The heart of Miskin has always been immeasurable!

This was a considerably smaller thread than the 2007 one, and I suspect the 2005 one smaller still.

Do we have any idea how much Miskin has grown, and how many people are likely to have been there, year on year up to last year 2006?

I've got a spare Thursday night, which you can borrow till August.

Only a few things left behind this year but Jillie recomends you do as the kiddies at her school do and attach name labels to every bit of clothing!!
One heavy black knitted jumper
One Black woolly hat
One black Waistcoat with a stiched pattern.
We have even been through the photos looking for the waistcoat and cant find it.
I'll bring them all to Upton and the Fox and Hounds. Something less than DNA testing will do as proof of ownership!!

Thanks to amazing efforts by "My Guru Always Says" and her merry band at Miskin at Easter, the sum of £430 was raised in the raffle. A further £80 was raised by Lesley's "name the Bar Bunny" and other donations. A grand total of £510. Well done.

Since none of us wants to wait a whole year for next Miskin, I don't suppose there's any chance of reviving the Winter Warmer? I realise that would be a lot more work on top of what you already do.

Happy birthday Jillie!

I do hope that the two of you...and Anna actually managed to enjoy yourselves too. You seemed to be working all the time.

Anna has managed to addict my daughter and I am now searching around for lace-making groups in NW Leicestershire.

At Last!
I can now add a couple of comments!
It took me and Brenda a few days to recover from this year's Miskin, which is why I haven't posted before, just totally knackered! - the whole weekend was magic, meeting old friends and making new ones.
The music was great from beginning to end.
It is difficult to pick out a "Magic Moment" but one was playing Teddy Bear's Picnic with Ned (Splott Man) outside in the sunshine.
Playing in Nellies Bar alongside Mick Pierce at various times during the weekend was a privelige, hearing Vikki and Johnny and their young friends was fantastic and howling with laughter with Bill and Joan, getting Giggly with Trefor and Vicki and...on...and..on and on!!

Thank you Andy and Jillie and all their helpers.

Dave'n'Brenda

You are just the most wonderful bunch of friends a bloke could wish for; I am so proud and happy. It is a truly humbling experience to be able to gather together such a group with such a bond of friendship and so much phenominal collective talent. I have followed every word of this Mudcat thread since the very start and time permitting chipped in occasionally. The last few days I have been reading in absolute wonder!! What have I got here? I wanted to reply to each and every thankyou personally and was waiting for the fuss to die down, but it hasn't. And then last night the amazing gesture of waiting for me to get the 500. You know I'm a soft old bugger, and that was the final emotional straw. (Tissues please)
It is Jillie's Birthday today so I will be trying to get her away from Miskin chat and relax for the day. You should see the lists that She and Anna have made already for next year!!
For the time being, a real heartfelt collective thank you to all of you. Mudcat have really got the Miskin Tingle factor. I love you all.
Andy

Yes another great Miskin. Thanks Andy and Jilly and also to loads of others but especially the kitchen and bar crews -excellent. The clearing up on Monday was brilliant as everyone pitched in - Thanks to Vicki Swan for helping me hoover the stairs and to Ian Woods who I also saw with a hoover! NB He also made the log fire from scratch on Friday morning, oh yeah and I heard him sing a bit too so I guess he ought to get invited back again being so versatile! Kath and I enjoyed our spot - it was good to be back amongst the brilliant acoustics of the cottage once again! I also enjoyed Ember who seem to have quite a few mentions on here.

On a differnt tack - if you bought a BRIAN INGHAM CD for MACMILLAN at Miskin please read the thread about it and email me.Ta!

Rosanna, as I said last year...if your Dad is working, we'll come the (very) long way round and get you...even if you have to sit on the roof!

Yes the bar was good...Black Rat!!! Ecstasy! AND it lasted till very nearly the end too. The food was wonderful, apart from the tendency to stick coleslaw, which I loath, on everything.

