Subject: RE: Whitby F.I.L.O Folk From: GUEST,clonmel Date: 06 Oct 05 - 01:54 AM Well, now I've blown my cover.Maybe instead of an M.C.we could have a P.C. That is a police constable.Preferably armed. That would keep things in order. |
Subject: RE: Whitby F.I.L.O Folk From: GUEST,Raggytash Date: 06 Oct 05 - 04:02 AM Tell you what we'll arrange Clonmel, you let me know next time you're playing and I'll come and sit next you you and follow your tune/song playing the wrong notes , in a different time or better still I'll bring my good lady's bodhran, which I can't play, and join in with you ...... let us see how tolerant you are when faced with such abject playing ..... is it a deal |
Subject: RE: Whitby F.I.L.O Folk From: Soldier boy Date: 06 Oct 05 - 10:04 AM Calm down boys and girls and you, clonmel, behave yourself! The fact that you make reference to "the grannies from hell" clonmel shows that you must have been there on the night ( as I was ) because it was a term used by a certain gentlemen to affectionately describe a group of our more senior citizens who had ventured up from Huddersfield for the night with some more of us (including you!) Now, let me see clonmel, yes it has to be , you are Bev aren't you and I am Chris, remember me? So your cover is truly blown now Bev! Behave yourself and let's have less of your mischief and stirring things up you naughty girl. |
Subject: RE: Whitby F.I.L.O Folk From: Gedpipes Date: 06 Oct 05 - 10:15 AM Nice one Soldier Boy |
Subject: RE: Whitby F.I.L.O Folk From: GUEST Date: 06 Oct 05 - 10:37 AM You had best stay in Uddersfield and stay well away from Whitby if you need to be childish and direspectful to others, who's only crime is trying to learn the Boddasramas. |
Subject: RE: Whitby F.I.L.O Folk From: GUEST,Raggytash Date: 06 Oct 05 - 11:02 AM Sorry Chris but I get really pi**ed off with people why insist upon "playing" a Bodhran when it is patently obvious to all that they cannot even master the basic's of the instrument. To then join in with someone else and proceed to make a bollocks of their attemps to entertain is, to me, totally unacceptable. I shall ask Stuart to have a quiet word with the person is question and if that doesn't work I shall have a word myself, politely at first but far more assertively if that fails, I do not see why we should have to tolerate such rubbish. |
Subject: RE: Whitby F.I.L.O Folk From: Soldier boy Date: 06 Oct 05 - 12:02 PM Hi Raggytash. I know what you mean but you don't half rabbit on about it. Personally I think the gentleman in question is a unique, brilliant, totally off-the-wall entertainer who is highly intelligent and has unquestionable expertise in an astonishing array of instruments. Unfortunately, the Bodhran is not one of them (Or perhaps his extrovert and very individual style means that he actually refuses to play it in the traditional and accepted manner!) It was much funnier during Whitby Folk Week in a session in the FILO when a chap turned up who had just bought his first bodhran from the Pavillion (it was massive!)and started to watch and then copy the bodhran style of playing by the "gentleman in question".It was horrendous! comically horrendous! Good job you weren't there then or you would have gone ballistic! It is unsettling when someone accompanies you who is completely out of rhythm ( we must all know loads of bloody awful bodhran players!) but in this case I think his unique entertainment value easily outweighs the unusual bodhran playing. It works with his own material but very obviously not when joining in with others. So actually, yes you're right, perhaps someone should have a word with him - very politely and very respectfully please. |
Subject: RE: Whitby F.I.L.O Folk From: GUEST,Raggytash Date: 06 Oct 05 - 12:43 PM Unfortunately Chris I don't share your views on his merits, I found him boring in the extreme, 27 verse songs of no particular merit do not entertain me, his Bodhran playing was an insult to the assembled company (you know yourself how important rythym is to a percussion instrument being a fine drummer yourself)and I couldn't even escape his volume by going to the bog (I tried it twice and could hear every word) My rant is not just aimed at this individual, I've experienced the same thing numerous times and although I acknowledge and accept there are varying degrees of ability in any one company I do not consider we should have to tolerate such c**p just because it is in a folk club, in any other genre of music they would be laughed out of court. As for his expertise with other instruments and his intelligence I will defer to your greater knowledge as you obviously have greater experience than I, however I will have to consider whether I attend the session again on a Saturday night |
Subject: RE: Whitby F.I.L.O Folk From: suzi Date: 06 Oct 05 - 12:57 PM I think its time certain people here grew up....F.I.L.O. is supposed to be a folk club not a nursery. Life is very valuable, so enjoy it, and stop bickering over such petty things.... |

We had a good night on Sat. If we had not had the flu bug it would have a been a great night! Thank you one and all for the contributions. PS Have spoken with the keeper of Hells Grannies and have been assured their are not due out in public for another 12 months. The drummer boy has been taken to a quiet place and summerily beaten to death. But before he died I managed to have a word in his shell-like about discordant bohdron bashing, OK? Without youse guys t'would not have been a good night. See you agin 5 Nov at the FILO when were going to make effigies of 3 Hells Grannies plus friend and give 'em a bowron............then set fire to 'em............ |

