Hi everyone,

If you are a Byrd Lover and Roger McGuinn fanatic, this thread is for you. I am a active musician who collects and plays a lot of material by both the band and Roger as a soloist. I live in Pensacola Florida and just moved from Connecticut. I would like to form a Byrds cover band as well as material by Stephen Stills,Burritto Brothers, etc. Please feel free to join and add things for all of us to explore. This can be interesting if we make it that way.

I really like the way you started this, Jim. Welcome to the Mudcat. Why don't you join?

Even though my tastes shifted to other things, I am still a huge fan of the music you describe. It really had a lot to do with forming who I am. I loved The Byrds, but my favorite was Buffalo Springfield.

I should have guessed that about you, Mick--I have to say that I'm in the same place--

One of my recent favorite CD's is Sweetheart of the Rodeo(which I listened to to death when it came out, some thirty five years ago), with bonus tracks that include Gram Parsons as the lead vocal--as you probably know, due to contractual conflicts, the Sweetheart Album featured Roger singing lead, though most of the songs were recorded with Gram as the lead--Roger imitated Gram's voice so well that even listening to them back to back, you can get confused--

Musically, the Byrds had more to do with what bands sound like today than just about anybody else--if you listen to the college "alternative" stations, a lot of the LoFi bands build their sound just the way the Byrds did--

Roger recorded with synthesizers first--and he dicovered Tom Petty--

This is right at the heart of some of my favorite music. The Byrds represent one of the most remarkable "family trees" in American music history.

In Clarence White alone, there is perhaps the single greatest influence in bluegrass guitar for a whole new generation of players. Perhaps the root of what became "newgrass". Rice, Grier, Nygaard and many others claim White as "most influencial".

David Crosby, in all his future endeavors, proved to be part of even broader musical influence with Stills, Nash, and Young.

One of the most enjoyable reads I've had this year was the Flatpicking Guitar magazine which featured Chris Hillman on the cover. The interview with Chris Hillman was one of the most intimate, insider interviews I've ever read, of someone who lived and created right in the heart of all of it.

Sorry I haven't checked in in a few days. I remember seeing the Byrds for the first time in 69' with Clarence White,Gene parsons and John York later to be replaced by Skip Batten. I had already followed the Byrds with Crosby and Hillman but the fusion of Country,Folk,Jazz, and rock blew me away.I had the chance to meet them in 70' at the Capitol theatre in NY, played on Clarences Telecaster with the bendable "b"string. What a great guy he was as well as a musician. Roger I met and got to know a little bit in the next few years and e-mail him from time to time. He signed my 12 String Rickenbacker.
Since I have moved to Pensacola Florida this summer, I'm trying to form a Byrds type band. I'm doing some solo work but i teach music in a school in Escambia County.I have a lot of Rogers songs with chords if anyone out there would like to print a copy. Just let me know and i will scan what you want and I could e-mail a copy of the lyrics with chords.I plan on keeping in touch. It's just been crazy getting moved in and acclimated to a new job.