The only big complaint is that there is too much going on at once so that I missed a lot of things and people I would have liked to see and hear.

Sounds as though Burberry Morris needs to be given a spot next year!

Just like to add my thanks for a great festival too. Having not done much with folk music for a year or so (too much classical guitar!) it was a great way to get back to it. It was nice to meet quite a few people from the South who I hadn't seen since I moved.

I particularly enjoyed the mid-afternoon guitarry sessions in Nellie Deans' on Friday and Saturday with Dave Bennet (Dave4Guild - excellent guitarist) and John Barden (The Barden of England - great voice and songwriter and a pleasure to meet).

The organisation was excellent. The bar was the most efficient I've seen it (I missed last year, so it may have been as good then) - I never had to wait for more than one person ahead of me all weekend. And I must add my own praise for the sound in the Scout Hut - it even made me like listening to myself! The food also seemed well sorted out on the few occasions I used it.

Thanks again Andy and Jillie.

Already counting down the days til next year's. Fingers crossed that Dad's rota works out so that we can get down in 2007 but if not, I'm walking!
=( Very upset to hear that I missed Chav Morris Dancing by the way, it sounds like it was a laugh...innit. =p
Oh yeah 'Mash' is thinking of changing their name- anyone got any ideas?? We didn't realise it was the name of an old-fashioned TV show until recently but it's kind of stuck and people have got used to it so we may not. We'll see what happens...
Anyway I've got to go because I'm meant to be revising but I'm looking forward to seeing everyone next year. Thank you so much to Andy, Jilly and the unsung heroes for making it such a great festival once again. I'm very proud that my violin now has the permanent smell of beer on it- I'm feeling like a true folkie!!

Pat and I had a lovely time at Miskin. My best moments were listening to Graham Metcalfe and Ian Wood. My most tingly moment was hearing Ian Woods sing a self-penned song called (I think) something like 'Lady of the Mountains', which he sang in The Cottage on Sunday night after the official concert. He has an amazing voice.

So many nice moments over the weekend.

Great weekend again - then a quiet drive home with an exhausted 'Mash' in the back of the car.

Lots of highlights for me. Watching the kids play (obviously)and having so much fun, singing in the cottage, meeting old friends, getting to know some familiar faces a bit better and meeting some new friends. Also enjoyed the 'find the harmony' game I got into with Mike Nicholson and Tony from Capella on Sunday night after the pills (and Jo's wine) had kicked in - see below.

Time Nick the soundman got a mention. He did a fantastic job with the PA system in the Scout hut again. One of the unsung heroes year after year.

Most missable part of the weekend for me was the tooth infection that kicked in on Saturday and made life pretty miserable for a while. Sitting in a tent extracting a filling with a penknife to relieve the pressure , by torchlight, is something I have no desire to repeat anywhere again. Try finding a Pharmacy open on Easter Sunday near Miskin!   Thanks to the person who finally supplied me with some industrial strength horse pills to relieve the pain, I'm in your debt. Last time I get my root canals done day before a festival !!

Rota and roots allowing, see you next year..

Huge thanks to you and Jillie and everyone else for a brilliant weekend. My special thanks to the musicians who played for Herbaceous Border and Schantieman for directing (??) the Mummers Play.

If anyone has any photos of Herbaceous (especially when we 'danced on the Friday when the sky turned black') please tell me or Andy. Selchie suggested I send an article in to the Morris Federation magazine to mark this 'new Miskin Tradition' so a photo would help.

Home safe, unpacked, slept, done a days work & Miskin's Magic is still with me. As Lynne says, it brings you right back to where you should be. To Andy, Jillie & all the Hard Workers my eternal thanks for this wonderful way of enjoying Easter!!

To all who contributed in whatever way to the MudRaffle - whether by organising, bringing prizes (we had about 60 in total), handing out prizes, being besieged time and time again by myself & Selchie and still smiling & putting your hands in your pockets for such a good cause - THANKYOU!

