What is the origin of this word and why would you wish to jump on one?

Literally, a bandwagon is a wagon that carries the band in a parade. Riding on the bandwagon is popular since one can enjoy the music, conveniently without walking. The phrase "jumping on the bandwagon" is therefore used in the sense of "joining an increasingly popular trend".

The above explanation from the following site.

Is this a new concept in threads ie you pose a question and then answer it yourself almost immediately?

It could catch on. Could even be the next bandwagon.

What's the next bandwagon?

The Spectator runs a column entitled 'Banned Wagon, a cataloge of things our leaders wish to ban', which normally highlights the latest excesses of political correctness.

Admitttly, it's unlikly that many of the regular contributors to the Mudcat would see this, as the Spectator is almost the official magazine of the Conservative Party, and not quite in line with the views of most of the people here.

Interesting to mention The Spectator right now, with the Dylan Special running currently. i.e 'No Direction Home' ... ;o)

As someone who actually writes the bollocks that politicians come out with, I can tell you that despite the fact being accused of 'jumping on the bandwagon' is a term used to deride (pardon the pun), only a fool would stand and watch it go by.

The Band Wagon was a terrific 1953 musical directed by Vincente Minelli. Stars were an aging Fred Astaire, Nanette Fabray, Oscar Levant, and Cyd Charisse. It's one of my favorite Astaire musicals.

The photo in following link show a bandwagon waving the Union Jack (or more correctly The Union Flag)..
http://www.december.com/places/mke/images/bandwago.jpg

I have the impression that this bandwagon idea was a U.S. thing or at least not a British one. Any explanation for the flags in this this photo?
