(C C/G C/G#, Am Am/E Am/F#, C G7 C)
C            F   G7 C                         G 7      C (g e g < c)

And the homeland so far away ten days already the battle has raged,
And there was no time to rest, days and nights the motor never stopped,
We assaulted and fought and battled our way forwards,
Truly united with our tanker friends, always the first against the enemy.

Armoured infantry, forwards, towards victory!
Armoured infantry, forwards, we are attacking!
As once in Poland and in Flanders, and in the hot desert sand,
Every enemy is dealt with, till the last fortress falls, and assaulted and overrun.
Overrun by armored infantry, armored infantry.

Russian cold, rain and ice,
Doesn't delay us anymore.
Even when the sun burns pitilessly,
Yes, we gladly accept it.
The Russians run away in headless flight,
annihilatingly defeated with iron weight.
Truly united with our tanker friends,
We pursue the enemy without rest.

Be true, my girl, keep this in mind,
once we will return home.
Remember your armored infantryman,
since you can be proud of him.
Waiting and fighting isn't always easy,
Yet otherwise a goal will never be reached.
Truly united with our tanker friends,
Always the first against the enemy.

[Song of the Armoured Infantry]

"tanker" is the wrong word... it doesn't mean a tank crew, it means a road or rail vehicle, or a ship, carrying liquids, notably oil.

"Tank crew", someone will come up with the right word.

Also, "armoured" infantry conjures up someone clad in a tin suit. "Tank support squad" or some such might be better, but I'll leave that to military experts.

I can't imagine many of the poor buggers singing this when there wasn't an officer around.

Change the headline to: Lied der Panzergrendiere (last n omitted)

"Panzerkameraden": lit. armoured comrades. I never heard soldiers of the American garrison nearby address themselves as "tankers", always as armoured.

"Armoured": Nowadays nobody would think of a modern infantryman wearing a tin suit. It is now widely understood as using armoured combat vehicles. In the west often "mechanized infantry" is used.

In the armies of the Warszaw Treaty Organization the infantrymen were called "motorized riflemen", but they sat in APCs.

"Tank support squad" is the wrong word for an entire arm which is able to fight for its own, too. Sometimes the infantry did the main work and was supported by tank troops.

"poor buggers": After the victories in Poland and especially France where they defeated two armies, and the advance in Russia they were a proud lot. But after Stalingrad ...

Tanker normally means a vehicle carrying liquid or gas to a 'civilian' - we have milk, petrol, and LPG takers on the road in Australia.

Brits would say tankies.
Armoured infantry is correct.

Well, not my tape of song at all.

However, 'Panzerkameraden' does not refer to the 'Panzergrenadiere' it refers to the soldiers fighting in tanks. 'Our friends in the tanks' is what is meant here, in my reading.

Wilfried is right: "mechanized" infantry.

And that's "heedless" flight, not "headless". "Annihilatingly defeated" -- overkill, no?

Translation is a thankless task!