Special mention HAS to go to Selchie & also Maddy who proved to be True Stalwarts - how they put up with my bullying I have NO idea *grin* All in a good cause though....

Major thanks too to the lovely young Lady who especially made a batch of Easter Chocolate Cornflake Cakes, which though unclaimed as a prize, were enjoyed by many festivalgoers in the Sunday evening session in Nellie Deans - as were the other unclaimed raffle prizes, which thankfully were all edible.

The total of £430 for the raffle alone was incredible - goodness knows how much the Charity figure will be when the other monies are added in. Absolutely Fantastic!

Also forgot to mention how much I enjoyed 'Ember', and the singing and playing in Nellies and upstairs too, along with hearing all the wonderful singers and players in those sessions. The Hill did for me too, but when your six-pack has turned into a firkin, your bum needs two chairs to sit on, your lungs have been got at by a severe infection 5 years back, you're on 5 pills for the blood pressure and you're carrying a guitar, I suppose it is a bit daunting. Never mind - it helped to burn off some of the copious amount of ale that I drunk.

There is nothing like Miskin anywhere else, which is why people keep coming back - and spreading the word! It's just such a perfect start to the festival season, with room to see top-class performers uncluttered by mikes and amps; or join in a craft or dance workshop; or sing or play whatever floats your boat (almost round the clock if you wish); or even just to relax and talk and watch the world go by.

Great to see so many of the regular attenders back again, and so many new faces this year, who nearly all quickly seemed to "get" what Miskin is about and added their own wonderful contribution to that old Miskin magic.

With all the uncertainties of coping with an extra day, huge thanks must go to all the bar staff, kitchen staff and stewards for their extra duties, but especially to Andy and Jillie and their team for their planning beforehand and tireless work during the festival keeping their fingers on the pulse.

WassaiL! V

Oh, and where can I get the dance notation for that Upton-on-Severn "Chav" Dance?

Daughter! That's naughty!! How nice though, to see my baby taking steps into being a grownup amongst all our extended family. I know they got quite a lot of teasing, but it was all very affectionate and I think the general thought was "Ahhhhhhhhhh....."

The music in the little marquee was certainly a wonderful way to go to sleep. Don't understand why other festivals make people stop playing at a certain time. Nothing noisy and intrusive about that sort of sound.

I'd like to go on about how great it was, but I've already said it. Miskin not only re-charges my folkie batteries, but actually reminds me of who I really am, which is priceless

Love Lynne

well, that was my first Miskin, and the only moan I have is about the climb back up to the campsite/carpark.. my dodgy ankle dinna care for it, oh and that kid with the train set, fancy his parents letting him run it all through the night..... need some wrong sort of leaves or conviscate 22yds of rail... that'll sort it it!. Found the cure for insommnia, stay up till 2am listening to the impromptu sessions, stopped only by lack of drink and frostbite!
-so , Monday night I'm in Coventry, and inna sesion with 2/3rds of Isambarde (the small and beautifully formed Jude was zzzzzzzzz), and Coleman Connelly strangling his gooseneck.....it were a tight squeeze in that wee room, and Coleman almost had his ear sawn off by Emma's bow several times..! so you see , the fun continues......
Thank you to Andy & Co, and all who took part.

Must join in with all the praise. Margaret & I plus of course the microbe (Ann) had a truely great time. Can I just mention the mini-sessions that took place in the heated tent, very relaxed and quite intimate little gatherings. When there were only two of us it was like running a folk club again!

Love to you all, David

First visit to Miskin, and I'm still completely stunned. Woke this morning with the sound of those sessions still ringing in my ears.

This was a truly amazing experience. Folk just doesn't get any better.

Thanksw to all for the way Winnie and I were taken into the heart of things by everyone, and what about Andy? I could swear he'd been cloned. He was everywhere at once, dealing with everything, quietly, efficiently, and always with a smile.

Thanks too to all those who worked their socks off so we could just enjoy.

Consider us booked for next year, and I'll swear off chain saws so that I can use the Framus.

