I can remember an old 78 RPM record that we had over 60 years ago. As I can remember, the words to the song went something like this:

Poor old Rover, his roving days are over.
He can hardly get around, oh the poor old hound.
He followed me, so faithfully.

There's a spot on the hill, that is peaceful and still.
Where I will place a slab of stone.
Up the Hill, we've got to go.
But old Rover don't know, that I'll be coming back all alone.
Poor old Rover, come on let's get it over.
Then I'll kneel and say a prayer, let us meet up there.
Rest peacefully, Old Rover.

I believe I have a copy of this record that I inherited fromm my Dad.

I am reminded of a song I once heard on a campsite at Cambridge Folk Festival, with the words:

Bing Crosby recorded a song called POOR OLD ROVER in 1939. Authorship is credited to "Johnson/Porter." Couldn't find any lyrics, though.

Joe--THANK YOU for directing me to Kentucky Babe and thus to the Levy collection! There I found a number of the songs my dad sang-all the words and the music, too! I felt like today was Christmas, as I "opened" up song after song, along with many sweet memories! Thanks again for your help! Roro

Hi, Roro - We flood this forum with so many song lyrics that the Digital Tradition editor aren't able to get them all into the database right away - so it's a good idea to search the forum, using the search link on the forum menu. Sometimes the forum search can be slow, since all these forum messages we post make up a huge database.
I found Kentucky Babe (click here). Keep checking this thread. I'll bet that within a couple of days, somew old pro like Dale Rose or Gene Graham will come up with the real "Rover" song for you. I didn't think the Smothers Brothers song was the one you wanted.

Joe--maybe I am doing something wrong--I did check the databae and forum first and nothing came up. I looked for "Kentucky Babe",too, and got nothing. I was sure it would be in there."Old Shep" was the song I was looking for-thank you-but 'Rover" by the Smothers Brothers was not. The one I am looking for says "There's a spot upon the hill....something something...but Rover doesn't know, that I'll be comin' home all alone..". I am trying to put toghether a scrapbook for my siblings of the songs my dad sang when we were little. Thank you for this great site! -Roro-
