It's beyond belief. Arty McGlynn will be playing at the Old Library, Mansfield, on Thursday 12 October. I'd pay £50 and travel 150 miles to see this guy, yet he's coming to my own doorstep, and tickets are a mere £6.50. McGlynn is without doubt the finest guitarist ever to come out of Ireland, and must be up there among the world's best.

As if McGlynn on his own is not enough, he will be appearing with the exceptional fiddler and singer Nollaig Casey, who is his wife. Tickets can be booked via Nottingham Playhouse box office (0115 941 9419).

What brings me crashing back to earth about all this is that I won't be able to go! I'm setting off on Wednesday for three weeks in Bosnia.

I will however be able to catch Brian Willoughby at the same venue on 3 November, when he will be performing, as usual these days, with Cathryn Craig. Willoughby was lead guitarist with the Strawbs for donkeys' years.

I've no idea what it is with Masfield Old Library and outstanding guitarists, but long may it continue.

roughly what style are we talking about

I've got a bread and butter gig, but I'll try and rearrange if he is say within spitting distance of the late Eric Roche, the best Irish guitarist I ever saw.

That is almost right on my door step too, so what's he like??

I've played a gig at the Library Theatre before, it's a small venue, but comfortable.
I'd get your tickets in quick if I were you!

muppitz x

Recently he's been touring with the one and only Liam O'Flynn, the legendary uilleann piper with Planxty. He's also done several tours with Van the Man and has played with pop/rock luminaries like Elton John. He's a decent guy and an exceptional musician.

Weelittledrummer, it's fair to say that these two are likely to include some jigs and reels in their set. I don't know what kind of songs Nollaig Casey sings, but again her name is well-known in Irish trad circles. (I think she's played fiddle for Riverdance etc.) If you've ever heard Mudcat's Brendy, you'd know what style to expect from Arty McGlynn. Arty is even more accomplished, which is saying something.

Well this deserves to be refreshed, even from the back of a pokey computer in downtown Prijedor, where I am reliving the experience of a Pentium 4 processor and slow connection. It's worth making a long trip to catch Arty, unless he's playing some venue nearer you - it's just not quite worth travelling back for from Bosnia-Hercegovina.

Saw Arty and Nollaig (THE GODDESS!) several times. She's one of the best Irish fiddlers around and has begun to sing a bit in recent years (style reminiscent of Altan's singer), and he just kicks ass up and down the fretboard, both picking tunes and accompanying. They're both alumni of several Donal Lunny projects, and Arty was in Patrick Street as well.

DO NOT MISS!!

Cheers,
Michael

Arty McGlynn plays traditional tunes and contemporary tunes on an electric guitar. Re Nollaig Casey, as an example of the musical family heritage, Ms Casey is also the sister of that brilliant irish harpist Maire Ni Chathasaigh, who in her own right is the partner of another brilliant guitarist called Chris Newman.
