Subject: RE: County Mayo - What to see From: GUEST,Raggytash Date: 24 Oct 05 - 10:39 AM So the story. In 1832 4 brothers were given a contract by Mayo council to build a bridge at Bellacorrick, however they spent much money in the bar there and did not complete the bridge due to lack of funds. Threatened with transportation they did a flit with their mother rather than be transported to Van Diemans land, however before they left the Mother put a curse on the bridge should anyone finish the work. In the 1930's Mayo Council again set 4 men to work to complete the bridge and sent an inspector to view the completed bridge as he was driven away he suffered a fatal attack and died just a few yards away from the bridge, 3 of the 4 construction workers also died soon after and a son of the fourth also died. The fourth worker himself fell grievously ill. The locals got together and removed one capstone thus leaving the bridge unfinished, the fourth worker thereupon made a full recovery but to this day the bridge has never been completed. The Musical bit comes as follows, originally the capstones were not concreted down and made a hollow sound when struck with another stone most still do but some have been cemented into place and do not ring as they once did but it is still possible to create a musical sound by tapping on the capstones as you walk along. Great story, one which I will savour for a long time |
Subject: RE: County Mayo - What to see From: GUEST,Raggytash Date: 24 Oct 05 - 04:38 AM What as stunning place Mayo is, the place we stayed at Doohooma is on a flat plain surrounded by a mountain backdrop to two sides and the Atlantic on the other two. The hospitality we received was marvellous and two places in particular I would recommend to anyone, the Sea Rod Inn at Doohooma, many Thanks to Bernie & Michael and their family and the Musical Bridge Bar at Bellacorrick where Helen and the whole pub made us so welcome we felt like old friends just returned. There is quite a story to the musical bridge which I will put on shortly when not at work ! Achill is beautiful and the views from the top of Meenanun is quite simply stunning and a little beach at keem is a gem. Belmullet is again quite simply beautiful places like Ballyglass and the lighthouse there are magnificent. We will be returning again ........... hopefully next Easter !! |

Subject: RE: County Mayo - What to see From: GUEST Date: 27 Sep 05 - 12:58 PM Dont know if its been mentioned yet but there is a drive rated as one of the 10 most spectacular in the world. Starting in Westport Drive to Louisburgh along a beautiful coast road. Pass through Louisburgh and drive to Leenane via Doolough the black lake and Delphi valley where Prince Charles visited in a private capacity on his tript o Ireland. If you have time divert to Silver strand a remote and beautiful beech. From Delphi continue to a spectacular drive along the north edge of Kilary HArbour one of only two fjords in Ireland. Stop off to view the spectacular Aisling falls and finish up with a pint in Leenane where the movie The Field was filmed. One of the worlds great drives - absolutely beautiful |

Great fun, takes in plenty of music along the way (I remember a very good session that included the real Australian Minister for Culture and her sister, and a sensational village fleadh.)No horse knowledge needed, as full instruction is given and the horses know the area well. Subject: RE: County Mayo - What to see From: Warsaw Ed Date: 22 Sep 05 - 02:24 AM I visited County Mayo [Grandfather born near Bangor Erris - Grandmother born in Ballina]with my brother in August 2001. We stayed on the shore of an arm off Braod Haven Bay [east side] and at the Welcome Inn in Castlebar. If I were going back now the first thing I would do is check the website "Mayo On The Move" [Google will give the link] for the latest schedule of events and concerts. As to places to visit [in addition to Knock, Croak Patrich, Aran Islands, Belmullet and Westport] I would recommend Ballintober Abbey [on Route N84 about 10-12 miles south of Castlebar] and the boat cruise of the Lough Corrib islands leaving Oughterard on the west side. If your interests include Hill Walking and/or Diving, check with Neil McEleney at his Bed and Breakfast in Pullathomas Telephone 353 97 87800 or by EMail cunnafarraige@tinet.ie or neilmceleney@tinet.ie Tell him Ed and Jake Shevlin recommended him. Bon Voyage and let us know about your trip when you return. Ed |

