, balin-balan,
Leis avé, lei fedo sounation

Thanks to Chip & Masato for rescuing me so quickly on my last request- I fear this one might be tougher. The lyrics to Midwinter's Night, (Blackmore's Night,) are simple to come by, but they didn't post the foreign language verse. It took me a year just to get Candice to tell me what language they were in. (Provencial French. I had guessed Breton, so I get half a gold star...*L*)

Never the less, she still hasn't posted that verse, and I was so caught up in figuring out the language that I forgot to ask if the song was just a transliteration of a traditional song, or original, or a mix of the two.

Anyway, if anyone knows of a Provencial French folk song which could even be close, I'd appreciate the lyrics... (The free translators just don't *do* archaic tongues, dangit!)

The lyrics I *do* have:

"The bells are ringing
On Mid Winters Night
The moon sets all alone
And once again I try to sleep before the morning light

Too soon the sun will come a-calling
over the hills in our little town
Too soon the snow will start falling
over the world without a sound
