Singers' room well looked after this year again thanks to Lady A, aided by you and Kenneth and Rob etc

Dave from Newcastle in fine form, and Edna Baggaley, big Ron and little Ron (whistling Ronnie) in good form. Are Sid Caldebank and little Ron twins separated at birth ~ one growing up in Lancashire and t'other in Newcastle ~ both difficult to understand but fine company.

Others need mentioning, Maggie and Stephen from Denby Dale, Herga Kitty, Derek, boozy Booker ~ iced 'midget' gems, the Chair lift project(aka Jim's slush fund)I was asked if the Chair lift was going ahead on Friday!!

Stushie is a scottish dialect word meaning a fight or argument. In previous years the Tap singaround has been the subject of complaints from the 'precious ones' It's quite nice this year not to hear from them. I for one had a 'double fantastic' time as usual and yes Padge there were many magic moments.

First chance to sit and have a look on mudcat since folk week - yes it is nice that there have been no anti tap and spile messages this year but unfortunately there has been a much more important occurance this year and that was the loss of the plough as a venue - it has been the hub of folk week for so many years and was a great loss to many people - this year was certainly very sad for a lot of people not least of all Gill and Denise who have put so much into previous folk weeks. There was a lot of displaced people who over the course of the week looked for and hopefully found a place to sit and sing or play and who although not in their regular venue did get pleasure from the week and will return again next year!
To all who came to the tap thank you for your company and we hope that like many of our regular "folkies" you enjoyed your stay and will call in and see us next time round!

Well I complained last year, and I think I'm far from precious.

My wife left the T&S last year in tears because the attitude of the people in the Side-Room was so cliquey that they wouldn't even make eye contact with us, let alone talk to us.
I have had it explained to me since that it was a get-together of various people who knew each other, but to me it was a singaround in a pub (and not marked private). It was all I could do to leave the place without slapping someone.

I love the T & S, Derek and Co. are always welcoming and good humoured, and I am more than prepared to just sit and listen as well a join in where appropriate. So it's not the T & S at fault.

So maybe there is no dissing the T&S sessions this year because those same 'precious ones' feel unwelcome and won't go there during WFW.

I am sorry that this has degenerated, I can only say that it is very difficult to run singarounds I have had years running the T & S with Booker and now Jude does an excellent job virtually on her own

No one is missed intentionally and you can sit there 2 hrs to get a song. Its a long time

How anyone can say that Jim, doesnt make people welcome is beyond me, hes too busy fetching the beer mostly

OK, with some of the other testimonials I will keep an open mind as to WFW in the T&S.
Guess we were just unlucky, or misinterpreted a situation where we were simply not noticed.

However; MC Fats, my wife's opinion was that folk singing should be accessible to all people, regardless of talent, if it is to continue, much less expand. She was upset that the people who were in the T&S side room (busily making themselves nametags - which stated "exclusive singaround") staunchly believed that exclusivity, to the point of folk's extinction, if necessary, was preferable to a perceived dilution of their considerable talent. If you are happy with that, then fine. I would feel pretty crappy if I had that attitude.

The name tags were first made last year as a joke in response to all the flak that the T&S had received then. The option is quite clear, if the T&S does not suit your requirements there are plenty of other venues available. I rarely go to the T&S prefering the Black Horse or The Plough when it was available but that again is my choice. The boys and girls who frequent the T&S have done so in the main for some years and obviously will have a few in jokes which newcomers may not comprehend and have "rules" which they all understand and adhere to. May I suggest you use another venue and may I then suggest that the best session of the week is the Sunday Lunchtime trip to Glaisdale, come and join us.

I believe what we were trying was an attempt at a type of humour which is called 'irony'. It's the others who call us exclusive and if that really was the case how come people like Lynn and Pat just wandered into this 'exclusive club'. They came along 'unknown' and sang their hearts out.
Yeah I know I started this thread but I'll maybe finish by re-iterating the following. The T & S room is a small room, it is not designed for those who want to dip in sing their song and then dip out to sing that same song at another pub. The door is kept closed in order to have order, so that the room doen't get uncomfortable the management post either a member of staff or even the landlady herself.
In the main the people who arrive at 8 stay there till closing time so the landlady looks after those people who spend time (and money) in her pub. It has welcomed many new singers over the years and will continue to do so in the future. Just like a television has an on/off switch the following applies IF YOU DON'T LIKE THAT TYPE OF SESSION DON'T WHINGE ABOUT IT AND TRY TO CHANGE IT INTO SOMETHING IT CAN'T BE BUGGER OFF TO A SESSION THAT SUITS YOUR NEEDS AND LEAVE US IN PEACE

Believe the singaround has moved over the years but it was at the Duke of York for a time as for 'very cliqey' wouldn't know what you mean apart from Barnsley Boys would have to come from Barnsley I suppose so does that mean that only they sung ? Now my definition of a 'clique' is a gathering that excludes others and I don't consider 52 songs in one evening with no singers singing more than one song 'exclusive'.