One lasting joy is in knowing the people I'm talking to on the Cat. That really is beyond price.

Don & Winnie T.

Doctors should recommend Miskin as the perfect tonic!
What a wonderful weekend, Andy & Jillie take so much time for all those little things that make everyone feel great and their team work so hard but always with a smile.
We agree with Rosie - there's nothing else like it.
Miskin is No 1.

Hi all, just to voice my love and thanks to everyone for making my first Miskin a memorable time. The singing was fantastic and it was great to have time to actually talk to people for a change.
The accustics in the cottage are the best ever anywhere and singing in there was an absolute joy. Sunday's late session was great despite the port doing terrible things to my memory!!. had a great time and hope to come again next year. thanks Andy, Jillie and everyone else who made it such a brillient event. Just got back from the pub - too tired to cook!
Wow! I am glad I left Cornwall for Easter! How did they fit all those cars in while I was away! a solid 3 lane traffic jam from Wales to about Okehampton! - all going North!
Thank you Andy and Jillie and crew for the usual dose of fun, frolics, fine food and a fabulous Festival.
Highlights came thick and fast, For Me, Jim McAdams melted me with Westlin winds then disolved me into tears when he followed it with 'I Never Found My Eldorado' Mash were stunning and made me wish that I had stuck to attempting to play an instrument when I was younger - Dad you deserve to be rightfully proud! Great to see and hear Capella again. All those friends I have not seen - some for over a year - it's only now I realise how much Ive missed you all! I am miffed to have missed Hilary Ward (Guru) as I has to steward when she was on, but I know I'll catch up with her soon! - and well done with the raffle - you are a star! Sue White and Herbaceous Border - well me and Amber just loved it - Yippeee I can dance again! Vicki Swan & Jonny Dyer Yes Yes Yes more please! - and what a lovely couple! and the reason I soooo looked forward to Miskin was Harriet and Colman - and I was not disappointed. Then there was the Colman & Harriet, Vicki & Jonny, Isambarde session at the end of Sunday's concert what a stunning performance - the rehearsal wasnt half bad either! Oooh and the mega tissue event when Andy got presented with a cross stitch picture of the tune Jonny wrote, entitled 'Andy Jackson'
And the late night in the cottage sing with Peter Collins and Moira Craig last night was the greatest way to end the festival for me.
Thank you all who were there it was fun. A special thanks to the Saturday night misicians in the Marquee who played me to sleep in my camper in the car park. I have never has such a wonderful lullaby!
Great to see you Scooby - after tricking us all into thinking you weren't coming! Keep smiling.
So many magic moments I was not surprised to learn that the absent friends trophy was not awarded this year - how on earth could anyone choose!!!!!!
Great to put faces to more mudcat names!
Extended family of Miskinites I salute you all and thank you for your company and conviviality See you all again soon, if not next Easter!
Cheers, Lucy

Also new, from Robin Burns:

WELCOME TO THE MISKIN FESTIVAL
(Hotel California: The Eagles)

Driving along the motorway at seventy miles an hour
Passing all the cars along the way going just a little bit slower
Looking out for the exit, juction thirty four
Driving into Miskin
To hear the people roar

Welcome to the Miskin Easter festival
Such a lovely place, such a lovely space
    Such happy faces
Plenty of room at the Miskin Easter festival
One time of year, this time of year
    You can find it here

Down the road is the campsite, not close but not too remote
Covered in caravans and campers wedged level on the slope
If it rains it will get slippy and they'll end in a heap
Right down at the bottom
For that slope is steep

The bar is stacked with barrels full of real ale
We are all real ale drinkers so no other beer's for sale
You can always tell a folkie by the tankard hanging on his hip
He always drinks in swallows
Never takes a sip

There's songs of every kind, some of this and some of that
Sung by every kind of voice; level, harp and flat
With instruments in staes of tune from 'out' to 'almost in'
The real ale blends it all
Into one great glorious din

Squeeze boxes squeezing in and out for Morris in the yard
Men and women in coloured clothes, red face and breathing hard
Some say it is passion, some say it's the dance
But the bunkhouse has only single bunks
Nothing's left to chance!

