Hi guys,
Thought it about time that I let you know that FILO Folk are branching out. The "First In Last Out - FILO" has been so well frequented that people are clambering for more. In addition to the weekly Tuesday night, I have been asked by public demand to carry on with the Saturday nights. Instead of every Saturday night I am organising a first Saturday on the month session starting Saturday 1st October, from 8 til late. Let's Folk for pleasure; no matter how good or bad, sing or play, be there and lets do it.

Check it out Raggy, Nomad, Captain Crabbe, Mandoman, the Bolton Six, calling the Hull chapter and all points North, South, East and West

Bev, Macca (fiddle) and myself (Chris) popped into "First in last Out" on Thursday night during Whitby Folk Week and what a brilliant night we had!!! It were stonkingly good!! Bev has been in touch with you I believe and we'll be there on Sat 1st Oct with a few other friends from Huddersfield. We're sorting out B&B overnight so we can have a proper night out. A very memorable gentleman that evening in August was Tony Morris. Will Tony be there on 1st Oct? What was also very special to us that night was how the local people joined in with the playing/singing. It reminded me of very happily and accidently "happening" upon the craik/crack (or however they spell it!) in Ireland. Long may it reign; you can't beat a good community pub. But do people know how to find the "First in last Out" pub? It's off the beaten track in Whitby so it might be worth you giving a few directions/ guidance notes! See you on Sat 1st Oct.

Sandy & I certainly enjoyed the two sessions we attended before & during the festival this year.
So, whenever I am passing on the first Saturday of the month, I will bear it in mind!
But it is 205 miles from Stratford-upon-Avon, where I live!

LJ - York Terrace, Fishburn Park, Whitby.

If you are unfamiliar with the town I suggest you get to the station, which is quite close by, then ask a local. The pub is a bit tucked away and you would be unlikely to find it just by walking about.

It was certainly a new folk experience to me!!
Gnomad, are you sure the address is York Terrace? I thought it was on Park Terrace. The way we got to FILO was to go up the steps on the left of the railway station towards the Hospital, then turn left passed the main Hospital entrance, then turn right up North Road and then second left onto Park Terrace and the FILO was further down Park Terrace on the right after a small convenience store.
Sorry to be pedantic but it is a confusing warren of streets of terraced housing in that part of Whitby!

First In Last Out is a little back street pub tucked away from the tourist area of Whitby in an area known as fishburn Park. Stu started a folk session on a Tuesday some time ago and tried to start a saturday night session as well with mixed results. He has now decided to give it another shot which happily coincides with group of people from Huddersfield who decided independently to have a weekend in Whitby and have a session (with the landlords OK)on the 1st of October.
Primarily a singing session with a few tunes thrown in for good measure, the pub itself is a tad scruffy but very welcoming and Chuck, the landlord, is very supportive of the music

"First In, Last Out" pub hence FILO Folk. Two ways to get to it
1. From the college camp site head for traffic lights and cross straight over road down Waterstead Lane. Go past the Ambulence Station then as road bends to right take the left fork. Carry on down to junction where there is the Railway Chippy on R/H corner and Pub directly opposite.

2. From Bus Station. With the Railway Stn on your left head up past the library and keep following the main road which bends up a rather steep hill. Take the second left which is Park Ter one side and Cleveland Ter t'other (primitive economy drive!)Take next first right and follow your nose/ears etc.

What have we got? Genuine people, quality people, friendly people and no rubber-neck tourists wif knotted hanky round bonce!!!

Lastly Tony, our resident bard will be visiting with his usueal "Asshole Hassle". Don't worry it's a song!

Hi Michael, I will not be at Ribblehead, thought of calling in on the Sunday but it's one hell of a detour from my way home. I did ask if anyone wanted to share a house for the Ribblehead weekend but no-one came forward, my days of camping in October have been curtailed by my more sensible significant other. The idea of meeting some folk from Huddersfield in Whitby on the first was muted, so that's where we'll be heading

Soldier Boy: Re York Terrace/Park Terrace, phone book says York Terr, my instinct is with yours in thinking Park Terr.

Local Map on the largest scale available in shops shows York Terr as tiny but in the right place if the front door has been moved at some time, but YP does not even show up on mapping sites I have tried. Certainly going to Park Terr will get you there.

Hence my suggestion of get close, then ask.

Hi Raggytash. Bev has booked some rooms in a B&B next to the Black Horse. We are sharing two to a room which works out at £13.50 per person for the night.By the way, it's a B&B but it's bed only, no breakfast! At the mo she's booked in 8 people but I think there is room for more.

Not a bad night at all, thanks Stu for that and thanks for removing the Bodhran from a certain person whilst I was playing, very astute !
I didn't want to spoil the night (as so many people had travelled from Huddersfield)so said nothing to the culprit when he joined in out of time/rythym with other people. However I would be very grateful if someone could have a quiet word with him about the etiquette of joining in. I do not want to appear a Prima Donna but if he should join in with me on another occasion I will say something to him and if I have to repeat myself it may not be very polite. I do hope this won't be required.

For those who were not there (before I get critised)it is very difficult to maintain a song if someone if hitting a bodhran in a totally different time to the one you're playing in. It is positively distracting

This man must be in his fifties, seems intellegent so I can see no resason why he should not be able to apply the common decencies that we (nearly) all subscibe to. Is it really necessary to have to spell something out to certain people in words of one syllable for them to grasp the basic rule of thumb. That is, you do not interfer with someone else's song or tune if you are distracting them, or as in this case creating a bloody awful din. I would be very grateful if someone could explain the niceties of folk club etiquette to this chap.
I have raised this issue before when I was drowned out by another bodhran player (in a different club) who when asked to desist not only continued loudly but was joined by his female friend on one of those bloody rattle with beads round, both of them out of time with what I was singing and with each other ...... cacophony springs to mind

It may be a free world and long may it remain so, however that does not preclude the use of manners, it fact it relies on it. What right does one individual have to interject rank drumming into someone elses song, no question of my being asked if I minded, no question of other people present being asked when he interfered with their playing. Does this one individual have greater rights than the rest of us. As for learning, this is Whitby, we've just had a folk festival at which workshops were available for anyone at various levels.
Finally guest at least have the courage of your convictions to put your name to the thread, otherwise kindly mind your own business
