If you run a radio show, know someone who does, can write a column for a folk-rag or can send one to those who speak about such things on the air, please please do. We want this one to hit the big-time, not just for fame but for many many reasons. For one htig, Bruce deserves it.

Promote it to those who can promote it more....you know you can!!

Oh, I have some big abstinence problems now.
I understand if you(Bruce) is busy and I honestly say: the time is yours. And that the day I will get this music will be reward enough for my patience.

I am talking about both the RCA-record and the new one.

I don't think this is meaningless spamming from me. I just want to express my feelings about the music and the waiting.

But now I will be away for one week maybe two or three. Hope I'll notice some great news when I come home.

Just back from the festival and, my goodness, Bruce was in fine form...not to mention Ron Bankley, and Jeri and April, who provided back-up vocals. The new CD is a "keeper"

Thanks, for reposting that message, gnu. Here's the hyperlink for Bruce's website:

http://www.brucemurdoch.com/

**

And I'm getting a kick out of the Google ads that appear right now on the bottom of this page. One ad says "Find peace". And the other ad says "Peace Quotes".

Given Bruce's Mudcat name I think that's funny.

But I'm known to have a weird sense of humor {humour}, so other people may not think those ads are funny.

But until that festival ends, Bruce has been a bit missing in action on Mudcat threads. And we need to "hear" from him-at least his songs if not his quotes.

Get it?

No?

Never mind.

:o)

I want to alert people that I just started a new Mudcat thread about Bruce Murdoch's new CD "Matters of the Heart". Here's the hyperlink to that thread: thread.cfm?threadid=112880&messages=1

Please post your comments about Bruce's new CD on that thread. And if you've heard some of the songs on that CD from radio shows that Bruce has been on, or otherwise, and are waiting with great anticipation to hear the actual CD, but haven't heard it yet, you can spend some of the time waiting for your CD talking about Bruce Murdoch's music on that new thread.

And last but not least, I announced on that thread and would like to announce on this thread that Bruce Murdoch has a new website at http://www.brucemurdoch.com/

That website was designed/developed by Mudcatter olddude {Dan O'Connell}, Dan volunteered his time, energy, and knowhow to make Bruce's website a reality. The website is still under construction, waiting for sound clips and other material from Bruce, but it's already looking good!

Thanks, Dan!!!

And thanks Bruce for your music.

Olddude,
We talked about doing a stores link to our web page but being the first year and so many things to put in place it was decided to hold off until next year. The idea was to sell hats, tee shirts and artist c/d. We would of course make a buck on the c/d and more on the other items.
Now our sound man just purchased some machine and wants to try and record the festival and download on c/d's with the possibility of adding this to the store when were ready. Naturally all musicians would be asked permission first if we could record them. Not sure how this is all going to work out but I'm hopeful.

Ad.

Go to your local public library. Ask for the CD and have some of your friends ask for it. Many of them will buy it if people ask for it -- sometimes one person, sometimes more. DON'T tell them where to buy it or it will look like a set-up.

Adrien, I absolutely agree with what you wrote.

I believe that we need to show our sincere appreciation of Bruce's CD by purchasing it. And "we" includes everyone Bruce listed on his CD notes.

I have already done so because-like Jeri said earlier in her 12 Jul 08 - 12:57 PM post to this thread-"I KNOW the CD is good. I KNOW his new songs are good, and the more he writes the better he gets."

But can we stop Bruce from giving away all his c/d's. I know he wants to personally thank so many friends, and yes, accept them with pride and personal comfort that he has touched us all. Then send him some money for his expenses. Bruce you may not want me to say this but I will. Fuck it.
He is coming all the way from Alberta at his expense and has not asked for a penny to perform the festival. Hay! I don't want to see this man hitching back. So let us all buy his c/d's . I also want to make a comment on a few others who are contributing in much the same way to see this first Apple Hollow Fest take root.

