Subject: The Anti Iraq War Movement Needs a Song From: LadyJean Date: 23 Sep 05 - 01:11 AM I went down to Flagstaff Hill two weeks ago to hear Cindy Sheehan speak, and march to the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial with her and a few hundred others. One of the people I was with, a veteran of the 60s, remarked that we needed a song like "1, 2, 3, 4 What Are We Fighting For?" Sounds like a plan to me, so I thought I'd post it on the mudcat and see what the catters could come up with. |

Subject: RE: The Anti Iraq War Movement Needs a Song From: GUEST,Rikki Tikki Date: 23 Sep 05 - 01:44 PM A start has been made. Check out http://www.mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=79667#1454579 It contains a bunch of anti-Bush and anti-war songs by mudcatters, plus some outside goodies from Yikes McGee, Peggy Seeger and so on. It also has links to earlier anti-Bush song threads. Granted most of these are more anti songs than pro. But among them you may find something that could apply. And after all, Country Joe's "Fixin' To Die Rag" was anti, too. There ought to be some way to link together all the Peace, Anti-War, etc. songs pertaining to the current Iraq/imperial war situation so we all don't have to scramble to find them. I'd like to see this musical anti-war effort grow and develop some consciousness of its own strength. |

Subject: RE: The Anti Iraq War Movement Needs a Song From: reggie miles Date: 29 Sep 05 - 08:58 AM Try this one out for size. Cold, Cold Wind Reggie Miles © 2005 It's a cold, cold wind that blows no good An evil seed growin' in the neighborhood With a twisted soul, and tortured mind And no love for his own kind Too blind to see the things he should Only the sound of gold ringing in his ears Drowning out the cries of those whose lives are filled with tears His deaf and dumb predisposition Gives me a strong suspicion Avarice is his sole mission around here With every word he tries to convolute Nothing is so sacred that his lies will not pollute Disinformation is his tool Playin' everybody for the fool Is his only golden rule absolute Have you felt the darkness spread, Or heard the truth subverted by what he said? A glad hand and a smile Is his deceptive style All the while he's a wishin' you were dead Have you seen that war mongerin' man? Have you seen the fruits of his labor across this land? Have you ever wondered why? He'll kiss your baby then spit in your eye. It's all a part of his master plan |
Subject: RE: The Anti Iraq War Movement Needs a Song From: GUEST,Scabby Douglas Date: 29 Sep 05 - 10:53 AM Notes about "Give Him Time" A young boy named Ali Abbas became a media pet when his family was killed, and he lost both arms during the Allied bombardment of Baghdad. He subsequently was flown to the UK for treatment, and was given prosthetic limbs. When he appeared on television screens across the world, he was inundated with gifts from well-wishers. What made me write this song was hearing that he had been sent a Playstation. Just what you need when you have no hands. The "God Willing" line came from his ucle and the boy himself whenever they were quoted, they would always add "God Willing". Give Him Time Steven Clark There's a boy out playing on a street Could be yours, God help us, could be mine Having too much fun to come inside and eat Give him time, God willing give him time The boy has dreams he doesn't like to tell Could be yours, God help us, could be mine He'll be a doctor, make the sick folk well Give him time, God willing give him time Came the missiles, came the aeroplanes Could be yours, God help us, could be mine And hidden hands unleashed a fiery rain Give him time, God willing give him time The boy is lyin on a hospital bed Could be yours, God help us, could be mine Doctor says that he'd be better dead Give him time, God willing give him time Across the world he's on the TV screens Could be yours, God help us, could be mine Folk send him gifts and money to wipe their conscience clean Give him time, God willing give him time The boy has toys and games he just can't wait to play Could be yours, God help us, could be mine It's so much harder since we burned his arms away Give him time, God willing give him time So when they call for war to end a tyrant's reign Could be yours, God help us, could be mine Just ask who wins and loses, and what they stand to gain Give him time, God willing give him time Give him time, God willing give him time |

