Some of the little "bands" playing together could give some of the concert bands a run for their money. I think quite a few of them must have been at the Milton Street workshops and talking of those I wish to say sorry to Stu for not attending the guitar workshops this year especially as he had given us "homework" from last year! I attended, as an observer, the accordion and English concertina workshops which were excellent. Thanks to all concerned. I love the Fylde Festival because it does have something for everyone, good singarounds, good sessions and lots of varied fringe activities to make you want to be in more than two places at he one time. That takes quite some organising and planning. On the point about the same songs etc.. yes, that does grate a bit but when the locals are asked to perform their party pieces by request what are they to do? Most of them only have "3 song slots" anyway! It is the booked and paid for acts that should be looking to their laurels and not performing the same sets in the same order at all their venues over the weekend. Sorry if that is too hypercritical but... I am allowing for requests though 'cos they are special. I don't think that I have heard requests like "will you play the same set this evening at the concert 'cos it was all wonderful"! Thanks again Alan and Co for a great festival and am looking forward to next year, Eric Bogle, Mrs Ackroyd and all the "fringe repeats"! Lang may yer lum reek!! Ann |

I danced with a well known morris side in the early days of Fylde when I numbered amongst the youngsters. It was most depressing to see that there appears no-one coming up to take our place. I do agree with the end of the pier comment - it was old hat back then! No one has mentioned my own discovery of the festival - Rory Elis! Great! |

As part of the Guitarists concert at Fylde, Ken Nicol played the Water is Wide using some techniques which he attributed to the arrangement on Eric Roche's DVD. But I digress... at least that was the only thing to spoil my weekend, I have discovered some people I didn't know about, saw people that I liked already, didn't get to any sessions or singarounds though, possibly due to laziness more than anything and you couldn't have asked for better weather I hope it's as good next time I go. muppitz x |

The difficulty of joining a session in a room with a closed door is obvious, but we'd missed it. Probably a re-jig of the downstairs area would allow for youth sessions there again (or on a weekend like Fylde this year a session outside) The original idea of Milton St as you know was to provide non-licensed premises where under 18s could play easily. We need to revisit that perhaps. Signing in and out was to provide some security for younger folkies: we feel that we are responsible for the safety of the - say - under 14s and that was just a way of achieving it. But we don't want it to be a disincentive, so we will certainly look at it again. I'll PM you about the programming in more detail; you may be able to help us. Stu and Rusty |

Speaking from the young generation of Folkies (I'm 23 and was with 3 friends aged 22, 21 and 17) I found the bands playing this year were very lacking for my taste. Don't get me wrong, Artists such as Waterson:Carthy were brilliant and I have loved seeing them. It was ventured earlier in this thread about lacking in bands to bring in the young generation, I have been going to fylde for well over 8/9 years now and have seen some amazing acts. Groups like Bluehorses and Wolftones are some of the greatest i've ever seen and if they played again I wouldn't miss them for anything! However, there's obviously a large number of "Older" folkies (if you'll excuse the term) that don't like some of the sounds from these groups. I remember a number of comments after Wolftones played and half of the main hall walking out when Bluehorses played. This leads to people complaining and these groups not being invited back and does therefore alienate a fans of these groups. It's impossible to please everyone in a festival and this is understandable, however it's a shame people will say there isn't a large youth population at fylde as in the last 9 years i've seen the population grow considerably. On a final note, the Milton Street Signing in procedure. This is a first in the 3 years of Milton Street. I popped in at 1:40 to catch the last 20 minutes of the youthwave session. I asked the people there if the session was still on, to be told they were on all day. I explained that I was after the session not a workshop and I was invited to start one in one of the empty rooms. Finally I found out that the session was still running but was in a room now not the main hall, the door was shut and I didn't feel like opening the door and disturbing things to join in. And as for having to sign in and out, I understand that for fire safety reasons a record needs to be kept but a simple count of incomming and outgoing people should have suited better and would have caused the queue to enter the building. "The guitarists" spot on Sat lunchtime with Ken Nicol and Brian Willoughby was a benefit concert for Eric and family; the exit collection and Penny Dreadful receipts made over £500.00 for this very worthy cause. Enjoyed the sets I was involved in and looking at the set list from the three "local bands" I was playing with I must apologise to John Lancs as at least 8 of the 70+ songs we sang over the 3 days were performed last year as well, by way of an excuse 4 were requested. Only one complaint, why oh why can't you get a glass of tap water in the Wyre Lounge? Excuses given, "It's not fit for consumption due the the mains burst", "we're not allowed to", "we sell bottled water, not give tap water away". Many of the Morris team members, who had been dancing in the sun should have had the availability of water, and although it might be traditional for them to rely on beer to top up their liquid intake not all do. Any chance of water dispensers next year? May I add that the Euston, Steamer and Victoria (not sure of any of the others)had no problem supply water & Ice to anyone who requested it. Other than that small "whinge" a great (but very tiring)time was had by all. PB |