Also, new song (of mine) for Miskin this year, bearing in mind the recent wedding in S.Wales:

Bugeilio'r Maes Gwyn: (Miskin Watch)
(tune)Bugeilio'r gwenith gwyn

Idle days at Easter time
In poor, or clement, weather.
At Miskin in Glamorgan's Vale
We all will meet together.
In "The Cottage" or "The Mill"
We'll all combine our singing.
We'll meet our friends; we'll drink our fill,
We'll set the rafters ringing.

Folk may come from far and wide.
From Porth or Tonypandy.
To toast Crane-Driver and his bride.
And raise a glass to Andy
It's he who keeps us coming here
To him a debt we're owing.
He books the site, he books the 'Acts'
He keeps the be-er flowing.

For long as salt is in the sea.
Long as my hair keeps growing (o.k. poetic licence, it's in the original)
Long as my heart beats in my breast
To Miskin I'll be going.
It is a small but friendly fest.
And we all love it dearly.
That's why so many of 'The Best'
Insist on coming yearly

So once more we'll sup our ale
And raise our voices higher
Once snug inside old Miskin Mill
Around that old log fire.

Message on behalf of Miskin Man:

"Having a lovely time: Wish you were here."

Or, to paraphrase:
The sun is up, the sky is blue
We're singing here, So where are you?
We're at Miskin. Miskin in South Wales.

The forecast is a good weekend
The singing here should never end
We're at Miskin
Where the **** (hell?) are you

Oh, Misery, misery.
By Sunday (night) we'll have barrels two or three.
Most of the beer has been the best
By Sunday night we'll drink the rest
And be singing. Singing in South Wales

Subject: RE: Miskin at Easter 2003
From: Nigel Parsons - PM

MISKIN 2003
(TTTO Llwyn Onn- The Ash Grove)

Verse 1
I went down to Miskin to visit a folk fest,
And see if the weekend held something for me.
I'd seen it on 'Mudcat' and thought it would be best
To visit 'cos some of my weekend was free
So I picked up my camera, and gathered my songbooks
My longing for singing. I gave it its head.
But when I arrived in that small Miskin village
The pub had no 'Hwyl',
And it all seemed quite dead!

Verse 2
I got to 'The Miskin' a pub with a hist'ry
And thought I might meet with someone from 'The 'Cat'
But as I sat drinking, I thought 'tis a myst'ry
These 'folk' are all locals, so where am I at?
But then I was 'pointed' down to the Scout campsite
Where folk were carousing inside Miskin Mill
I got introduced to some folk from the 'Cat site,
And sat there, conversed there, and drank there until....

Chorus
.. There was singing and drinking,
And dancing and drinking
Lace making, and drinking
'Corn dollies' and beer
I had such a time there that now I am thinking
I'll be back at Miskin at Easter next year!

Verse 3
So now that I've found what these folk fests are like, I
Am looking for somewhere new that I can go.
I've heard about Cambridge, Glynllifon and Sidmouth
And dancing with 'Obby 'Orse down at Padstow
But if I can make it
My wallet may take it
To Upton Upon Severn I'm hoping to go.
If I can just get there, I think it would be fair
To give up the booze for the weekend .although.

Chorus
There's singing and drinking,
And dancing and drinking
Lace making, and drinking
'Corn dollies' and beer
I'll have such a time there that now I be thinking
I'll have to do folk fests throughout all the year!

Nigel

No probs Don, but injuries can be self-inflicted on hands with chainsaws - ever tried sharpening the blades? Glad it's not hurting too much but we'll have spare plasters anyway. See you tomoorow tea-time :-)

Breton Cap - hope all from the labouring gang will have enough energy to enjoy Miskin to the full, if not, perhaps we could set up a 'runner system' to the bar for you *grin*

Original plan was to come over to Miskin on Thursday but not now leaving Cardigan till Friday morning. Hope there will be two beds still available in the bunkhouse when we get there.

