Subject: INFO ON MUSIC SESSIONS IN LONDON PLEASE! From: folk_kitty Date: 11 Sep 05 - 12:23 PM Hey! I am moving down to London at the beginning of October to start my degree and would appreciate any info about music sessions that go on particularly around the Stockwell area (where I will be residing until Christmas at least) and/or the Swiss Cottage area where my drama school is. I don't drive, so places easily accessible by public transport from those areas are preferable, although in London everywhere should be pretty easy to reach I guess. If possible, please recommend places with reasonably priced pints as I will be on a student budget, although I accept that as a Northerner the price of stuff will come as rather a shock anyway! Thankyou for your help. |
Subject: RE: INFO ON MUSIC SESSIONS IN LONDON PLEASE! From: Alan Day Date: 11 Sep 05 - 12:36 PM I would very much recommend THE George a lovely old pub south side of London Bridge in the High Street.Have a look at The George on their website it is one of the oldest pubs in London. Session 1st Monday in the Month unless there is a Bank Holiday and it is the week after. The music is mainly English,French, Breton, possibly Swedish and whatever the person who is playing decides on.There is the odd rare song but it is mainly a music session. It will be just down the road from Stockwell about three stops on the tube.See you there? Al |

From: Sarah the flute Date: 11 Sep 05 - 02:53 PM For Irish stuff there's the Kilkenny Tavern (next door to South Wimbledon Tube -last tube midnight) on Tuesdays starts 9ish, or The Blythe Hill Tavern, Blythe Hill Near Catford Railway Station on Thursdays also 9ish. Both sessions very friendly and welcoming. Sarah |
Subject: RE: Info on Music Sessions in London, Please! From: GUEST,Peter from Essex Date: 11 Sep 05 - 05:01 PM English music session lunchtime, first Sunday monthly. The Horseshoe, Melior Street, SE1 It's about 3 streets away from The George Cajun music session in the bar of Cecil Sharp House 1st Friday monthly approx 7:30 - 9:00 (A live Cajun band comes on upstairs at 9, if you stay you have to pay for that of course, but there is a discount with your NUS card) The House has the most reasonably priced beer I have found in London. |

Subject: RE: Info on Music Sessions in London, Please! From: Richard Bridge Date: 12 Sep 05 - 03:40 AM Pick up a copy of the EFDSS affiliated handout, "Folk London" at a subscribing club and it will give you lots of info. A year's subscription to it is not huge adn then you know you will not miss an issue. |
Subject: RE: Info on Music Sessions in London, Please! From: GUEST,Hootenanny Date: 12 Sep 05 - 12:26 PM What type of session are you looking for? Irish, American, Old Time, Bluegrass, British. Not all sessions are advertised in the listings mags. Hoot |
Subject: RE: Info on Music Sessions in London, Please! From: GUEST,Peter from Essex Date: 12 Sep 05 - 04:36 PM Folk London does not carry a sessions list. For anything east of the Lea try here. There may be the odd ommission where participants don't want the session publicised. Walthamstow Folk have a short session before the club starts and in the interval. Normal club admission applies for this. There is an Irish music circuit centred on Hammersmith and Camden with little overlap with the English folk club scene. Karen Ryan of London Lasses is a good contact for these. |
