Subject: Lyr Req: We were christening the baby From: Edain Date: 11 Sep 05 - 02:24 PM I heard this song over summer but helpfully can't remember where or even many of the lyrics but the basis was a load of people getting drunk after the birth of a child. What I can remember of the chorus went: We were christening the baby We were christening the baby We were christening the baby and thats all I can remember (useful eh?) Any help greatly appreciated. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: We were christening the baby From: Edain Date: 11 Sep 05 - 09:46 PM Rowdy song, definately. If memory servers me correctly the tune was 'Battle Hyme of the Repulbic'. I heard it in a sing around although at what festival or even if it was my local club I really can't remember. UK No other lyrics I'm afraid, although the last verse did end with the vicar asking for payment and them saying they couldn't afford it so keep the kid (I think, it's a bit sketchy because the chorus is so catchy it pushed everything else out) |

Subject: Lyr Add: >WE WERE CHRISTENING THE BABY From: Edain Date: 22 Sep 05 - 06:44 PM Having managed to track the lyrics down from someone at my local club I thought I should share them with you lot too. WE WERE CHRISTENING THE BABY Down to Betsy Taylor's house so merrily we filed, Where the baby boy was born - a lovely little child The neighbours came from miles around, the aunts and uncles too We were full of admiration when the baby came in view We gave the baby half-a-crown and everything was grand Until someone took the money from the little darling's hand And we spent it buying bitter beer 'till we could hardly stand And we all went rolling home We were christening the baby We were christening the baby We were christening the baby And we all went rolling home When the christening day came round the crowds flocked in galore There were thousands packed inside the church and more outside the door The parson he came in and said "hello thou drunken set What name wouldst thou likest me to give the little pet?" I said "We'll call it Betsy" but the parson meek and mild He look the baby over and he answered with a smile "Thou canst not call it Betsy 'cos it ain't that kind of child" And we all went rolling home We were christening the baby We were christening the baby We were christening the baby And we all went rolling home When it was all over we went out to the gate We said sorry to the parson there for making a mistake The parson held his hand and asked for L.S.D But none of us had got a quid to pay the christening fee The parson he got angry and demanded half a quid He said "Who is going to pay me now for all the work I did?" So just to save an argument we let him keep the kid An we all went rolling home We were christening the baby We were christening the baby We were christening the baby And we all went rolling home From the singing of the Suffolk singers Hubert Freeman, Gordon Woods and Alf Peachey. |
