As early as 1583 in print (OED), the meaning had been extended to apply to dealers in specific goods, e. g. ships' supplies, grain, etc.

But the corn at such a chandlers would usually be wheat, barley or similar grains, and two ears of it wouldn't make much of a supper!

CORN-CHANDLER, n. [Chandler, a dealer in candles, is supposed to be from the French chandelier; but what has this word to do with corn and ship, in corn-chandler and ship-chandler? In these words, chandler seems to be a corruption of the Teutonic handler, a trader.] A dealer in corn.

The Unknown Apostle, (his gospel is apocryphal – talk about your oxymorons!) St. Bartholomew's Day is August 24th. For someone who probably didn't exist, Bartholomew had a lot of work to do - He was patron of Armenia, cheese merchants, platerers [sic], tanners; against nervous tics or, depending on the source, patron of bookbinders, butchers, corn-chandlers, dyers, glovers, furriers, leather-workers, plasterers, shoemakers, tailors, tanners, vine-growers, and Florentine salt and cheese merchants. He is invoked against nervous disorders and twitchings. Therefore Bartholomew Fair is held on this day.
