Calm down boys and girls and you, clonmel, behave yourself! The fact that you make reference to "the grannies from hell" clonmel shows that you must have been there on the night ( as I was ) because it was a term used by a certain gentlemen to affectionately describe a group of our more senior citizens who had ventured up from Huddersfield for the night with some more of us (including you!)

Sorry Chris but I get really pi**ed off with people why insist upon "playing" a Bodhran when it is patently obvious to all that they cannot even master the basic's of the instrument. To then join in with someone else and proceed to make a bollocks of their attemps to entertain is, to me, totally unacceptable. I shall ask Stuart to have a quiet word with the person is question and if that doesn't work I shall have a word myself, politely at first but far more assertively if that fails, I do not see why we should have to tolerate such rubbish.

Hi Raggytash. I know what you mean but you don't half rabbit on about it. Personally I think the gentleman in question is a unique,brilliant, totally off-the-wall entertainer who is highly intelligent and has unquestionable expertise in an astonishing array of instruments. Unfortunately, the Bodhran is not one of them (Or perhaps his extrovert and very individual style means that he actually refuses to play it in the traditional and accepted manner!) It was much funnier during Whitby Folk Week in a session in the FILO when a chap turned up who had just bought his first bodhran from the Pavillion (it was massive!)and started to watch and then copy the bodhran style of playing by the "gentleman in question".It was horrendous! comically horrendous! Good job you weren't there then or you would have gone ballistic!
It is unsettling when someone accompanies you who is completely out of rhythm ( we must all know loads of bloody awful bodhran players!)
but in this case I think his unique entertainment value easily outweighs the unusual bodhran playing. It works with his own material but very obviously not when joining in with others. So actually, yes you're right, perhaps someone should have a word with him - very politely and very respectfully please.

Unfortunately Chris I don't share your views on his merits, I found him boring in the extreme, 27 verse songs of no particular merit do not entertain me, his Bodhran playing was an insult to the assembled company (you know yourself how important rythym is to a percussion instrument being a fine drummer yourself)and I couldn't even escape his volume by going to the bog (I tried it twice and could hear every word)
My rant is not just aimed at this individual, I've experienced the same thing numerous times and although I acknowledge and accept there are varying degrees of ability in any one company I do not consider we should have to tolerate such c**p just because it is in a folk club, in any other genre of music they would be laughed out of court.
As for his expertise with other instruments and his intelligence I will defer to your greater knowledge as you obviously have greater experience than I, however I will have to consider whether I attend the session again on a Saturday night

PS Have spoken with the keeper of Hells Grannies and have been assured their are not due out in public for another 12 months. The drummer boy has been taken to a quiet place and summerily beaten to death. But before he died I managed to have a word in his shell-like about discordant bohdron bashing, OK?

Hi GUEST. I couldn't agree more. I admire this guy so much I bought his CD "Changing Tracks" when I was at the FILO at the night in question! Tony is a free spirit who is not shackled to the traditional and rigid conventions of what many expect from the folk experience. Having seen Tonys web site I understand what you mean by his philosophy on music and I respect it to the hilt.
BUT I must also concur with Raggytash and say that when playing "in company" you must at least try to fit in with the beat/ rythm, otherwise you either come across as inept or anti-social or ignorant. It's a close call because I have the utmost respect for Raggytash and Tony, and as far as I'm concerned long may the differences and pure clash of raw creativity continue.
Surely this is what "folk music" (in all its guises) is all about!

Guest, Bev ,I know you are besotted with me but please do not use this thread to to arrange secret assignations.

I have read with some amusement, the comments about an "out of rhythm" drummer, so far anonymouse and then named and shamed, it was a hoot 'cos I had his name in the frame almost immediately. My sympathies go out to you musos it is tough, singing is my only vice and it's hard when someone is singing off key and out of tune in your ear, worse though, is when musos join in when your singing in "Free time" and with a slightly different melody to the one they are playing, some one once said to me " you sang that all wrong"- "this is how it goes"..... Who's song was it anyway!
Maybe I could round the "boys" up for a trip to tuesday FILO, it sounds like our sort of thing!

Been reading this with interest and some sympathy. I remember when I first mooted taking my melodeon out and playing it in a local folk club a friend offered the advice "don't get up and do anything you wouldn't be prepared to sit through yourself". which I've always thought was good advice. Mind you, he now lives in Whitby - I hope it's not him with the drum. Over in Preston one of the folk clubs describes it's singer's night arrangements as "anyone can join in but don't mess it up". Having now had 30ish years of playing, sometimes with others, sometimes in spite of them, I can go with that.