Morticia and Idris arrive where I am later today and I assume will also arrive at Miskin on Friday as will Micca. we are all at Gervase and Mary-Jane's "Work-in progress" place " Heolas Fawr (Hell's Fire) at Y Ferwig (Earwig :-)!)near Cardigan.

See you all on Friday (and we have our contribution for the raffle)

Steve & Sal- we both would love to mummer, shall we bring our kit - what do you need? Can you email words so that I can print them and stick onto Steve's sheild like we usually do?
Sue the Border - I'll bring the old box to play (so long as someone else plays and covers all my bum notes) - do you want us to bring spare tatters too?

See you all on Friday afternoon - are you sure I don't need my wellies?

Looking at my last post, it came out sounding a bit petulant. It was meant to be a joke.

The upside is I woke this morning with no pain, in fact I've had papercuts that hurt more.

Roll on tomorrow! Breafast somewhere on the M4, while they get finished with the morning rush hour, then lunch at Miskin, hopefully.
I can't recall ever having looked forward to a festival more. I'm sure it will be the best.

See you all there

HELP WITH TRANSPORT HOME.
It hasn't even started and I'm trying to get rid of people!!!

Had a phone call this afternoon from Tracey Curtis. She has discovered that trains don't want to play on Easter Sunday or Monday so needs a lift home...
Tracey lives in Ammanford. Is there any kind soul travelling back that way late Sunday or even Monday who can offer a lift.
Ammanford is sort of North of Swansea.
I hope someone will be able to offer as I am really looking forward to hearing Tracey.

Thanks Moira for reminder to remind! As always I am running late so havn't had much chance to gather bonnet making stuff. If anyone out there can put their hand to paper/dried flowers ribbons that sort of thing suitable for bonnet decorating and indeed suitable bonnets themselves. I will re-imburse at the weekend of course.
Is this what delegating is about, people have been telling me to try it for years?

I can sing, "The Cruel Sister", in Norwegian! At Miskin, for you, if I get the chance.

P'raps we should have a, "Foreign Language Song Workshop".
Now there's a thought. And a, "Foreign Tune Session" too?
Ah! But, then being in Wales, English would be included. Or would it?

Vanwatch continutes!

The caravan shop has sold me the wrong size isolator valve, so I'm off to find another today.

Cold tap working (mostly) heater working (mostly) fridge working (mostly), so that leaves (apart from that isolator valve) one interior light fitting, a shelf modification, check the tail lights and then start cleaning and packing!.

Yes! we appear to have gas fridge operation too. Whether it will cope with summer temperature, who knows? But it ought to keep the beer cool enough for Easter!!

I now only need a gas isolator valve for the fire since the "off" setting is suspect, proper mastery of the "workround" for the cold tap microswitch, the slow puncture fixed, and a means to store ALL those instruments since we are now sorted for Jeff to come too.

Heater heating. Turning off is another matter, but there are ways...
Fridge fridging on mains electricity. Whether it will cope with summer heat another matter. Tomorrow we try it on gas...

We have a workround on the tap microswitch.

That leaves some shelving and figuring out how optimally to store the guitars, and the slow puncture.

Micca - what a wonderful link for the sunrise/sunset times. Last year (new to the internet), when trying to find sunrise times for Upton on Mayday, I could only come up with sites with incredibly complicated formulae to calculate. I gave up!

This one is just so easy. I've even navigated the map and come up with Miskin itself so, bearing in mind it will be British Summer Time, this year the times are:-

Sunset at Miskin on Good Friday 20.09.36
Sunrise at Upton on May Day    5.36.49 (and, yes, we aim to dance under the bridge at Upton from 5.30am!) [Sorry. Slight thread creep]

I'd love to take part in your mummers play, Schantieman

And - as for Herbaceous Border -
Last year we 'danced on the Friday when the sky turned black'; it seems a Good (Friday) tradition to keep up, so hopefully we can do the same this year. Anyone know what time sunset it that day? (Or we could aim at dusk)

Look out for posters giving that and other dance times. Anyone can join in even if they've never done any border morris dancing before - bring your tatters if you have them.

