I heard this song years ago - probably 30 year ago. They played it every day in the coffee house at university. But I never knew who wrote it. It's a lovely upbeat feminist ballad (sung by male voices) about a woman leaving her husband and kids to make a life for herself. Here's what I remember of the lyrics, filtered through many years. If anyone can identify please reply. thanks

Alice Adams lived in Provost(?) Utah,
With two kids and a husband name of Joe
They've been married 5 years come October
Life in Provost Utah's kinda slow
Joey owned the hardware store in Provost
Liked his meals at 7 and on time
Pipe and slippers waiting by his rocker
And his wife and tv both turned on by 9

Alice A was quite a girl in college
Edited the paper and the mag
All of that was changed when she got married
Her typewriter became a cleaning rag.

I think the chorus is:
Steal Away, Steal Away
By sundown you'll be long gone on the faraway
Don't look back now, keep on moving
You'll be in New York by Monday
Steal Away

Other isolated lines:
A suitcase and some books were all she owned
Try to make a new life in the city
Find out can a woman stand alone

thanks a bunch folks!
Hugs
Mugs

Good song, Mugs. I couldn't find anything on it right away. I think the city is Provo, Utah, though.

Oh, I dunno. I'm a feminist myself, but I draw the line at leaving two kids in the lurch.

Why should two children left with their father be "in the lurch" I object to such blatent sexism from whichever gender it comes

SKYMONTERS with Hamid Hamilton Camp, on Elektra records EKS 75073, album from 1973, produced by Stephen Chapin (Harry Chapin's brother). Featuring 60s folk singer Bob (Hamilton) Camp. The whole album has a bunch of great songs on it. The album isn't impossible to find if one knows where to look for it, though it's not something that's readily available, either. Hope this helps.

Steal Away
(Hamilton Camp)

Alice Adams lived in Provo, Utah,
With three kids and a husband name of Joe.
They've been married 5 years come October.
Life in Provo, Utah's kinda slow.

Alice A. was quite a girl in college.
She edited the paper and the mag.
But after she got married, it was over -
Her typewriter became a cleaning rag.

Steal away, steal away,
By sunrise you'll be long gone on the faraway, faraway.
Don't look back now, keep on moving,
You'll be in New York by Monday.
Steal away, steal away.
Steal away, steal away.

Joey owned a hardware store in Provo;
He liked his meals at 7 and on time.
Pipe and slippers awaiting by his rocker,
His wife and TV both turned on by 9.

The walls began a-closing around Alice.
The house she once loved had become her tomb.
Though she loved her kids, she felt more like their keeper,
So she made her mind up one gray afternoon.

Steal away, steal away,
By sunrise you'll be long gone on the faraway, faraway.
Don't look back now, keep on moving,
You'll be in New York by Monday.
Steal away, steal away.
Steal away, steal away.

She whispered "fare thee well" and hit the highroad;
A suitcase and some books were all she owned.
Trying to make a new life in some city -
To find out can a woman stand alone.

Steal away, steal away,
By sunrise you'll be long gone on the faraway, faraway.
Don't look back now, keep on moving,
You'll be in New York by Monday.
Steal away, steal away.
Steal away, steal away.

Don't look back now, keep on moving,
You'll be in New York by Monday.
Steal away, steal away.
Steal away, steal away.

Camp's performance at Evanston's Amazingrace Coffeehouse

the song's also included on the 1980 Shanachie VHS release, "Bob Gibson in Concert".
