here is the origin of Detroit's name, and logo...

The Red Wings were called the Cougars until 1932, when a millionaire named James Norris bought the team. Here's the rest of the story, as told by Bob Duff in "Total Hockey: The Official Encyclopedia of the National Hockey League:"

"Norris had been a member of the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association, a sporting club with cycling roots. The MAAA's teams were known by their club emblem and these Winged Wheelers were the first winners of the Stanley Cup in 1893. Norris decided that a version of their logo was perfect for a team playing in the Motor City and on October 5, 1932 the club was renamed the Red Wings."

Subject: Hockey Joy Is....
From: wysiwyg
Date: 01 Dec 05 - 12:09 AM

Hockey Joy is that indescribably peaceful reaction when your team is winning on the eve of your 5th housefire anniversary; on the same day you have been acutely remembering a close friend's death because you've JUST delivered his stories to his widow after a week immersed in them retyping and proofing, and she stopped by to say a thank-you; on the same day another very old dear friend has been SO ALIVE (after a stroke everyone thought had extinguished him); and on the same day your sister suddenly wants to talk about your mom's "Terri Schiavo Plan" and how your brother wants to fight her; and on the same day your mom is fine and just wants to know that we love her and that we aren't going to have a fight about her plan-- or MAKE her stay after she's DONE with everything she ever wanted to do or committed to doing and can REST....

...that feeling when, on such a day, your team actually holds on for the win instead of pissing it away on that day when you've seen to all these other really important things...

...and when someone you love a whole lot is there incredulously enjoying the game with you, PLUS your sweet, really big, heavy dog is fast asleep and warmly relaxed all over your lap in a big recliner.... and you have comfortably found space for THREE whole beers!

... and then Khabibulin makes a BUNCH of neat saves and you can SEE them on the RADIO!

Gawldang, Hawks, GO! :~)

Man, we need McCarthy back here to get rid of those "Reds", heheh

but seriously folks... whassup with the big Boston trade? tossing away Joey Thorton for a dirty hockey sock and a bag of pucks??? Okay, that isn't being fair to Sturm, Strang, and Primeau, especially since they knocked off the Sens last night, and the first two got three points for the B's. But still -- seems a little crazy from the outside looking in.

Oh, and last night...
Toronto - shut out win! yay!
Ottawa - Loses to the B's, yay!
Montreal - blows a 2-0 lead, loses in O/T! yay!

I just don't understand the scheduling. It was my understanding that the LLeague was divided in two. East and West. Detroit being placed in the West. Not playing Montreal,Toronto, Boston and so on. When the play-off arrive then the top two teams will go for the cup. East against the West.
The ?? is: How come Ottawa is playing Vancouver tonight out West????

Beer, this is how the NHL explains it:

NHL SCHEDULE FEATURES
RIVALRY-BASED FORMAT

NEW YORK (July 22, 2005) - The National Hockey League is returning with an exciting new regular-season schedule format that emphasizes division rivalries.

Format

    * Each club will play eight games against each of its four division rivals (32 total).

    * Each club will play four games against each of the 10 non-division clubs in its conference (40 total).

    * Each club will play 10 inter-conference games, hosting one game each against all five clubs from a designated division and traveling for one game each against all five clubs from a different division. For the 2005-06 season, Northeast Division clubs will host the Pacific Division and visit the Northwest; Atlantic Division clubs will host the Northwest and visit the Central; and Southeast Division clubs will host the Central and visit the Pacific. Division vs. division assignments will rotate annually.

Features

    * The new schedule strengthens division rivalries; division rivals played each other six times under the previous schedule.

    * The new schedule maintains integrity of the conference-based playoff format; each club continues to play 40 games against non-division, intra-conference opponents.

    * The new schedule allows for continued exposure of teams and star players from the other conference.

    * The new schedule allows for more compelling television matchups, thanks to the combination of stronger division rivalries with continued intra- and inter-conference play.

So far so good.

The Dominator is the best goalie in the game statistically and the Sens have more goals for and fewer goals against than anyone. Ottawa is tied with the Ranger for first with 44 points but they have 5 games in hand.

Yeah JtS but they are starting to get hit with injuries to key players. I guess that goes with the territory but it's screwing up their line configurations and when the top scoring line slumps there isn't another taking up the slack.

Well, the Flames ain't doing so bad. 2nd overall in the west, and I think 4th overall in the league. Only 6 points behind the Senators. Kiprisoff's goaltending earning him defensive player of the week honours. They're in for the long haul.

On a mullet-related note - Gretzky will not force the Canadian Olympic team players to get Haircuts .

Penguins fire Olczyk, promote former Canadiens coach Therrien (from Baby Penguins)

It makes sense to me.... Olczyk has been calling up player after player from the Baby Penguins, so it's only right that the management calls up their coach, too.

The Penguins were a league-worst 23-47-8-4 during Olczyk's first season as coach in 2003-04, including an 18-game losing streak that would be an NHL record except that one loss came in overtime. But the pressure on Olczyk to begin winning increased when the Penguins won the NHL draft lottery in July and chose 18-year-old Sidney Crosby, considered Canada's best prospect since Penguins owner-player Mario Lemieux.

Therrien, who coached the Penguins' Wilkes-Barre/Scranton farm club to a 21-1-2-1 record that represents the best start in AHL history, was to run the team's practice Thursday and coach his first NHL game since the 2002-03 season Friday night against Buffalo. He was 77-77-13-13 as Montreal's coach from 2000-03.

The 42-year-old Therrien expected to bring a much more disciplined approach to a team that has been criticized for its lazy work habits and inability to stick to a system. He emphasizes controlling the puck and creating turnovers in the transition game.

So.... I spent some time the last few days looking at the UHL, AHL, and ECHL.... apparently there is a USHL too.... plus the various European leagues... a lot to sort out. But do any or all of those leagues play the "new NHL" rules? In other words, if a player is "called up" to an NHL opportunity from the monirs or the foreign leagues, are they already accustoimed to the new NHL rules and rink measurements, or do they have to adjust to that when they arrive?

That sort of behaviour is totally inexcusable and reprehensible and goes to show that the Brits don't have a monopoly on loutish sports fans. One would have have thought that blatant racism was a thing of the past but it seems to be alive and well in Chicoutimi. It would be interesting to know if these were kids or adults. This makes me ashamed of my home province.

Commissioner reacts to events which occurred last Friday in Chicoutimi
2005-12-19

BOUCHERVILLE, Monday, December 19, 2005 (QMJHL) – The Commissioner of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, Mr. Gilles Courteau, issued a statement following the disgraceful gestures and comments directed towards Moncton Wildcats Head Coach Ted Nolan that took place during and after the game in Chicoutimi last Friday night.

Even though no formal complaint was lodge at the QMJHL, the Commissioner finds disgraceful the behaviour of a group of isolated individuals: "I find the events which occurred last Friday in Chicoutimi regrettable. The distasteful and disgraceful gestures and comments aimed at Head Coach Ted Nolan by an isolated group of spectators in no way represent the image of the Saguenéens organization, their players or the fans that attend QMJHL games."