So - come and dance - or come play for us. On the Fri eve the tune will obviously be 'Lord of the Dance' so let's have a huge band!

Oh bugger! Thanks you two, but apologies for the tears, much prefer to know about smiles!

The Dutchman is kinda special though, it took 3 weeks of learning before I could sing it without bursting into tears - and then the first time I sang it out (Mudgather Banbury 2004) I started bawling my eyes out & couldn't finish the last verse. Aren't there some wonderful songwriters out there....

But back to the plot - there will soon be special offers on Easter Eggs in the supermarkets so look out for those raffle prizes!

We'll be with our van but I have to say the 'normal' site for Vans at Miskin has no hook-ups. There may be something that Andy can suggest under the circumstances, so don't despair, I'm sure he'll be along soon & answer your query!

Scooby: So glad you'll be on Parade, and complete with rafle prize - well done Girlie!

I shall be there with my wife, providing that I can get a pitch with electric hookup, either at the main site, or at a commercial park within reach.

If I can't use the heater in my van, my wife's arthritis renders her immobile on cold days.

Any information on the subject would be most welcome. We plan to arrive on the Thursday and leave on Tuesday morning.

For those I haven't met, look out for the big toothless lump with "Wysiwyg" across the scratchplate of his guitar.

To Richard Bridge and everyone else in general. As per usual the Mill Site is only available to us from Thursday late afternoon and has to be vacated by midmorning MONDAY This is more important than ever this year as there are a group of Scouts arriving Monday afternoon!!!!! The proper caravan and campsite 400 yards up the road will be available Thursday and you can stay here until TUSDAY. A much better bet if you can walk 400 yards.
Although this is clear on the fliers I must write something similar on the website.
Oh by the way the
website
is constantly being updated with more artist info so keep an eye on it.
Another point while I'm chatting. If you have nmade links to Miskin on your site it would help if they pointed to the main title page as there is lots of info there that I don't repeat every year, also access to old pictures that you would not know about if you came in the back door. Ta
See you all soon.

Well I've been back to 2003 and ALL the sound bites on Miskin site have the WMA extension. They play fine in Windows Media Player and Real Time. I would have thought that if you are used to using non windows O.S. then you will have found a way of opening these files on your system.

The three Tarrantella clips are suffering from "missing link syndrome" they will be back d'reklee.
If there is a link to someone elses site then obviously I have no control over the format used therein.

Best come to Miskin and hear the real thing anyway.

Andy

So where are all these new media player clips then Andy. The ones that came up were in winamp (thought winamp was mp3) The ones that didn't come up were the three on Taranttella. What am I missing? And we are really looking forward to joining in with all the fun of the Miskin Fair. Can't wait. Coming early, leaving late.

I didn't try any of the sound bites, but if they're Windows WMA they'll only work on Windows.

MP3 is a much more universal though it's still somewhat proprietary, and
Ogg Vorbis, though less well known, is the really free alternative. (but many media players support it)

Lynne: the sound bites are in windows wma format and ought to just work!!! I've checked them all on Jillies puter.

Anyone else: are there others who can't hear sound? Do let me know, especially if you know the answer!!!!
Just so we all look at the same place, one of the recent files is at the bottom of Chris Kings page "Where do you Lie"
Any comments about missing links are always useful, the site has grown so much over the years it is difficult to check every page.
Thanks,
Andy

The Windsor Hotel, Pontyclun will do B&B, that's about a mile away. There's a hotel whose name escapes me at Tya Garw, that's an extra half mile but it is handy for the superb Boar's head PH. The Cross Inn at Cross Inn does B&B too, that's about a mile and a half.