It is not possible to begin a festival unless you have money and I started this with "0" dollars. But all of a sudden these precious folks came forward and asked to play. I guess it is for the love of music. But I will tell you all now that our bills are paid thanks to local business. Grants are next to impossible in the first year. I just want to add that I just might have enough to pay for at least for a tank of gas to the musicians.

We are hoping for a good gate turn out and as well good bar return. All monies collected, and I mean every god damn cent will go into next year. So if we make say two grand than this will be a stepping stone to build on to pay the musicians next year. And I have told musicians that are performing this year that they will be invited back next year and paid scale for their generosity in coming this year for next to nothing.
Sure I could pay all the musicians from the gate receipts, but what about next year? I won't go begging for them to come back for a free bee.

I almost forgot. JOU TOU coming in from B.C.
Andre Thibault and his wife will be preforming. no Charge. Andre is from Verdun and worked for me about 10 years at the Douglas (psy.)Hospital in the entertainment area for the patients. And absolutely gifted musician and wonderful person.
Ad.

Azizi:
I think the next line is something like "the more you eat, the more you toot"...an example of great poetry and rhyming that I know Bruce surpasses on the new CD!! lol

Having lived in both Arkansas and Louisiana, I enjoyed your nativity story.....I moved from Sudbury, Ont. to Little Rock, AR and suddenly my name changed from Ken to Kean and went from one syllable to about eight or nine!!

Cheers,

Ken

Hey, old dude! Your comment [and mine] calls for a version of the children's rhyme "beans/beans/magical fruit" or however it goes...That's one I don't know, since I'm not fond of gross out rhymes. But you guys can sing it if you want.

**

Thanks, Bruce. Looking forward to it.

**

As to the question, what other marketing ideas can we think of for the festival, what about everyone who buys a CD gets a toy fire engine that has notes of one of Bruce's new songs instead of a siren? The fire engine would be in honor of Bruce's other interest.

And speaking of that, check out this post that I found in an old Mudcat thread-I think it's a hoot!

The Hickphonics lexicon left out "foal", you know that shiney stuff ya uses to wrap up leftovers, lumnum foal.
Ther is the story of the northerner who went south for Christmas and went to church. Outside was a nativity scene, pretty typical except that the wise men had on these big red hard hats. He asked the preacher after the service (sarviss?) what that was all about. The preacher replied, "Well it say in the Bible that the wise men came from a far"

Bubbler update - It went at least as far north as Two Rivers where I learned it.

You coulda come on down [or is it come up? or over?} to the once but no longer smokey city and let me hear your songs before your CD was released.

But alack, and alas {a lad?}, you were only joking.

I am sorry to say that we will not be selling any tee shirts. This was spoken about at great length but being the first year and very little $$$$ to work with, it was to great a risk. When I worked with "the other festival" we were left with way to many items. Then there is the size thing. Any way, not this year.

The guy with the photo of the naked dude in the beans started it!

I think Ron or Beer or somebody ought to print up a mess o' T-shirts.

I KNOW the CD is good. I KNOW his new songs are good, and the more he writes the better he gets. Another thing": although he's been around forever and he's older than dirt, (insert shit-eating grin here) his stuff really is something fresh and sublime. It feels like being middle-aged and tasting chocolate for the first time.

He also gets embarrassed easily, so we talk about less embarrassing things such as naked guys jumping out of various food products and wet T-Shirts. The CD is really good (although not trad folk) but there will be no naked or wet T-shirt clad people at Apple Hollow, unless Beer is not telling us something.

Hey, quokka!

You probably know this, but for people who may be reading this and saying "What the heck?", this thread was started to praise Bruce's songs that he wrote and sung some time ago and in 2005 put on a CD and sent to folks. And this thread is also about Bruce's new CD that is going to be released and sold for the first time at Beer's upcoming festival. And this thread is about folks relaxing, having fun, and enjoying each other's company while we wait for the debut of Bruce's CD that also features Ron Bankley's instrumentation.

