Anyone have the words for this song? I've found references to the papers of I.G. Greer, a professor at Appalachian State who was also a song collecter that include "The Death of the Infidel's Daughter" and references to a recording of Infidel's Daughter by the Sego Brothers and Naomi but no words.

I received this request from a gentleman who remembers his mother singing this song and I have exhausted my sources. Mudcat is the final hope.

Peace, thanks for the help. I will pass this site along. It looks like the only way to find the words.   Well there is another possibility. I have access to hundreds of old gospel songbooks with indexes in a notebook. If I had a couple of days to go through the indexes I might find it.

I am trying to purchase a scanner with Laserfiche software for the archive and if successful this software will index the pages as they are scanned and we will see if we have it in the archive.

The Roud Folk Song Index currently lists one example only; no Roud number, so presumably not seen.

The Infidel's Daughter (first line, Father I am surely dying)

Virginia Folklore Soc. Coll. (Univ. Virginia, Charlotteville)

(Details from Arthur Kyle Davis, Folk-Songs of Virginia: A Descriptive Index and Classification of Material Collected under the Auspices of the Virginia Folklore Society.. Durham: Duke University Press, 1949 (rep. New York: AMS Press, Inc., 1965) p.299)

Performer: Mrs Hazel Collins, Salem, Virginia, USA, 25 July 1935.

Collector: Alfreda M Peel

Text only. The book, as a descriptive index, may not quote the full text; but I haven't seen it. I think it was again reprinted in 1998 by Pelican Press.

The Virginia Folklore Society website is at http://faculty.virginia.edu/vafolk/public.htm.

Malcolm, thanks. We may have Davis' book in the archive at work. I'll also check the Virginia website.

The page GUEST shows actually has a typewritten version of the song on it; I'm too tired right now to screenshot it and run it through Pizmo, but maybe someone else will.

Oho, and here it is on YouTube, sung by the Sego Brothers and Naomi!

The recording from Sego and Naomi is now online. The lyrics are similar but not exactly the same.

Listen to the Sego and Naomi version here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIfBF2m3R6E

CHORUS
Father, I am surely dying, fainter and fainter grows my breath
Oh, those sharp pain, oh my father, can it mean that they are dead

Father I have trusted in you, I believed as you believed
I have never, never doubted, but I have been so deceived
This creed here that we have followed may be alright to live by
But I really can't believe it now that I have come to die

CHORUS

Can it mean that I am dying, going with the lost to to dwell
Oh, my father, oh I bid you, tell me that there was no hell

----------

Additional lines from the App State document, with slight corrections for assumed typos:

Oh my father, don't believe it, Oh I see the fiery flame
Father when I am in torment don't forget you're to blame
Just remember what I've told you, Oh I know that it is hell
I can hear the lost ones wailing, and I am going there to dwell

In the years to come remember, that through you my soul was damned
It will be brought up against you, at judgment as you stand
Now goodbye for I am dying, going with the lost to dwell
May this prove to you a warning, God forgive you now farewell

Oh, and perhaps (or perhaps not) related, a novel mentioned in A Dictionary of American Authors (available on archive.org):

"Dayton. Amos Cooper. N. J.. 1813-1865. A Baptist clergyman and physician of Tennessee, whose novel Theodosia, or the Heroine of Faith, was very popular. His other works comprise The Infidel's Daughter, a novel ; Baptist Facts and Methodist Fiction ; Baptist Question Book ; Children brought to Christ; Pedobaptist and Campbellite Immersion."
