You missed a very good evening indeed.

Please be aware that the next evening at Faldingworth is on Friday November the 4th 2005.

The club is not open on the 21st October, as the Gainsborough Folk Festival starts that night, and anybody who is anybody will be there to support such an excellent event.

oh so we have missed the wrong friday at Faldingworth ....rats I will be in big trouble when Jen finds out.
We are all fine here Les and hope that we find you and all the other mudcatting folk clubers in the same condition.
We had a great week away and visited four Fc's were made most welcome in each of them and played a few songs as well.
Hope you are over the upheaval of your move and kindly forgive the spelling as it is quite early in the AM.
Best to all and hope to see you soon.
cheers Tim

I have heard some terrible rackets with P.A and my humble opinion is that a skilfull and experienced performer can make just as big a idiot of themselves with or without,or at least I can.
When it is set up properly and the desk jockey is well oiled the effect of enhancement can be spot on.
OK Big Rob you can let go off me arm now.
I refer to Rob the 6ft6inch sound and recording engineer of my aquaintance who takes as much pride and care over the gigs he "performs"as any other artiste.
was the gainsbro festival a good un ?or is that for another thread?
Cheers all Tim

Must admit, I quite liked not having to use a PA. We usually do and it felt quite strange without mics and Angela without her electric cello but it was a pleasant change although scary for me because i haven't got a very powerful voice, especially if nervous. I hate the hassles of pa, monitors, speakers and thousands of wires (which I usually manage to trip over!)
Sound checks are difficult when you have more than one band playing and ideally the sound man needs to be at the back of the room to hear what the audience are hearing. I think it is good to have a variety of music and that Les is strict with timing because we all tend to get carried away when performing and think...just one more song...
Trouble is, the last acts of the night miss out on time if the earlier ones hog the stage so keep up the nagging re time, Les, it is good and we all understand, honest!

I agree that PA is necessary at times and Technical and myself need to use it on some occasions. However there needs to be a proper sound check so that the instruments and voices are well balanced.PA doesn't necessarily mean loud, it just makes it easier to sing for a longer period of time as you are able yo use your voice more gently. To be fair to the band on Friday, they did not have the chance to run a thorough sound check. If they had had the opportunity to do this it might have sounded much different. Having said all that, I am so glad that PA is not going to be the norm. It's so heavy to carry about and it takes ages to set up. Then, when you have worn yourself to a frazzle doing you spot, you have to take it all down again. I prefer to sing without it in your club. Keep up the good work Les!!!!

Thanks for all the nice comments everyone.

Tim
I personnally do not think a PA is necessary as the accoustics are so good there. However THPB need the PA becuase of trying to balance up all the different instruments etc.
So rest assured PA is not the norm and never will be.

Some performers will not work without a PA.
Vin Garbutt is an example. Vin does so many bookings, the PA is used to save his voice. Anyway he will be on next year on June the 10th. :-)

Keep it up, Les.

Hear hear...it is a condition I have only just learnt of because my friend has it. The more publicity lupus gets, the more chance of funds being raised for research and hopefully find better ways of helping sufferers of this condition. It has very far-reaching effects into the lives of those who have it and their families who support them.
Please everyone, look at the link at the start of this thread and just spend 5 mins finding out about lupus.
Thanks again Les.

Ah go on Les
'tis your cute smile and winning ways that did the trick not all that wailing and strumming and bashing
Although that was good as well
My better half MRsT said sorry for the coughing fit and she was really touched that you came out in the cold to see if she was all right.
I told her it was more likely that you were checking to see if we had paid to get in.
Another enjoyable evening Les,thanks to all those musicians, and what a great audience you attract to the club you really do get to hear some great songs and good music in that hall.
Seemed quite a lot of the amplification last night not that I am complaining mind we have electrickert in our shed now
was just suprised
It is such a fabulous accoustic in the hall I didnt think any one would need amps etc.
Still that is probably a sign of ignorance on my part.
Should have been up and dancing but will never be drunk enough tthat far out of Town

Thanks one and all.

Plugged in......GASP.........Not Electrickery?
Do they still burn witches out there in the hinterlands of Faldinworth
or shall we bring the ducking stool from Grimsby.....
I though that the village hall was a place of purity and freedom from the evils of the modern world.
So all this time we have been sitting listening by candle light we were surrounded by the devils circuitry?
fOR SHAME les and I thought it was a Proper folk club!

.......Errrr...... By the way .....did you say the comfy chairs were coming for this meeting......
....Do you think we could book 5 for tonight?
Cu later guys.

Do come back :-)

Rockhen - not sure of the order.
In order to get the blend right it will probably be something like this.
Gwenda with Piano and Terry Cater
Stitherum
Wild Wolds Women
Mick Pearce
The Higgledy Piggledy Band

Things could change on the night, so don't take above as fixed

Will pass on your nice words, Tim, to mello cello chick as we are meeting tonight for a practice and jamming session. She will bring her 'proper' cello...it doesn't usually come out with the band but it shouldn't be used as a beer rest at the folk club so I think it should be safe!
I will be pretending that my piano is not plugged in...but at least try to plug my pedal in the right place straight away, this time! Do you think Gwenda will do her risque song? I thought her delivery was priceless last time, it had me in stitches!