We're celebrating with Bruce on his meeting a cherished goal. And, given the high quality of Bruce's other songs-the ones on those CD copies and newer ones that we heard via a podcast before Beer's festival last year where Bruce performed with Ron's guitar backing- we have a feeling that this long awaited CD is going to be a really good one.

If you can find it. No never mine, I'll refresh it so you will see it as soon as I sent this. On this site I list the mudcat members that will be here this year. Not as many as last year but a good representation for this year's first Apple Hollow.

Adrien: Thank you. I'm enjoying this immensely. I see from the website from last year's festival that you had a gathering of the Mudcat folks......are you intending to that again? I can't imagine what that would be like, sitting 'round a campfire, fueled by all the various wines recently discussed on this site.....

Reminds me of a fellow in Merry Olde Englande who was making up puns about the then-Queen. She informed him that if he ever told another pun in his life he would be hanged by the neck. He asked if he was receiving a pardon for his errant ways. The queen said, "A temporary pardon." He replied

"No noose is good noose!"

I have a $65 dollar idea. Wouldn't it be a blast to arrange 'concerts'/performances in every town or city named Franklin? Call it "The Franklin Adventure and Map Reading Tour". Probably get sh#t from the people who own the copyright on the turtle--but we could tell them it will be a very FAST tour and we wouldn't seem to be infringing their copyright or whatever it's called.

leeneia:

Go to: http://ezfolk.com/audio/bands/1338/ and you will find a sample of Bruce.

While this extended discourse on all things "Franklin" suggests that some of us have way too much time on our hands, I can't resist...so,

Florida does not appear to have a municipality, town, or city named "Franklin" but there is "Franklin County" in the northwestern panhandle of the State and it has a charming little town named Apalachicola, right on the Gulf.

But Bruce, my recommendation is that you save that trip for the next time you get booked for an early January concert in Montreal and the weather approaches "brass monkey" territory.

The plural of Illinois...there is no such thing. Illinois is all there is and all there ever can be. If you doubt this, ask my brothers who live there.

As for the possessive, it's "mine, all mine."

In case you didn't know it, the s in Illinois is silent.

There. That pretty much takes care of New England. There doesn't appear to be a Franklin in Rhode Island, but they may have an agreement to share Massachusetts's's. Some of these places don't have airports, but you can probably find someone who'll 'check you for weapons' for a small fee.

Hi, everyone. Amos has just sent me a CD of the Bruce Murdoch interview on CKUT the day before his January 4th concert in Montreal. The songs are great and, clearly, the years have not dulled Bruce's fine sense of humor. The only "sobering" part of the CD is Host Gerry's announcement of the weather that day.....-24 with a windchill in the -30s!!! Yikes!! There are many things I miss about Canada, most notably its social contract with its citizens, but winter weather is not one of them!! I'll be at the AppleMusicFest weekend in Franklin Center next weekend. I hope to see some of you there.

Ken, this thread from 2003 http://www.mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=63968#1070543 might be of interest, it is where Bruce first shows up, it also mentions Sean Gagnier's passing. It, by the way is what first brought me to Mudcat by looking for information on Bruce and has connected me to him, a friendship that I cherish greatly.

And to appear at the Apple Hollow Music Fest.......I'm looking forward to venturing north from southwest Florida for that event and to meet some of you there. Many of us probably shared some time and space in the Blue Lantern and the Yellow Door (and other venues) listening to Bruce many years ago.

By the way, speaking of those times.......in the song "Snowden", Bruce has the line ".....Gagnier showed me the door.....". I presume he is referring to Sean Gagnier, who was a fixture on the scene back in the late sixties as well. I remember he and Bruce used to duet on Ewan McColl's "Bringing in the Fishes". Anyone know whatever happened to him?

