Following on from last year's very successful MudGather at Banbury, Merek'n'Dary have come up trumps once again and programmed a MudGather (in the program as the MudCat Cafe) into the Banbury Festival again this year.

Beginning at 3pm (ish) on the Saturday, I'll be starting it off at a completely new venue for the Festival, the Town & Country Club in the High St after the Big Sing led by John Morris. This new venue is Fabulous and we have our very own bar. The Very Good News is that I understand that there will be some very Suitable Real Ale on offer :-)

As always, the Gather will be open to all MudCatters, MudFriends (and the Curious) alike and will probably be a mixture of meeting, singing, playing and Eating Chocolate! If we have enough interest here and people can bring appropriate prizes it would be good to run a MudRaffle too, with all proceeds being sent in to Max for the MudCat.

As we're 'clashing' with the Getaway this year, some of the usual suspects will be noticeably absent, but that just means that there'll be more chocolate to share around!! I'll be looking for other 'Hosts' to help run the Gather & I hope that we'll be able to organise it so that we can get more Musicians involved this year!

So, what do Catters think, and who's coming?

I may be able to offer and hour of my time if you want a break too.....

Suitable Real Ale is wonderful for those who drink ale....what about some Suitable Real Cider????? Something noticeably lacking in most pubs.

So good to hear the Gather's programmed and on.
Only last week did I find out that I'm not "engaged" for the festival itself this year. So that leaves me free to attend the Gather - whoopee! But, like Morticia and Lynne, I'd been having probs sorting out accommodation, so I'm not sure whether I'll be able to come down for just the day or any part of the weekend. If so, then I'd gladly volunteer to host an hour or whatever.....

Although, I think we're stewarding to try and cut the costs slightly, Banbury will be our 4th festival in as many weekends, so forgive us if we're slightly out of sorts!

The Banbury flyer says single event tickets can be bought on the door only, if available. I don't know if you'll need a ticket to get into the new venue (last year the Mudgather was in a pub), but I don't think you'll need a day or weekend season.

Oh dear.
If the Mudgather is going to be a "Sit around and listen to guitarists" affair, then I might give it a miss.
I am aware that singers have dominated the gathers in past years, and maybe 'times they are a-changing' but good voices-only and acapella singarounds are few and far between.

Is it possible that we might be able to spread to 2 venues? One 'inna folk-club stylee' with performing spots (venue) and another less formal (maybe pub) voices-only gig? Or alternate on a timeshare basis?

I understand that I am showing myself up as a voice-nazi but I have my reasons - Aside from the fact that I wouldn't inflict my guitar/whistle/concertina on anyone not wearing ear-defenders :-)

It would seem to me, that divisive formats which would exclude those who customarily use guitars etc. for accompaniment are the antithesis of what a mudgather should be.

Any such would automatically remiove the event from my "Must Go" list.

I was unaware that Mudcat was a place only for those purists who sing acapella, or play only tunes.

The song only format works at the middle bar in Sidmouth, largely because there is also a wealth of oportunity at other venues for the singer/players, but it does reduce the chances of meeting other Catters. Mudgathers IMHO should be bridging, not maintaining, that gap.

Hey CamoJohn, don't panic!!!

There's plenty of time programmed within the Gather to be able to please all Catters. (Did anyone notice that we've have probably got the venue till 11pm?) We could easily sort some loose timings out for performers slots if Catters would like that & pop them on this thread so that Catters could make their own decisions.

Personally I'm all for Catters getting a chance to perform for say 20-30 minutes if they'd like to!

I'd also like to encourage more musicians to come along. I certainly wouldn't want to be exclusive although last year there seemed to be mostly singers.

If other mudgathers are anything to go by, John, it all works out pretty amicably between un/accompanied songs and tunes.....and if it had been only singers at Bedworth, we would have missed EPN's turn on his horn......and believe me, no-one would want to miss that!!

Although I'm another hardline unaccompanied singer, I do not think the Mudgather should cater purely for us.

I'm not really comfortable with 20-30 minute spots: I prefer the way it goes round the room, but when it's your turn you should feel comfortable to be able to sing (solo or chorus), dance, recite a poem, tell a story, play a solo tune, lead a session tune, perform a mummers play, distribute chocolate-covered celery, or contribute to the bonhomie in any other way you wish.

At last year's Gather in Banbury we had several superb singers who accompanied themselves, such as Les Sullivan and our very own El Greko: I wish we'd had more. There were also squeezy, bangy and blowy things, so there was also the occasional tune.

I think the unbalanced mix last year was perhaps due to there being a programmed tune session elsewhere at the same time, but no programmed singaround: the singers took the chance to combine both singing and catting; the musos maybe thought it was an either/or situation.

As you're considering format etc., can I make a suggestion?

To me, the most enjoyable thing about mudgathers has been the chance not merely to perform- you can do that in many singarounds/pubs/beer tents- but to meet new friends with whom to share your music.

As more catters meet regularly at mudgathers, get to know each other well, share in-jokes and common topics of conversation, talking about other people they have in common, there is a risk of appearing to those who don't know others there, to be 'cliquey' and exclusive, which is far from being the case.