By and large with folk artists, what they do on stage is what they have done with their lives - often at terrific personal cost. Nobody is dumb enough to be in it for the money. if you knew anything at all about folk music you would know that pub venues where there is no cover charge need at least one act that is 'flameproof'- that is to say: knows their instruments really thoroughly; can pull together cohesively an audience when some dodgy experimental songwriter has half emptied the place - not everybody in bull ring gets to kill the bull - not everybody gets the privilege of making demands on an audiences attention in the way that say Martin Carthy does and his many fans expect of him. the people you are criticising are doing a different job, and I was quite impressed with the skill with which they did it. anyway the workshops had my attention, I wish I could have attended them all. I confined my comments to those in the published programme (i.e. part of the festival) and not the guys and gals in singarounds. There is much, as I said, that is good about the festival but there are some things that are really, really, awful. I really am bored to death of people doing mid-atlantic "Isle of Soap on a Rope" gloop and naff Lanky knockabout. Some of these performers could be excellent if they changed their material. Why are we Lancastrians so keen to put up with this 1970's end-of-pier variety show drivel? It is a tradition - but so were Val Doonican and The Krankies, and thankfully they aren't booked at folk festivals. I would like my culture presented in a better light, if possible. There is very varied material indigenous to the North West if people could be bothered to dig it out. There isn't any excuse for singing the same 5 pop songs ad nauseam - especially when linked with the same tired anecdotes. It has as much to do with folk as karaoke. One of the things that strikes me about the Fylde audience is that it is pretty much like that of many folk clubs - moribund - rather than other folk festivals. Most other festivals I go to have a far higher proportion of younger people (i.e. under 60) in the audience than Fylde. We all know that folk clubs are ageing, on the whole, but this is not my perception of folk festivals. Fylde does do its best to run competitions and workshops for youngsters but the main programme is obviously deeply unattractive to wouldbe festival goers in the their 20's, 30's and 40's. It doesn't have to get hip - but it does need to get interesting. There are many more younger people at the far smaller National Festival, for example, which presents a greater proportion of trad acts. Every festival has years when its headline programming is not to everyone's taste. There were some acts that I found wonderful this year (Niamh Parsons, Sara & Kieron) and others that I couldn't care less whether I ever see again (John Wright, Cathryn Craig). In a successful festival, though, the personal appeal of the headline acts is only incidental. The "glue" that holds together a successful artistic programme is the local and lesser-known acts. Unfortunately, this is the area where Fylde has become very weak. Stalwarts of the local clubs are presented - year in, year out - as programmed events and yet can't be bothered to expend any effort in rising to the occasion by learning the odd new song or rediscovering aspects of their tradition. I am glad Alan Bell offers them the opportunity to shine in front of a wider audience but deeply disappointed that they waste the break he has given them. Perhaps he should use the same principle he seems to use with the headline acts i.e. you don't get a booking two years together? If they had a year off they could at least get the songbooks out. Perhaps a couple of the North West festivals could get together to "swap" some of their local acts for a year? Folk is like anything else: it needs to have a point if people are to carry on buying tickets. As I said, I'm voting with my feet next year and will give Fylde another chance in a few years. |

We're pleased with the workshop structure at Fylde and the use of Milton Street Community Centre. Ken uses Fylde guitars, and has just had one built for him "Long-time folk guitar hero Ken Nicol has been playing Fylde for over 10 years and now has a new Fylde signature model. He wanted a guitar that had all the power and intensity of the Falstaff but with a sweeter more mellow tone. He choose a Western Red Cedar top that achieves the sound he was after exactly." Stu |

Elbow Jane were fantastic, even with hangover(!), John Wright and the lovely Joe's brought the house down, James Keelahan is a new favourite of mine, however I can't say the same for the John McCusker band, sadly they weren't to my tastes, very good, no denying that but IMHO they lacked bite. All in all a great festival, glad I managed to make it up there, the only thing to marr the weekend was the theft of various items from the Moor & Coast tent, sadly, I think they may have their reservations about coming again. muppitz x |

