Doesn't he tend to play in an open D tuning ? I checked his instructional tape at Homespun Tapes and that song doesn't seem to be on it. Good luck.

Richie Havens
[PB] reports that Richie Havens primarily uses Open D, sometimes tuning the F# down to F to get an open D minor. Sometimes he tunes the 1st string down to a C to get an open major or minor dominant seventh.

He also plays the guitar in an idiosyncratic and powerful fashion, positioning it something like a dulcimer and wrapping his large thumb around the neck to bar the bass strings. His path to discovery of this style, which is wholly self-taught, is documented in his autobiography, which by the way also includes some very complimentary descriptions of the early career of a certain highly talented Canadian singer-songwriter. The book is named after his famous opening remark at Woodstock where he by strange synchronicity had no choice but to open the show: "They Can't Hide Us Anymore".

Aw, c'mon, Amos, don't be so coy. Which highly talented Canadian singer-songwriter? Paul Anka? Murray McLauchlin? Billy Cowsill? Yeah, it's gotta be Billy Cowsill. "I love the flower girl..."

Aloha,
Mark

http://www.richiehavens.com

Is a great site & Ritchie gives you his open tuning + all the chords he uses + tab for some of his popular songs.

There is also an instructional tape/video produced by Homespun. He talks to Happy Traum & demonstrates his technique. Be warned we lesser mortals would need a thumb extension to play exactly the way he does.

Unfortunately 'Follow' which I think is an amazing song isn't included in the video or on the website. I've searched the www a couple of times & only found the lyrics. I havn't put my mind to working out some acceptable chords but it doesn't sound impossibly difficult.

How about asking Ritchie. Maybe to the E mail contact on the website? I have seen him live & few times over the years & managed to exchange a couple of words after I saw him play the London Jazz Cafe earlier in the year.He comes over as such a warm & open guy I'm sure he will you if he has time.