Subject: RE: The Anti Iraq War Movement Needs a Song From: GUEST,Rikki Tikki Date: 01 Oct 05 - 08:07 AM Seems as if the pro-Bush dirty tricks crowd has found this link, as it has found others. My advice: look behind the huge, menacing, leering image. There's a little man with big ears behind the curtain wiggling the gears on behalf of himself and his greedy friends. Our cause is right, and just, and the right wing radicals' attempt to juice up the War Industry, glut the military-industrial complex, turn our nation into a police state, steal everything that's not nailed down, and basically torpedo America and everything it stands for, is WRONG -- And underneath all the jeering, the lies and the self-justifying rhetoric, THEY KNOW IT. Keep singing against the Bush Machine. Rikki Tikki |
Subject: RE: The Anti Iraq War Movement Needs a Song From: GUEST,what about Dylan? Date: 11 Oct 05 - 01:02 AM Seems to me that the moral authority that stopped the Vietnam war was founded upon a message of universal quality: make love not war. Things reached a point where people became nostalgic for peace. The message was so focused and clear that it united a majority of the country, both demonstrators and non-demonstrators alike. I don't think we've reached that point yet with Iraq. Not enough troops have been killed and this is a mercenary army without a draft to connect every day citizens to the fighting. (Though we may reach a tipping point at 2000. That seems to be a rather astounding number.) Furthermore, the threat of terrorism keeps people sufficiently afraid so that living in a constant state of war is preferable to the idea of inaction because then it at least shows that we're DOING something. ANYWAY, if anyone can write a song about it, Bob Dylan can. I think he has one good one in him left. |
Subject: RE: The Anti Iraq War Movement Needs a Song From: GUEST,Sue Date: 11 Oct 05 - 02:46 AM Cathryn Craig and Brian Willoughby wrote and launched "Rumours of Rain" to help raise money for the war's injured children. Many well known artists from the UK and USA joined on the recording, including Martin Carthy, Nanci Griffith, Ralph McTell, and Tom Paxton Please see their website: Rumours of Rain Rumours of Rain Craig/Willoughby(SGO) Peace for all people amen Rumours of rain better batten down the hatches Pray it won't fall like those years ago When the storm it was raging for so many days Rumours of rain, rumours of rain Rumours of rain try to fortify the fences Bring in the dog and the lamb and the sheep Huddle together too scared to sleep Wait for the rain, wait for the rain, wait for the rain Peace for all people amen The hurricane forces will soon be upon us The wind blows so hard that with wings we could fly Higher than heaven to where there's no pain Where there's no pain, where there's no pain Almighty powers that be I'm begging you for your mercy Don't let the lightning strike me....please Peace for all people amen My wife and my children are gathering their good-byes Carefully chosen for leaving in haste Cause the rest will be dust in a covered up cave After the rain, after the rain Peace for all people amen Cheers Sue |
Subject: RE: The Anti Iraq War Movement Needs a Song From: harpmolly Date: 11 Oct 05 - 10:31 PM Dougie Maclean's "War" still fits--I think it was written for the original Gulf War. The really creepy thing is that the lyrics could apply to either side of the conflict. And the melody is this incredibly gentle, beautiful one. *** WAR Her voice made silent Her hands made still But deep and violent Wait the ones who wait to kill; The desert's burning Their reasons pale For there's no returning With some golden holy grail. What have they done? What have they done? The blood will run to everyone... Oh, what have they done? Is it for freedom, is it for truth, That fathers fall And all those young men trade their youth? Or are they moved by deception's hand, That rank and reckless Scatters death across the sand? What have they done? What have they done? The blood will run to everyone... Oh, what have they done? Is it for freedom, is it for truth, That fathers fall And all those young men trade their youth? The desert's burning Their reasons pale For there's no returning With some golden holy grail. What have they done? What have they done? The blood will run to everyone... Oh, what have they done? *** *sigh* Molly |

Subject: RE: The Anti Iraq War Movement Needs a Song From: Commander Crabbe Date: 12 Oct 05 - 07:42 PM How about this from the pen of John Wrightson. Some of the lyrics ain't quite right as he sings it a bit fast and in a northeast accent but it is mostly verbatim W. O. M. D. Chorus Well we rattled our sabres and polished our guns. The year was 2003. We searched and we looked and found everything but. W O M D We found whisky and water, brandy and wine Coffee and Indian tea. Domestos and duck was the nearest we got. To W O M D We dug up the desert and sifted the sand Cities were combed as well as the land Found plenty of oil, donkeys and cats, Uniforms with fez type hats Camels and goats and cows and sheep, piles of **** in every street. We turned every stone, opened all doors, but couldn't find what we came here for. We scoured the country still looking for clues the roads were littered with sandals and shoes. We saw many locals go wandering past, shaking their heads when questions were asked (Terry white towels and dirty rush macs???) we even found Shergar settled out back Saw busses and lorries and taxis on hire but none of them carrying what we require. Just lookin about was making us blind, the haystack needle was easier to find. We've checked every corner and nothings been missed, I'm starting to think it doesn't exist. We've covered the mountains, caves and holes, our eye in the sky is mission control. No signs of W O M D, they must have buried it out at sea. We rattled our sabres and polished our guns. The year was 2003. We searched and we looked and found everything but. W O M D All the whisky and water, brandy and wine Coffee and Indian tea. We gave it all back to the land that we racked.