With so many events it really felt like there was a festival going on - not just a crummy concert I never knew Fleetwood was so nice - previously I had only been to the folk club there on cold , frostbitten winter evenings in August. The dancers and their acompanying musicians were terrific. Ken Nicol's guitar workshop was really good - made me want a better guitar - but these are the hazards before us.. The stalls/craft market cost me a fortune but were brilliant. It was great meeting other songwriters in the songwriters workshops. To be honest I couldn't get to see all the things I wanted to see - so many events clashed. Okay I made a prat of myself doing my opening number at the midnight concert with an untuned guitar, but I am too old to care. so there! thankyou to the locals (Pete Skinner and martin roche)for telling me to get there - a terrific experience! Having been involved in getting a Festival together, first may I say "well done" to Alan and his team, may I also point out the following:- You complain "same old faces, doing the same old sets", I presume you are referring to the Fringe events in local pubs and hotels? The FREE events? Having spent several happy hours over the festival in the like of The Steamer and the North Euston, which along with the other fringe venues that I attended, they that were packed to the doors with people who appeared to be enjoying the artists and singing along with the same old songs and even requesting them, I also heard many old songs I hadn't heard for years and a few newly penned songs and poems! I also watched and enjoyed the Morris Dance Teams, even though they were dancing the "same old dances" to the same "old tunes" its almost a Tradition at Folk Festivals. If you took the Fringe, Free events away from any Festival (and Fylde offers more than most) you would have even more Hanging around to do and also miss out on a lot of good music. So maybe instead of knocking these people you should say Thank You for giving up their time and talent to help entertain a lot of festival goers, including myself. Well Done Alan, The Festival Team, The Artist (both BIG and small)and also the sound crew and Stewards (who always get forgotten)and everyone one else who went to the trouble and hard work to put together a great weekend for us Festival Goers. John Lancs - PM me in confidence about what you felt wasn't up to scratch - we try always to add to the Festival, but retain a good proportion of what people see as the essence of Fylde. We were delighted that the whole festival seemed to avoid any major cock-ups. The worst we're aware of was the guy who lit a cigar under a smoke detector and caused a mass evacuation of the Marine Hall in the middle of the final concert! Total evacuation, no panic, 800+ people in ninety seconds flat! Concert back on within less than ten minutes. Best fire drill ever. New Young performers - Riddlers from Southport: four fiddlers - book 'em. PM me for details. Big plus to 11 year old diva Niamh Boadle who stepped in and did a set of three songs in the N. Euston when an artist was delayed We believe that the wide choice of Fylde (140+ events) is a strength. It does mean the Fringe is flourishing (and free) and that local acts/new acts get exposure. Another Fylde success, lots to do, lots to see and hear but too many venues too difficult to access using walking aids. Managed to get to Hughie Jones at the Museum but that proved too much physically. Great hour though with great songs and stories. Was able to get to the superbe Friday Night concert and the even more superbe Saturday night (line up above) - what a weekend and the icing on the cake was the Alan Bell concert after which we had to leave. As we were leaving Gosport the radio presenter was saying "It's grim up north!" - It certainly wasn't, the sun shone on the Fylde and the the music is in our hearts. Thanks to Alan and his committee - see you next year as the fat lady did NOT sing! |

For a start, Fylde are better than any other festival I know at encouraging young and talented artists, the "headline acts" of the future, and giving them a platform to perform. I also think it's great that Fylde do retain a committment to their local artists, and those I saw - Strawhead, Pat and Ken, Scolds Bridle for example - all worked hard and came across really well. There is too much hanging about trying to avoid the same faces doing identical sets to previous years. It is great that local acts are offered so prominent a role ... but they shouldn't abuse it by not being bothered to learn new material or refresh their old stuff. Too much is tired, badly presented and, frankly, boring. I'll be skipping Fylde for a couple of years in the hope that things improve. Enjoyed some of the headline acts - Sara Grey & Kieron Means, Niamh Parsons, Waterson:Carthy, and the John McCusker band were great. There just seemed to be a lot less to tickle my fancy this year and acres of filler. I made no "discoveries" at all - everything was safe and predictable, with no notable new-to-me artists - which is unusual at a festival of this size. Enjoyed the dance displays in the pretty perfect setting of the Marine Hall gardens. |

Pre Festival events are going great The Euston was packed last night and Dave Cooper and his Motley Crew had 'em dancing and singing their hearts out. For anyone who wasn't there, Paul Wrigley was asked to sing a song from his new CD "Don't let them dance on your dreams", which will be released at the Festival, We've already had a chance to hear the CD, which consist mainly of Paul's own songs (in fact only one isn't) if you manage to get a copy do so its brill. and from the Penny Black rumour kitchen; Dave Cooper's Motley Crew will be getting a new member soon, I can't say who, but here's a clue: he's just made a new CD, writes his own songs and his initials are P.W. but it's just a rumour :0) See those who make it tonight at The Falcon Pre Festival fun and frolics at The Falcon from 8.00pm PB |
