This new CD will be out by the end of September. This grew out of a workshop at Rainy Camp, a weekend singing retreat of the Seattle Song Circle at Camp Don Bosco in Carnation, WA, Feb. 4 - 6, 2005. Most of the songs were recorded live in the camp chapel, others were recorded later or taken from previous recordings. Some of these songs are traditional, others are newer songs written in the traditional style. Some have never been recorded before. They all represent a part of the ongoing folklore of the Pacific Northwest.

What a great collection! Lots of wonderful songs, and some great old Seattle Song Circle names, like John Dwyer, Susy McAleer, Mary Garvey, as well as Mariide and Bellingham's Linda Allen. So how come you guys left out the "Apple Maggot Quarantine Round"? Hmmmm?

It's a great compilation of regional folk songs sung by friends and members of the Seattle Song Circle. Many of these songs have never before been recorded, but they form a part of the ongoing folklore of the Pacific Northwest.

Just in case you folks don't know it, Stu has put hours and hours and hours into this CD. Worse than the time he spent recording everyone and editing and writing and producing everything, he also had to spend countless hours around the dregs of Northwest society! That alone deserves some kind of a merit badge.

I received my CD in the mail and it's a splendid collection. I listened to it all the way through once on my weekly trek to Portland-East for Roll & Go rehearsal. I really need to sit down with your notes in hand and listen to it more carefully before commenting on individual songs.

I received the CD today, and I've already listened to it twice. As a Pacific Northwest exile in California, I enjoyed every single song. One of these years I must make my annual visit coincide with Sunny Camp or Rainy Camp. In the meantime, I will wear out this CD. I especially enjoy the Ode to Puget Sound; Washington place names are a particular favorite of mine.   Thanks, Stew!

Charlie - Yes, I sang it at song circle last Sunday and it certainly had that effect. It was written by David Spalding in Edmonton, Alberta "at the height of the jogging craze, when people were really padding off into the snowy night, though not perhaps at forty-five below." Somehow the song migrated to Vancouver where the late John Dwyer heard it and added the last five verses to turn it into a broken-token song. It's been mentioned on the Mudcat several times in the past, but no one knew the words. It took me a few years to track it down from its source. But those of you less fortunate not having the CD will now have to buy it to get this gem.

I've listened to this CD enough times now to be able to form an opinion ... kind of a rare event in my life!

You've really done a remarkable CD here. You've captured the spirit of the songs, everywhere from the group singing that happened to the individual performances that were recorded later. It's a very interesting blend. And as you have mentioned, this CD really does speak to the vast amount and variety of music that continues to happen daily here in the Pacific Northwest. This is a very rich area. And as your CD demonstrates, the interest and talent of the "locals" is what drives it.

Phil Thomas' book of the same title (SPNW) has been out of print for lo these many years, but a new edition is in the works. We were hoping to get it out by Xmas but it's not going to happen, and the spring looks like a better time. There are a dozen new songs in it, including a whole new section on the Canadian Armed Forces, and the layout is vastly improved. I'll keep Mudcat posted on its progress through the press.

man carnation is such a butthole city. it's in my area. i got a CD from their library once. something like 'artists of the snoqualmie valley' or something. the first song is about how great the valley is and it's only cool because it's so utterly retarded and funny/ironic to listen to. the rest of the songs blow balls.

Talk about fun.

I have been working 60+-hour weeks for a month now, and have been getting near the point where I don't give a fig about the overtime. So tonight even though I was the shift supervisor of a shift that ran till eight, I left the remains of it in the hands of a very new trainee and took a cab at 6:45 from Eastlake to Phinney Ridge (a $15 ride, for those unfamiliar with Seattle terrain or who want to know just how badly I wanted to attend this thing) and then afterwards took another cab back to make sure the office hadn't imploded.

They even sang Seattle, the Peerless City, the official Seattle song! (Definitely not going to win any Grammys or anything, this one, but I am the one who resurrected it so I suppose I'd better take the credit with the blame that's due.)

I bought 3 copies of the CD as well as two of Linda Allen's and her two books. Total of $80, so with the cabs and admission the evening came to about $138, surely the most I've ever spent on a night of folk music. Well worth it, I'd say.

And Stewart..I stopped in Westlake Mall today and talked to the buyer at Made in Washington and the oner of the Pacific Northwest Store whatever it is called...both are interested in hearing your CD's...maybe you could give them loaners with a pre-addressed envelope to mail back a copy if they are not interested...I think there would be some visitor interest in these...I should have the exact information..let me grab my purse..

It's usually best when offering samples to simply offer the item as a keeper to the owner. Perhaps you'll get lucky and they'll play it in the store and have a response that encourages them to buy it. At any rate, part of selling the item includes having some to give away. If a ringer or two happens through to inquire about such an item in these shops, well, that's the nature of selling, isn't it? :) But these sound like excellent places to sell it.

I'd also check with area museums, and most certainly someone should speak with the National Park Service folks down in Pioneer Square. They're usually on the lookout for good quality items to sell in their gift shops. They will work through an organization that does the purchasing and the paperwork (in the past I've worked at parks covered the the Southwest Parks and Monuments Association and the Eastern National Parks Association). I don't remember what the Northwest group is, but I'm certain one exists. The Forest Service sells their stuff also. Check around, and once you find that group, they may place the CD in several parks or forests. If there's a book to go with it, all the better.

I jumped in at the end of this thread, so pardon me if all of this was said before somewhere in the middle. Good luck with the sales!

Proofreading always helps. I was talking about parks covered by this kind of nonprofit organization. It looks like in this case it is the Northwest Interpretive Association. They're a cooperating association and here is more information about that. They put their profits back into projects in the parks, into grants to promote the production of products to sell (books, albums, art, etc.) and they often times pay the salary of a sales clerk in the park.
