The first Zionist congress opens at Basel on 8/31/1897. Theodor Herzl arouses support for a Jewish homeland. Herzl will obtain an appointment with the Ottoman sultan, Abdul Hamid and although he has scant financial backing will offer to buy up the Turkish national debt in exchange for Jewish rights in Palestine. Palestine has been a sub-province of the Ottoman Empire since the early 1500's.

Lech, lech la-mid-bar, ha-d'ra-chim yo-vi-lu.      (Come, don't hesitate, the wilderness is calling!)
Lai-yil te-rem ba, lech achi el ha-mid-bar.          (Don't wait, don't delay; There's no time for stalling!)
        Shuv, shuv na-cha-zor, ha-tsu-kim ya-ri-u;         (Sun's hot, water's scarce, Nights are drear and lonely;
She-mesh g'do-la shel or, od tiz-rach a-le-nu.    (But we are needed there; Let's rebuild it boldly!)
La-mid-bar, e-rets lo ma-yim,                           (Desert land, wasted and battered)
Hoy! at ad-ma-ti, shav-nu e-la-yi                      (It's the promised land for those ingathered!)

"Lech Lamidbar" (Come, Don't Hesitate) by A. Argov; English by H. Coopersmith.

25 years ago today, the Polish Solidarnosz was officially acknowledged by the communist government of Poland. The workers' fight for an independent union had been won. Walesa signed with a pen so big that everyone could see in TV the photo of the Pope on the pen.

Angelic Upstarts
Solidarity

all the polish workers fight to make their stand
and behind them evry honest working men
in unity there`s each otherand your friend becomes your brother
and in the tyrant`s heart will be a lesson learned

give them hope give them strength give them live
like a candle burning in the black of night
we`re all with you in our hearts and in our minds
and we`ll pray for our nation through its darkest times

the tyrant has no smile upon his face
cause he knows that in his minds he`s in
disgrace
remission of you will take his breath away
until we come and we will have our day

give them hope give them strength give them live
like a candle burning in the black of night
we`re all with you in our hearts and in our minds
and we`ll pray for our nation through its darkest times

as the polish workers fight to make their stand
and behind them evry honest working men
join hand with your brother and then you can help each other
watch the tyrant burn in the fire that he had built.

Wolfgang