B & Bs are few and far between in our neck of the woods. But bearing in mind we are talking communal indoor camping over the weekend I have quite a bit of floor space in my house only very short walk from club. It will be full of festival stuff and VERY untidy but it beats sleeping in the rain. I will look into the B7 B situation as well so I'm not too crowded

The current world record holder for long distance Morris is our own Jim Bartlett of Bridgend, who is the fool for Cardiff Morris, and a very fine songwriter to boot. I believe he set the current record in the late 70s, and a very young Ben Dauncey accompanied him for some of the way, his father being Jim's musician for the duration.

See you all at Miskin.

Right then.. This years charity will be a splendid event re-enacting Kemps Jig.
Between 15th and 21st April 2006 Ben Dauncey will Attempt to Dance from Tunbridge Wells to Worcester, a distance of over 210 miles to establish a new world record for Morris Dancing and to raise £100,000 for two national charities.
Multiple Sclerosis and Make a Wish
MS is unfortunately all too common and most people will know someone affected by it.
Make a Wish are an amazing bunch whose simple aim is the "Granting wishes of children and young people aged 3 to 17 living with life-threatening diseases"

pop over to http://www.nextfootup.com/ for more details.

Two very appropriate causes for us to help with over Easter.

Gentle? At Miskin? You MUST be joking! Make sure you sharpen your elbow for the scrum at the bar.

I adore Miskin - it's my favourite festival and sets me up for the festival season.

yus Dave, I have three computers here that variously and without notice may or may not co-operate. I often have to rely on mail2web to get my emails though. I also have no newsgroup access due to an ongoing problem with Wight cable. Which reminds me I put an appeal on a new thread last night for information about a fundraiser. This is a re enactment of Kemps Morris dance from, I think Cantebury to Norwich, over Easter, to raise money for a medical charity. I need to find out more about this.
Cheers Dave, and all.

From what I gather, Gosport and Fareham must be a very different festival from Miskin.

Mary and I wrote to them recently to see if there was any chance of a booking and we got a very curt "we're only looking for NAMES" type of reply.

(that was before we knew we'd be at Miskin the same weekend, or we probably woudn't have even bothered)

It's a shame Miskin always clashes with the Gosport & Fareham Festival at Easter as I always go to the latter.

Perhaps someone could split Easter in two so I can attend both?

Mary,
The BBC Folk Club doesn't advertise by agreement between Frank Hennessy and the Social Club (Nigel will fill in the detail I'm sure) so no web links. It's an anything goes club, and I know that you and Anahata will be made very welcome, as would any visiting singer. Frank and the Hennessy's host it and top and tail the evening.
It doesn't come across on his radio show, but Frank is a very entertaining host, seemingly improvising hilarious stories on the spot, sparking off from a previous song or any minor occurence.
Don't forget there's also Gower Folk club on Sunday, Llantrisant on Wednesday and Newport on Thursday. And we'll still have enough energy for 4 days of Miskin.

Sployy Man

Anyone arriving in S.Wales during the preceding week should consider a visit to the BBC Club folk night which is held 2nd Tuesday of each month (usually!). I'll confirm closer to the time.

Yes, as reported earlier, SussexCarole and I are getting married "A week before Easter" and will still be celebriated by Miskin. We've just starting preparing the Sloe Gin for the wedding toast. It's "open invite" to anyone who'd like to join us at Llangennith village hall on Saturday 8th April, and we'll arrange evening singarounds throughout the week for those who are staying on for Miskin. Watch for a thread giving all details later, when we have some idea what we're doing.

All the best,
Andrew

Hello all,
thought I'd get the ball rolling this year and start the thread. The website www.miskinfolk.co.uk is updated at last. Emails have gone out to most of our regular guests and as they reply their names will be added to the confirmed guest list. Eyelander and I have not had a very festivally year unfortunately, but we are now almost back in full swing. We intend to be at Mudgather at Banbury, see you all there?