Subject: RE: County Mayo - What to see From: alison Date: 07 Sep 05 - 02:51 AM I just love Achill, so many holidays there as a kid..... I try to go back every time I go home to Ireland. We used to camp at Seal Rocks near Dugort , gorgeous long sandy beach at the base of the mountain, and used to be wakened in the mornings by the braying of wild donkey herds. the Atlantic Drive is a must do.... the turquoise waters of Keem Bay at the end are amazing. the famine village / deserted village is interesting...... there is a dolmen not far from there half way up a mountain... path goes from the road alongside someones house, and is signposted. there is also Carrickilldavret (?? may not be correctspelling) Castle... which was a stronghold of Grainne Mhaille (famous Irish pirate queen) - its not too far from Achill Sound... and is really quite strange when you stand inside it to think how many people would have been crammed into it, in its day..... you'll love it... beautiful part of the world if you like wild scenery slainte alison |
Subject: RE: County Mayo - What to see From: GUEST,maire-aine Date: 06 Sep 05 - 01:28 PM Hi, Raggytash. My grandmother was born it a village called Fallmore, at the southern end of the Mullet peninsula. I've visited the area several times, altho it's been almost 10 years since the last visit. Several things have been added in that time. Ceide Fields has been mentioned-- the visitor center was only being built, so I haven't been inside. You might check out this local museum , which is also relatively new. |

The River Moy is one of Ireland's foremost salmon and trout rivers if you fancy casting a fly (the upper Moy runs through part of the family farm). Peace, moo |

Subject: RE: County Mayo - What to see From: MudGuard Date: 06 Sep 05 - 10:01 AM Richard, is "Enniscrone" the same place as the one marked on my maps as "Inishcrone"? On the east side of Killala bay? Btw, Raggytash, in Killala is a round tower, and a bit further south on the west side of Killala bay are the ruins Rosserk and Moyne - and some stone circles and standing stones near there as well. |
Subject: RE: County Mayo - What to see From: mooman Date: 06 Sep 05 - 08:43 AM Hi Raggytash! Enniscrone used to be a lovely little seaside village with a great beach (though a bit seaweedy if I remember from my youth). It's about 17 or 18 km from the "family seat" (Dromore West and Easky would be our local sea places). Over the past couple of decades though it has become a bit of a NW Ireland Mecca for water sports and surfing as the Atlantic breakers are a decent size there. While there is still traditional music in at least one pub (I can't remember the name), there is quite a boisterous "not interested" crowd in the place these days and, yes, there most definitely is the dreaded krapioke (quite a few nights a week I think... not just Tuesdays!) Peace moo |
Subject: ADD: Tuesday Night is Always Karaoke From: GUEST,Raggytash Date: 06 Sep 05 - 06:37 AM Ho Mooman, do you know Anthony John Clarke's song "Tuesday Night is Always Karaoke" it's based on Enniscrone, is Enniscrone really as bad as that ? The song starts The wind blew so cold against the west coast of Ireland Rita would not go into the water picture the scene Mother, father icecream huddled round their little sons and daughter well the rain it cut right through it kept on falling down I found myself a hotel bar in the harbour side of time I said I'd play for nothing cos the tourist was in town but Tuesday night is always Karaoke,Tuesday night is always Karaoke There's only Karaoke up on Enniscrone no whistles and no fiddles and the bodhran stay at home I never heard a single mandolin or accordian groan cos Tuesday night is always Karaoke |
Subject: RE: County Mayo - What to see From: mooman Date: 06 Sep 05 - 06:03 AM The Céide Fields Centre certaily as mentioned above. I would also very much recommend a walk along the Belderrig cliffs (1000 feet+) which are a bird haven. From Inver northwards is a beutiful stretch of coast. Inland, the blanket bog is one of the largest in Europe and another haven of wildlife and tranquility. Sian and Andy have already mentioned Achill. Hell, this is making me homesick! Peace (moo) (from not far to the East t'other side of Ballina) |