Im simply using this forum to express myself. It may be that you disagree with my opinions, but thats no excuse for putting me at risk of being lynched .I personally believe that the Grannies added a certain je ne sais quoi to the whole affair. And i particularly enjoyed the percussion section. In fact I think Ill get myself one of them there beggorrums. And a variety of little sticks to hit it with. And you can march of into the sunset in your little red coat. |

Subject: RE: Whitby F.I.L.O Folk From: GUEST Date: 07 Oct 05 - 06:18 PM Just for the record, the man much maligned for his musical skills is actually quite famous.and he has a website at www.tonymorrispoet.com So have a look and give some credit where its due.His philosiphy on music is particularly apt in view of the venom his creativity has unleashed. |
Subject: RE: Whitby F.I.L.O Folk From: Soldier boy Date: 07 Oct 05 - 09:40 PM Hi GUEST. I couldn't agree more. I admire this guy so much I bought his CD "Changing Tracks" when I was at the FILO at the night in question! Tony is a free spirit who is not shackled to the traditional and rigid conventions of what many expect from the folk experience. Having seen Tonys web site I understand what you mean by his philosophy on music and I respect it to the hilt. BUT I must also concur with Raggytash and say that when playing "in company" you must at least try to fit in with the beat/ rythm, otherwise you either come across as inept or anti-social or ignorant. It's a close call because I have the utmost respect for Raggytash and Tony, and as far as I'm concerned long may the differences and pure clash of raw creativity continue. Surely this is what "folk music" (in all its guises) is all about! Guest, Bev ,I know you are besotted with me but please do not use this thread to to arrange secret assignations. Please take one of your beggorrums and grannies from hell and march with me into the sunset with my little red coat. Bless! |

Subject: RE: Whitby F.I.L.O Folk From: stallion Date: 03 Mar 06 - 04:11 AM Hi all, I have read with some amusement, the comments about an "out of rhythm" drummer, so far anonymouse and then named and shamed, it was a hoot 'cos I had his name in the frame almost immediately. My sympathies go out to you musos it is tough, singing is my only vice and it's hard when someone is singing off key and out of tune in your ear, worse though, is when musos join in when your singing in "Free time" and with a slightly different melody to the one they are playing, some one once said to me " you sang that all wrong"- "this is how it goes"..... Who's song was it anyway! Maybe I could round the "boys" up for a trip to tuesday FILO, it sounds like our sort of thing! Peter |
Subject: RE: Whitby F.I.L.O Folk From: GUEST,Raggytash Date: 03 Mar 06 - 07:21 AM Thanks for the reminder, will be in Whitby but will need to practice for a forthcoming gig, with my oppo who lives in Essex, don't know if the FILO is the right place to do it |
Subject: RE: Whitby F.I.L.O Folk From: Ruston Hornsby Date: 03 Mar 06 - 08:35 AM Been reading this with interest and some sympathy. I remember when I first mooted taking my melodeon out and playing it in a local folk club a friend offered the advice "don't get up and do anything you wouldn't be prepared to sit through yourself". which I've always thought was good advice. Mind you, he now lives in Whitby - I hope it's not him with the drum. Over in Preston one of the folk clubs describes it's singer's night arrangements as "anyone can join in but don't mess it up". Having now had 30ish years of playing, sometimes with others, sometimes in spite of them, I can go with that. Mike |
Subject: RE: Whitby F.I.L.O Folk From: GUEST,Raggytash Date: 03 Mar 06 - 09:12 AM took the resurrection of this thread to mean there was a night on Saturday, it being the first saturday of the month, is there a session on the 4th |
Subject: RE: Whitby F.I.L.O Folk From: gnomad Date: 03 Mar 06 - 11:00 AM Re Sat 4Mar2006, yes, it's on according to Charliestu. If Ruston Hornsby is who I think it is then I don't remember saying that, but it fits what I would advise and sounds like me. Welcome to the world of lunacy, I never set fire to Stan's cap and it wasn't me snoring that night, I was in bed miles away. Either way no, the drummer ain't me, though I did witness the matter. Bit wet underfoot, I must be in de Nile. |
Subject: RE: Whitby F.I.L.O Folk From: GUEST,Ruston Hornsby Date: 03 Mar 06 - 11:57 AM Oh yes - 'tis me. I'm glad it's not you with the drum. And I will admit to acidentally setting fire to the late Stan Compton's corduroy cap during a song from the similarly departed Ken Loveless. We could have made him put it on and perform Arthur Brown's "Fire".....wasn't he from Whitby....? Mike |
Subject: RE: Whitby F.I.L.O Folk From: stallion Date: 04 Mar 06 - 05:14 AM Had a word with the "boys" we would like to come to the session, could someone PM me with the dates of the next couple of sessions? cheers peter |
