Quebecois recordings recommendations?

I've fallen in love with this stuff, but have very little knowldege of who's who. Any recommendations of folks to seek out and listen to? I'm particularly interested in fiddle/accordian stuff from which I can learn more tunes and get more of a feel for the music.

Also, any sense of festivals/sessions? I'm in Vermont, so Quebec is certainly manageable. There seems to be surprisingly little playing here, given the French Canadian population. If I'm missing it here at home, please correct me.

Susan, we've got a classic example, in that it is an old LP. Don't know if these folks are around anymore or not, but it's called "Roger Gendron et Fils Vol.2: Reels, Valses - Gigues" and is on the Bonanza folklore label number B-29717.

being French-Canadian, first generation American, my Rog used to have tons of these, but we gave them all to a homesick elderly friend years ago. Still love the music, though!

Two very fine groups that I have heard recently are Entourloupe, www.entourloupe.vizou.com and Genticorum, www.genticorum.com. (I tried making blue clickies, but without success. The instructions say to "cut and paste this into your post", but that didn't result in a blue clickie.)

If you are really keen on learning some Quebecois tunes, why not come to the Goderich Celtic College next summer? The folks from Genticorum were teaching this year, and Entourloupe last year.

Any recording by fiddler Jean Carignan. Isidore Soucy, another fiddler, recorded for RCA Canada in the (I think) 1940s and 1950s. I used to buy his and other Quebecois records at Beaupre's Pharmacy in Woonsocket RI when I worked there in the 60s. Louis Beaudoin is (was?) a French Canadain fiddler who lives/d in Vermont and recorded for Philo, also in Vermont, back in the day.
The Northeast Old Time Fiddlers' gathering used to take place in Barre VT the first weekend in October. Excellent place to hear Quebecois music, if it still happens.

I still enjoy playing my 1982 LP of ERITAGE (from Ontario??): "La Ronde des Voyageurs" (produced by Stan Rogers) ...

   There is an annual accordion festival in Montmagny, Quebec, on Labor Day weekend: Carrefour Mondial de l'accordeon (tr. accordion world crossroads) de Montmagny. I'm a fiddler myself, but the music is so closely linked. Several years ago, I was passing through Montmagny, and stopped at the accordian shop of Marcel Messervier ( I was familiar with some of his compositions for fiddle). When I approached him to autograph my Portland Collection tunebook, he and his son entertained me with an impromptu concert that was one of the high points of my Canada trip. This is how I learned of the festival, which I understand Marcel has been "instrumental" in organizing.
    I also would like to recommend a Mel Bay book, "Danse Ce Soir", fiddle and accordion music of Quebec, which has a CD available.
    Hope this is helpful. I'll probably be in New England next summer, and would like to meet some fiddlers. Any suggestions on festivals/gatherings in August?

Check out the CD "Le miroir d'argent: Tresors puises aux Archives de folklore de l'Universite Laval 1944-1994" (catalogue number CVPV 1390). It consists of very listenable field recordings from Quebec and Acadie--songs, fiddle tunes, mouth music, accordion, harmonica, jaw harp--and includes a good booklet with all the lyrics.
Also, I don't think La Bolduc has been mentioned in this thread yet ("La Bolduc: Les grands succes" Les Disques Merite 22-1089). She was very popular from the 30s to the 50s. Her songs resemble one another, being funny or satirical reels with mouth music (la turlutte) and harmonica breaks between the verses. It's difficult to listen to a whole album at once but you can see how in the days of the 78 rpm record each new La Bolduc release would have been eagerly anticipated. Incidentally, when I first got these two CDs, I googled "turlutte", a term I had never encountered before. Much to my surprise, I got thousands of hits, several of which referred to French Canadian folk music. The rest of the sites were based in France, where the word for "mouth music" has rather different connotations.

Thank you folks. I have been in some transition with housing/computers/etc. and haven't had a chance to look at this until today, but it looks great. Can't wait to get to that mp3 site.

Winnie,The Cmamplain Valley Festival is a good one, usually the first weekend in August at Kingsland Bay park on Lake Champlain, kind of between shelburne and Vergennex vT. Personal message me when you head this way. I'm part of a pretty nifty jam session, and hopefully will keep finding new stuff myself.

Check out a new CD of an older fiddle player, called "Edouard Richard: Musique Gaspesienne." His playing is very rhythmic and exciting.
on the latest "Celtic Fiddle festival CD," the late and very lamented Johnny cuningham is replaced by an exciting young Quebecois fiddler, Andre Brunet. I got back last week from a fiddle camp in California where he was teaching. He is just amazing, a true master. He plays with the band La Bottine Souriante....and speaking of the band, their third recording, "Chic and swell," is worth a listen or a hundred.

Susan A-R, just like you I found it very easy to fall in love with french-canadian music (and even easier to fall in love with a certain french-canadian woman...), but my experiences are also limited (owed to the fact, that she is not into that kind of music), but nevertheless:

Another one of my favourites is called "2worlds united", a collaboration of Canadian fiddler Pierre Schryer and Dermot Byrne of Ireland (box-player of Altan) - www.pierreschryer.com -
When I went over to Montreal we heard a concert by La vent du Nord and another - in my mind even better band sadly without cd - named Marigne or so; there was a thread about La vent du Nord some time ago, check it out for more info.
And then there is of course La Bottine de Souriante (with horn section on the cd I got)....