Much of this thread has dealt with what I presume is a self-produced CD version of Bruce's CBC album and I agree with the consensus that there are some great lyrics and singing on that album. I also think there were great moments on 33 1/3 Revolutions Per Minute despite the bad production (which many commentators have noted). Some of the political songs are as relevant today as they were then. In "Mary, You Are My Friend", Bruce writes,

"........But now machine guns testify, that Hitler's back again
All he's done is change his name, and perhaps go more insane....."

and later, "......Traitors govern us, they're inventing, lies to hide their wicked smiles...."

Man, if those words don't describe the current administration in Washington, what words could?

"Lay Down Our Drums" can serve as much as a peace anthem today as it did in 1968.

One of the nonpolitical songs "Justine's Blues" is stunning:

"Justine's got the blues, she says it's good enough for her,
She hopes it's good enough for you...."

and, "I'd like to help, she means what she says, hell if she'd only tell me what she means...."

To me, this song about the horrors of heroin addiction ranks up there with Neil Young's "Needle and the Damage Done" from "Harvest" and Tom Paxton's "Cindy's Crying" from "Tom Paxton 6".

I just realized that if this site is monitored by Homeland Security, those comments above about Bruce's political songs might land me on the "No Fly List" and I'll never get to the festival so I had better shut up before I did myself in deeper.

ciao

Thank you for your notes and I'm now a member. Adrien.....no, I don't think we crossed paths, at least not at Douglas Hospital. I grew up in Verdun on First avenue between Wellington and LaSalle so I obviously always knew where the "The NutHouse" was. I did my undergraduate degree in Applied Social Sciences at Sir George Williams University and knew a number of people who did either internships or volunteer work at Douglas. Ironically, after I went west and got my MSW at the University of British Columbia, my first social work job was doing rural community mental health inn Saskatchewan.

It is so neat to connect after all these years with friends/fans of Bruce Murdoch.

Hello........I'm just connecting to these various threads on mudcat concerning Bruce Murdoch. I went to Verdun High School at the same time as Bruce although we didn't know one another at the time. I distinctly recall him edging me out for the last spot on the VHS cross country team one year though I doubt he remembers that. Obviously, I have not, lol! Later, I followed his career at the many folk venues in Montreal in the late 60's. Lost touch with him when I moved to Vancouver in 1970 for graduate school and didn't see him again until the Northern Lights Folk Festival in Sudbury in either 1975 or 76 after I had begun my academic career at Laurentian University. Since then, I have pursued my academic career which has finally landed me here in Ft. Myers, Fl in southwest Florida.

I have both the 33 1/3 and CBC albums and a year or two ago, I used a piece of software to transfer them to CD (minus the clicks and pops from frequent playing). I did the same with the "Singer-Songwriter Project" on Electra. Bruce, if you are following this thread and don't mind me sending copies......I take it that the cd you distributed in '05 was the CBC album. I woulld be more than happy to send a copy of that to anyone interested, if you give approval.

Just the other day, I heard myself singing "Jericho" in my head and decided to Google Bruce and discovered all this wonderful information. Please let me know more about the forthcoming cd and about the live appearance "Beer" references in the last post.

Hi Emma,hope all is well.
New location for the festival this year and yes Bruce will be here to break it in.
Olddude, Bruce called me about 6 weeks ago around 11 at night and said "what do you think of this". He picked up his guitar and sand a new one he had just finished writing. I was awestruck. unbelievable. He is hoping to have the c/d on sale at our festival. Hope he brings plenty because I have this feeling that the folks are going to love his recent writings. Wish both of you could make it.

I could donate money or whatever it takes.
I'm new here and don't understand how things works, who is who and the english grammar. So execuse me if i'm not wanted here with my demands. But I really like what i've heard of Bruce, the somewhat bad produced 33 and 1/3 and SSP, but I want more and the fact that everybody seems think that there is better music than that made by Bruce makes me even more frustrayed over not knowing what to do to get it.

Please read this and try to understand a swede who not seems to understand.

