Cluin... except for the fiasco Saturday night (8-0 loss to the Sens), Belfour is doing decent. Biggest problem is that Toronto only have two defencement to speak of (McCabe and Kaberle). The performance level of the others on their "D" drops off tremendously compared to those two... The guys are looking decent up front (Mats Sundin to come back either Saturday *likely* or Sunday), but will need some more quality in the rear guard to have any chance of making it beyond, say, one round of the playoffs... but irregardless..

GO TORONTO! WE GOTTA BE-LEAF!

Hey Beer,

Bummer, man! Wings lost to the Oilies 4-3 in OT. My worst nightmare is coming true. Legace's hurt and Chris "I couldn't stop a beachball" Osgood is in the nets for the Wings again. I was soooooo happy when they got rid of him before. He makes lots of spectacular saves, just never when they mean anything. Onward and upward!

Had a bad feeling about this game before it started last night. I listened to the first two periods and then went to bed. Again not feeling good about how the Wings were playing. The wings didn't deserve to win and they didn't.

"Jacques Demers is illiterate???"

The horrible truth about illiteracy in Canada and the US is this: The bullshit about literacy rates being 99% is just that--bullshit. The figure is arrived at by counting newspapers sold per capita. Fact is that the North American illiteracy rate is nowhere near that.

"The 2003 ALL survey measured the literacy skills of adults in seven countries, including Canada, and found that four in 10 Canadian adults lack the literacy skills that are required for most everyday reading requirements. Canada's youth aged 16-25 generally performed better than older Canadians, however, after their parents' education was taken into account, the survey showed a decline in literacy scores of youth between 1994 and 2003."

Sorry to post something so bloody shameful on the hockey site.

Leafs handled Tampa Bay decently last night, and Sundin is back in good form. "The New NHL" is better without the red line but there are still too many stoppages due to insignificant penalties. I can't however believe that stick infractions are down as blood was drawn twice last night.

Peace, Mooh.

Mooh I don't follow every team. Early on The Senators were getting a lot of obstruction penalties. Hasek was bailing them out with acrobatic goaltending. Now they have embraced the new rules and are winning games with scores like 10-4, 6-0. I think by December, as teams learn not to grab and as they emphasize speed and talent, we will have very fast very exciting hockey with lots of shots and some young quick goalies becoming big stars.

That should be true if they can keep "care and control" of their sticks.

Aside...Belfour took a stupid slashing penalty last night. When goalies resort to that it usually means the defence is asleep at the wheel.

Peace, Mooh.

Mooh,

I have to disagree with you about the defence being asleep at the wheel. I think that they are handcuffed by the rules. I don't like this one. While I think that forwards were often mugged by denfencemen in the past, they are now untouchable in front of the net. I think that the D should at least be able to try to move them out of there and to tie up their sticks. Eddie was sending a message to make the forwards think twice about trying to screen him. Nice to see Mats back.

Steve...Maybe, but better to get physical in the crease than some stupid slash or high stick infraction. I agree that the D should be able to get the Fs outa there, but they weren't, and that drove the G to take a penalty. It sucks. Maybe things will smooth out by mid-season, mabe not.

Fwiw...I still think there are too many striped shirts on the ice, the ice is too small, shootouts suck, and the Leafs rule. (Ain't a fantasy life grand?)

Peace, Mooh.

Peace, the teams' schedules are all at NHL.com. There is live radio for each game at that site also, as well as OLN TV schedules for US viewers, and links to each team's site. From the individual team site, you can usually find the local radio station that carries live audio... better sound quality than the radio feed via NHL.com (tho the NHL radio is archived about 24 hours). Thus, you can see if your team's local radio coverage streams-- mine does, and most others, I bet. In the case of Pittsburgh and other teams, there also is regional TV coverage of some games via Fox Sports, in addition to the OLN TV coverage.

bobad...Yeah, well, whatever it takes I guess. I love hockey but they're all nut cases, especially goalies, many are superstitious too. Let's all just stand in front of large hard rubber projectiles shall we, while standing on ice no less. Padding be damned, 100 miles an hour makes me wince.

But in my little boy fantasy life I'm Jacques Plante (in the Laughs...um...Leafs days) and you're Boom Boom. Hey, I called Plante first, you can be Gump. How I loved being a road hockey hero!

Re: hockey on radio. It's amazing how differently the local play-callers call the game.

First, you REALLY need them to tell you which goalie is to their right and left as they view the game.

Second, you need to know the names of the players on your team. Never mind what position they play-- that will come-- but you can't tell WHAT the heck the caller is telling you unless you know your own guys. (We kept the team list handy the first few games-- been a LONG time out of the game for us.)

Third, the pregame show is actually really helpful to ghave an idea what some of the unfolding events will signify, especially if you are just getting into radio hockey.

Fourth, LISTEN to the crowd noises. You can hear from the crowd's tone whether the home or the visiting team is doing somehting interesting, and this helps when the caller isn't clear. This will help you sort out your team's offense from its defensive action when the caller gets tongue-tied or you don't know the games. Also listen for the hitting on the boards and the glass. You get so you can tell the diff between parts of the rink, just by the sound. Hearing the sound of players squabbling over a puck on the boards is helpful when the caller stops talking cuz there's nothing big to relay.

Sometimes the caller will stop describing action-- it's for sure that the players aren't just standing around scratching each other's nuts! Often, it's a player back by the net with the puck, trying to see how his offensive line is looking, up ice, fidgeting the puck back and forth till a likely play forms up with the line.

Our team's play caller doesn't tell us when people go on and off the ice, or who is in each offensive line, or what exactly some miscreant did that caused a penalty whistle. I hope yours does!

The first game or two or three via radio will probably seem like nonsense. I would urge you, hang in for a few more games anyway. Turn the lights low and sit back and relax-- soon you will see pictures of what is described. And it beats a lot of other ways of wasting time, too!

Scuse the typos,

~Susan

Are you knew to hockey Susan? I've never had the problems that you are referring to. Maybe it's the Blackhawks broadcasters. A good part of the fun in listening instead of watching is that you form a picture in your mind and make things up to your liking ( especially when your team scores).
There was some musician who once said that he didn't put his songs on video because it would take away from a persons imagination. Or something like that.