So, can we think of some way of 'meeting and greeting' when new gatherers arrive, in an informal and friendly way (not- "Who are you?")!

Despite knowing quite a few people at last years mudgather, I felt (during the short time I was there) that there was something missing, as people just went from one song to another without introduction of themselves or their mudcat name, and I didn't feel I knew any more about the people there after I left than when I arrived.

Perhaps if people introduce themselves before performing it would help to get a friendly atmosphere going?

This is not meant as a criticism of anyone but as a positive thought to make future mudgathers the wonderful experience I know they can be.

I prefer a relaxed session where both singing and instruments are welcomed, and personally I prefer one spot per person. I certainly don't want to do more than one at a time! And if it's someone you don't particularly want to listen to, 20 minutes is a long time!

I also agree with Noreen, perhaps some longish beer breaks between the singing/music so we can chat?

Why Morti - thankyou for those kind words! Mind you, at the time, I felt like missing my spot on the horn...

I think I prefer the concept of the relaxed informal session, with spots of one song/tune/poem/solo jig. As for the extended beer break... Last year's gather seemed to work well, where Catters could sit and natter in one bar, while the singaround/tunearound/general performance carried on in another was good for me!

One slight change (hot on the heels of saying that it would probably be 11pm finish) is that the finish has been renegotiated to 7.30ish, to bring another singing session into the venue (hooray)!!

As far as I know the MudGather is Not a Ticketed Event, we should b4e looking after ourselves. All the more reason for finding out who we all are methinks :-)

CamoJohn: Banned from the Reindeer! Hardly - that was a fabulous room but last year we had such an overspill that we've grown into a bigger (and more chocolaty) venue. The Reindeer has got all sorts of workshops programmed in there during the afternoon & Folk Club in the evenings.

IvanB: No need for a Festival ticket, though there's such a lot of Fab stuff going on that you might like to indulge if you're down for the day.

pixieofdoom: And just what does Jack think about being a raffle prize? I can't help thinking that there ought to be a law (& a Society) against that sort of thing!!!

But yes, Raffle prizes please - it should be a straightforward 'draw', but I can supply another complicated hieroglyph system if anyone fancies a laugh! Ticket purchasing not compulsory, but it helps!!

Oh, and don't forget the chocolate.....

Spoke to Merek and Dairy today. They are working their socks off for the festival. Too busy to enter the Mudcat which is a shame ,but I understand why. This festival will be brill. More venues,and Peformers of superb quality, This one wont get big and loose the plot like some others! I enjoed the Gather last year and will be there of course. Missed some good concerts in the process last year though :>{

Just been for a reccy to Banbury, the closest we could find to a "Town and Country Club" was "Cherwell COUNTY Club" opposite KFC on the High Street, hope this is the right place, the locals have never heard of a Town and Country club.

Sorry you had problems finding it Fran, it is a little 'tucked away'.   The entrance (a discreet doorway with a club sign above it) is definitely by the junction on the High St just before it starts to become one-way in George St. Not sure where the KFC is, is it in the one-way section?

I'll be posting more specific directions nearer the time, entry to the club is normally by buzzer but I'll let you know any particular arrangements for the festival as soon as I can.

duellingbouzoukis & moonunit: sorry you won't make the Gather, but just know you'll be having a great time! Guess this means El Greko won't be coming either *sigh*

Have discussed proper directions with the Club itself just now & can report as follows:

The front entrance to the club is signed as the Cherwell County Club, but the name is in the process of being changed to the Town & Country Club since being taken over by the new owners - mystery solved (we were both right Fran)!!

The front door is opposite the KFC on the High St, sandwiched between Stan James Bookmakers on it's left & the Britannia Bank on it's right. This entrance is on a buzzer entry system which could prove tricky for all festival-goers to use, so it has been arranged that the back door will be the Festival entrance, directions as follows:

Walk past the front door to the corner of High St and Marlborough Road. Turn left and continue past the building to a pair of metal gates at the entrance to the car park. With the building still on your left, the back door is the farthest one, beside the 2 car parking spaces that are allocated to the club - I don't think it'll be possible to use these spaces! This back door will be signed as the Event entrance & leads into the room where the Mudgather (and the Big Sing at lunchtime & Singaround in the evening) will be held.

This isn't actually as complicated as it may look - honest!!! Take a note of this in case the Cat goes down just when you need it!!!

By the way, bring some spare cash, in addition to the MudRaffle, I understand that the Official Festival Raffle may be visiting & we really want to support the Festival proper!!

We do not usually have time to get envolved with answering every thread because of the tremendous pressure of running the festival. However, it is great to see all of your interest and enthusiasm in coming to banbury! We look forward to seeing you all and hope, as in previous years, you have a great time sharing ALL music, both accompanied and unaccompanied, with us who are great lovers of both (that's why we do it).

Hope you find all the venues too !! There will be maps available at Festival Information in the Mill foyer to help.

