Subject: Review: WHAP! music/poetry show in Frederick, MD From: GUEST,Jim Wagner (Shortbread) Date: 26 Aug 05 - 08:48 PM There is a new music/poetry show called WHAP! (a Weekly Happening with Audience Participation)in Frederick, Maryland. WHAP! features 15-20 minute sets by usually 6-8 performers per show. Every act doing a complete set of material receives a share of the tip money. Additionally (the 'audience participation' part of it) performers receive feedback on their material via anonymous audience comment cards. In the words of a recent participant it's "like 'American Idol' without the humiliation". WHAP! happens at three venues on different evenings in Frederick: Sundays 7-9 at the Friends Meetinghouse (723 N. Market Street), Mondays 6:30-8:30 at Jennifer's Restaurant (207 W. Patrick Street), and Thursdays 7-9 at the Mudd Puddle (124 S. Carroll Street). Contact Shortbread at 301-682-4836 or rengawpj@hotmail.com if you are interested in performing and/or for more information. Peace to you, Jim Wagner (Shortbread) |

Subject: RE: Review: WHAP! music/poetry show in Frederick, From: CarolC Date: 26 Aug 05 - 09:12 PM Hi Jim. I don't live in your area any more (I used to live in Shepherdstown, WV). But I wanted to ask if you are familiar with The Morning Star Consort (Sharon Hall, Jeff Esko, and their bassist whose name I have trouble remembering). Jeff lives there in Frederick. They're friends of mine, are very good (Celtic/jazz/oldtimey fusion), and when I still lived in your neck O' the woods, they were regularly performing in and around Frederick. You might want to see if you can get them over to your show. Also the bunch from O'Hurley's General store in Shepherdstown. They sometimes perform in other venues besides O'Hurley's great hall. You might want to make it to one of the regular Thursday night jam session at O'Hurley's to spread the word over there. Lots of very fine musicians have been found at those jam sessions over the years. Also The Martin Family, Jeannine (sp?), Carl, and various offspring. The O'Hurley's bunch can put you in touch with them. I believe they live in Mt. Airy. Alternatively, you could join the Mudcat, which would enable you to contact the Mudcatter who goes by the screen name of Claymore by PM (private message). He lives in Shepherdstown, is very involved with the music scene around the panhandle and the Frederick area, and he can help you put the word out about your show. ...unless you already knew all of this stuff, in which case, never mind. ;-) Good luck with it! |