Goldenrod was a suburb. In fact, one of the reasons the towns failed was because they were so intertangled that nobody could figure out which was which. And, of course, the mines at Golden Mountain failed -- there was no market for coprolite at the time, and now the location of the mine is forgotten. The Lost Dungheap Mine is one of the many "ghost mines" of Idaho.

Well, they're home again, most of them, thank goodness. Seems like they got as far as Whisky Jack Gulch up in the Frank Church Wilderness, lost their compass, and found out that Scours has "misappropriated" the map. They argued for a while, from what I've been told, and then retired to the former town of Goldenend for a visit to the liquor cache.

As you probably know, Goldenend was the only town in the US that was populated only by good-time girls, hence its name. When the mines ran out and the town broke up back in 1897, they buried their leftover liquor ("cached" it) and the location is one of the State's best-kept secrets. Only those with a need to know, like the Legion, are allowed to know.

Anyway, the liquoring-up led to various shenanigans and fights, and the next day those who could ride drifted back. There are still a few missing in action (so to speak), but since their horses have returned without them we just assume that they're afoot. (You ever try to walk any distance in cowboy boots? They'll be a while returning.)

There are the usual black eyes, contusions, bruises, cuts, hangovers, knife wounds, powder burns and broken bones, but all in all they're in pretty good shape.

As for the insult to Bruce, they've decided to sent a "strong note" to the Canadian Government, urging them to declare war on "where ever in Hell that Raedwulf feller is at." This will be posted as soon as they raise the money for stamps.

Thank you, Ranger1. I was happy when it was done, and one or two of the songs still appeal to me, but I find the stuff I'm writing now to be better quality, more expressive and matured. My voice isn't what it was--not that it was ever all that good. But the truth is that all I ever wanted to be is a songwriter. The course of my life made that dream impossible for one reason or another. However, I have been writing a fair amount lately, and I honestly think my last two are ten times better than anything I've done before. I'm in love with the newest melody I'm working on (may have something to do with open E tuning) and the words to a song I completed a few months ago make my other writing--with maybe the exception of Fool Like Me--pale in comparison. (Sorry to go on so.) Two others I have 'in progress' are good--but they lack what I call the magic quality. I have been very encouraged by the response of so many people on this and the other thread. It has been helpful to me in deciding to do another CD, God willin', and to get back to writing for whatever time the universe allows me. As to the 'modesty thing', I have never been all that good at accepting compliments--they embarrass me. It is a skill I wish I had, but don't.

Thank you for YOUR kind words, and don't get POed because I said that. I do know that if the latest song--still unfinished but coming close to being finished--gets in the hands of someone who has decent distribution available, it will hit the top 20 in the soft rock charts. (Now, that's just a bit immodest dontcha think? Sonuvagun, I am as excited as I ever get about a song. Now, I will shut up about it. BUT, it's really really good. LOL. Really!) It's a love song with a super melody--very catchy and easy to sing. It ain't the greatest song I ever heard, but it is the best I ever wrote. Good words, GREAT melody and neat, slow rhythm in 4/4 time. My fingers are getting back in shape and slowly so is my voice. The words and melody work together, and that's what's taking so long. I was never a fast writer, and considering I'm 'starting' again, it's coming apace.

Thank all of you for your kind words, encouragement and support. You will never know how much this has meant to me. I am back writing again because of people on this site, and it's one of the two best creative feelings I have had in over 30 years, the other being some short story efforts that are still underway. Merci bien beaucoup.

Horrible thing happened here and I don't quite know what the international repercussions will be.

I was down at The Big Bull Bar and Internet Grill and borrowed one of their Apple IIe's to check some out the 700 Club website, pick up some apple pie recipes and stuff. Loansome Harry drifted over, preceeded as usual by his personal miasma (which is one of the reasons why he's called Loansome, the other being his chronic indebtedness), took a sip from my coffee (the BBB&IG sells coffee and don't ask for a latte or cappuchino or, God help you!, so-called gourmet coffee), glanced over my shoulder, and saw this thread title.