Will be popping in at some stage to say hello, perchance to have a song, and share the occasion with you all - Have a good time

Oh. By the way we were confused about the name of the venue for the Mudgather too. On the sign above the door outside it says "The Town and County Club" and inside on the button you push for entrance, the "Town and Country". It is because the first name belonged to the previous owners - the conservative club. It is now under new management and they have overlooked changing the sign! It looks like it is a members only club but we can assure you it is not. It is a REAL pub with REAL ale which we have negotiated with the present owners to put on. Do not be put off. Dary and I recently went to a 50th party there, put on by friends of ours because we had reccomended it as a good venue and we had an absolutely fantastic time with a great local folk band playing. You'll love it.

Sounds like this new Venue has been well tried & tested, well done Merek!

Not wishing to leave our chocolate tradition to Fate this year (I won last year's tin in the Festival Raffle), one tin of Quality Street has been duly purchased and has been made ready for transit to the Gather. Double wrapped with clingfilm & sellotape, with a combination padlock & chain, high security fence & patrolling Alsations. Should be safe enough.....

Don't forget to rummage around for suitable (or unsuitable) prizes for the MudRaffle!!!

Can't wait! My first Mudgather. And my first Banbury.

BUT - I won't be there all the while cos we're dancing (Herbaceous Border that is) outside the Mill from 4-5 on the Saturday. Maybe a few catters could bear to drag themselves away from all the chocolate celery to come and dance or even play for us. (Alan and Sandy, I think that might be a bit of a hint!!)

Setting off tomorrow to get the caravan close to Banbury. Got my Uncle's funeral to go to on Friday afternoon in Bedford, so the logistics for Friday have been a bit crazy. But by hook or by crook I'll get sorted & calm before my part in the acoustic concert at 9.15pm. Hope to see a few Catters there, may need some 'propping up'!!!

lynne hi kate here you met me with james in towersey in the bar you could try the bed and breakfast its only about 5 minutes walk from the station dont no the name as james booked it thats where we are staying good luck ill bring divine chocolate to the mudgathering cu in the bar will attempt to find decent cider if possible as i dont want to drink ale unless i have to

Checked the place out and user freindly. Two handpumps session beer Hook Norton £2.20 and a stronger one to be becided upon at this time by Derek. I want Archers Golden!   Sorry Lynn only Bulmers Cider. However the boss will cater for all tastes ,alternative ciders can be provided if you phone your order in. Bottled only though via the fridge :>)

Bar at Town & Country Club Sorted. Real Ales - Hook Norton Best & London Pride. The rest as posted. (There will be signs telling everyone the way in as well!!!) If you do not like what is on offer, come along to "The Pegg Inn" at The Town Hall. We have Hook Norton Best £2.00 pint, Old Hooky £2.20 pint, a 4.9% medium cider £2.00 pint, red or white cider 150ml glass @ £1.50. Fill up your tankards ! (Maybe not with the wine) We also have soft drinks, tea & coffee, filled rolls & crisps - all at reasonable prices.

Thanks for thinking about cider guys, but you beer drinkers still don't really understand do you? Bottled cider isn't really worth bothering with, Bulmers what? And merek and dary, what type of medium cider? If you think of clear, fizzy ciders as being equivalent to clear fizzy lagers, then you may understand what I'm getting at. Now an Old Rosie or Thatchers......then we're getting into the REAL ciders

Well! That was my first Banbury and it was GORGEOUS! Loads of variety, great weather for wanderin' along the canal and some great sings, concerts and sessions. Lovely to see lots of Mudders about as well.

It seemed like quite a lot to me!! But I s'pose I shouldn't moan...unlike this year's Sidmouth, we didn't have to put the tent up in the pouring rain, nor crawl out at 4 am to retrieve our gazebo which was blowing around the camp site! Yes Sunday was lovely..pity we had to go home at lunch time! And for the middle of October....well, it couldn't really have been much better could it?

Got home a few hours ago & just got the laundry sorted etc. Will post more tomorrow, including MudList of at least 39 Catters present, plus a fair few Guests & Non-Catters, not to mention Catters who got to the Festival but didn't manage to get along to the Gather.

We were delighted, nay in hysterics, during the performance of the William Tell Overture which was the performance of Pat Spoons & her Amazing Spoons Orchestra. Fantastic!!

By the Way, we raised £83 for the MudCat via the MudRaffle - will be posting cheque off to bill\sables as soon as I settle. Thanks to all for coming along and a Big Thankyou to MBSLynne & ShadyLady for their help with hosting! Thanks to all Catters for buying tickets, bringing prizes, songs, chocolate, hugs & laughter!

Just got home this evening after "dropping off" to help a friend recovering from a carpel tunnel op' with her shopping and corkscrew.

My apologies for the chocolate covered green chillies - I hope you've recovered by now Jude.

Despite having to rise at sparrow-fart Sunday was lovely and....no stewarding unlike Saturday when a 6 and a half hour stint meant I missed most of the mudgather. Wandered along the canal and bought a bottle of Pear and Chilli conserve ready for the next wine, cheese and song session!
