Well he's back and dipping his toe in the water with a gig this Sunday 2nd October at Bothy Folk Club Southport.
Cheers

I'm not sure about the level of gigging he is doing. Last year he was persuaded to do an extended floor spot for us, and a spot at 'Ormskirk Comes Alive', now 'the gig'.

I've kept in touch with Pete over all the years he's been back teaching full-time, trying to persuade him to do the odd gig, but he's just so self-effacing and it was the pressure of touring and being apart from his family that made him relinquish the road, back in the early '80s. This was after the brilliant "Awkward Age" album was starting to break big - he kinda did a Shelagh McDonald and turned his back - but at least we knew where he was! (unlike Shelagh)
Then about 3 years back at Chorley Festival he just turned up in a Singaround I was running and I've been back to active nagging ever since! The results can be seen at the Bothy tomorrow night. The voice and guitar (and the teeth and most of the hair) are all intact!
A night to remember, I feel, is on the cards.

Thanks for reminding me ;-) I used to love "Africa '65", but hadn't heard it for ages. So, I went and dug out the LP, and I still love it.

I sure wish I could come and hear him (never have), but I'm afraid it's a bit too far to travel..

Have a great time, anybody who's going!

Bente

Pete didn't "just" turn up Clive. Tim Laycock was staying with me for the FOur Fools festival and the conversation at home turned to Pete. I have a tape of a gig that Tim and Pete did at Ormskirk in the early 80's and we thought as we were both at this festival and Pete wasn't that far away we rang him up to see if he wanted to come along for the day. We left it at that and he "just" turned up co-incidentally at the "meet Tim Laycock and Mark Dowding" spot that you were MCing in your own inimitable style. You "persuaded" Pete to give us a couple of songs and it was like the clock turning back. I've sung his songs for years and still do and I shall be there on Sunday!

Cheers
Mark

Sorry Mark - the old brain cells are decreasing in number on an hourly basis - that was the way I remembered it - I'd no wish to overlook your own part in the scheme of things! I'd forgotten too, that Tim was along that day - oh dear (should only open mouth to change feet!)
I guess that's why my style is inimitable - you wouldn't want others actually copying that sort of thing!!!!!!! See ya later.

June Tabors' version of Joe Peel is just about my favourite folk song.

It's so intense that sometimes I can't listen to the whole song.

A lovely song written by someone who must be a lovely man....Ake

A memorable night and Pete really hit his stride during the second half. His brother, Trevor was down from the North-East and did one number too. They encored together with Buck Owens' "Crying Time." Congrats on your good taste, all of you at the Bothy last night. Hope to line up interview with him for Living Tradition, when he's ready. Stay tuned!
Steady now, all this might go to his head!

Did a sailing trip with Trevor a while back. Never met Peter, but if he's as nice a guy as his brother, he must be a diamond geezer.

Really disappointed to have to missed last night, would have gladly have driven over from west Yorks to see Peter again after all these years but sadly my good lady was poorly and couldn't make it. Thought it might be a good night Peter was always a consumate performer, hopefully he'll do some more gigs in the not too distant future

It was a great night. Plenty of people in to see Peter and we were all singing along to the songs - mainly the old favourites but a couple of "new" ones as well ("New" in the sense that Peter wrote them not long before he stopped performing and hadn't had chance to record them or play them very often). It was like the clock had wound back 20 years. Looking forward to seeing more of Peter at a folk club just round the corner from you in the near future.
Thanks for persuading him to do the booking Clive (and thanks for the floor spot!).

Cheers
Mark

He'd be so chuffed and so bashful too, at seeing all these tributes. I shouldn't think he's a Mudcatter, so Mark, print 'em off and take 'em round or I'll bundle 'em up and post off! Thanx again for the floorspot Mark - we WON'T let it get to 2008 before agreeing terms

Just to say thanks for the warm welcome. I know Pete was really pleased with the reception. You can be sure I will pass on all these comments to him.It was a great night.