He let out a screech like he'd gotten certain parts of his anatomy caught between his body and the saddle again and ran out the door shouting the assembly call of the Idaho Legion ("They're Outa Beer!").

Knowing the Legion I finished my coffee, had a piece of Hazel's pie, and ambled out to the Legion's armoury-cum-stable. To my surprise they were formed up in good order and ready to ride north. (That's not a picture of the Legion, but of some horse artillery unit from England. But the Legion uniforms and things are identical, except in camouflage.)

Loansome shouted to me to get ready, they were riding north to avenge the insult to Bruce Murdoch by Raedwulf.

I told him that I didn't think Raedwulf was IN Canada, but he wouldn't listen. The troop moved out and I can only hope that they were distracted by Gert's Eat Here And Get Get Gas Grill and Bar in Shoup.    Otherwise, if they make it to the Alberta border there's gonna be one nasty international incident. I mean, the US has invaded Canada before, but not recently.

Of course, they'll be turned back at the border. I hope they'll be turned back at the border. Please God let them be turned back at the border. 'Cuz if they aren't turned back at the border they're gonna see one of those "Drink Canada Dry" signs and try to do just that.

Yes, Flipper from the movies and television series was, in fact, a dolphin. But I wasn't talking about that Flipper. I was talking about "Flipper, The World's Smartest Amberjack". Everybody knows about Flipper the dolphin because he was dumb enough to get caught by humans and then learned a bunch of stupid tricks in hopes that they'd think he was really smart and go "Aw! He's too smart to be kept in a swimming pool! Let's let him go." But Flipper the amberjack was smart enough to totally avoid human contact altogether. So, while he's not very widely known by humans, the other fish all think he's tops. Just ask the next tuna you happen to see.

I also was amused by Bruce's "no value" declaration on the CD mailer. He obviously meant "no cash value". There's a difference. But whattaya expect from a guy who once infested the entire unmarried population of Jacksonville, Florida with the most virulent strain of crab lice ever known to humankind? I mean this is a guy who thinks the proper name for a spatula is a "flipper", when everyone knows Flipper is a really big smart fish. Cut the boy some slack, okay? It's a damned good CD for a guy with so few working brain cells! And, hey, guys named "Bruce" is always cool.

There's already a thread extoling the virtues of this CD... maybe someone can cross link this one to it, and lock this?

It doesn't surprise me, Amos, but I'm here so infrequently these days, mea culpa, I'm useless AND absent, instead of... Can I have a couple of weeks to forget to think about this?!

I begged, I grovelled, I pled (OK, I just asked, & he not only said "delighted", he refused payment, but why let the truth get in the way of a good story? The Sun didn't. Fox didn't. His Murdoch-namesake never did... Right... Now, where was I? Oh, yeah..)

I begged, I grovelled, I pled... He showed no mercy, cruel to the core, he did exactly what I... ummmm... asked him to... (This isn't working...)

Did he listen to my pleas (Ummm... Yes...), "don't, please don't, no I couldn't bear... (being deprived of a copy of...)" Ha! He sent me a CD anyway, just as I *drat* asked him to. (Look, who wrote this script? I'm gonna kill 'im, 'e's got it all wrong, where's the drama, eksetera? Pillock!)

"Oh, it's only a CD copy of a very old record", says Bruce "peace on you" Murdoch.

Do you know what he did?

Do you know what that f*&^%$£ bastard did???? (I'm never going to forgive him, NEVER!!)

He wrote Music CD, No Value on the envelope!!!!!

Yeah, like... If he tells you the sky is blue, the grass is green, & the world is round, don't believe him!!! He is a monumental liar! He cannot be trusted!!! Ek setera, ek thingy, ekky thump...

All of which is my of saying publicly (since no-one else seems to have done..) bloody excellent CD, Bruce! And though you refuse payment, you still can't stop me donating to MC on your behalf! (Yes, I fight dirty. What else can you do with an Antipodean... Ooooops! I mean, Yank... damn... Canuck...)
