Subject: Why Bigger Is Better From: Clinton Hammond Date: 05 Oct 05 - 02:56 PM Or How Much Music Is In Your Collection.... ONLY with 66+ Gigs of MP3s would a random play go from LWIII's "I Wish I Was A Lesbian", to Leonard Cohen's "There Ain't No Cure For Love" withouth missing a beat... |
Subject: RE: Why Bigger Is Better From: Clinton Hammond Date: 05 Oct 05 - 03:12 PM The into Jethro Tull's "Kissing Willie"... Followed by Chris Rock's "No Sex In The Champagne Room" I'm of the opinion there's no such thing as too much music.... |
Subject: RE: Why Bigger Is Better From: Ebbie Date: 06 Oct 05 - 02:15 AM Clinton, I'm reading a biography of Woody Guthrie. When he wandered to California, the music crowd there included Leonard Slye, before he became Roy Rogers. After a gig, Slye reportedly said that he had finally realized what music is for- it makes people smile. |
Subject: RE: Why Bigger Is Better From: Clinton Hammond Date: 06 Oct 05 - 10:29 AM Makes people smile... It can make 'em cry... It sets toes to tappin, and feet to dancin... Sometimes, just sometimes it can even set minds to thinking and worlds to changing... So how much do you have? |
Subject: RE: Why Bigger Is Better From: Reagle Date: 06 Oct 05 - 10:31 AM 4,754 mp3's on my 'puter. Is that a lot? R |
Subject: RE: Why Bigger Is Better From: GUEST Date: 06 Oct 05 - 10:32 AM I asked a women if bigger was actually better, and she said YES without any doubt at all. |
Subject: RE: Why Bigger Is Better From: Clinton Hammond Date: 06 Oct 05 - 10:41 AM 14,500+ files in my big MP3 collection... but some of that is TV shows like The Tick, or music releated vids like The REAL Buddy Holly Story Anyone know a good Explorer Utility that will copy file names/paths as text??? |

Subject: RE: Why Bigger Is Better From: Reagle Date: 06 Oct 05 - 11:08 AM Phew Clinton makes me feel much better. For a while there I thought I was obsessive. :) R |
Subject: RE: Why Bigger Is Better From: Clinton Hammond Date: 06 Oct 05 - 11:39 AM You might well be Reagle... I just might have it worse than you :-) "ORganization is for sissies!!" Bull... with 65+ gigs of MP3s and other media files, organization is a MUST... :-P Heh |
Subject: RE: Why Bigger Is Better From: Peace Date: 06 Oct 05 - 11:40 AM Ograzinatoin--with you all the way. |
Subject: RE: Why Bigger Is Better From: GutBucketeer Date: 06 Oct 05 - 11:43 AM Right now I have 80+ CDs of MP3's focusing on the 1900's - 1940's. I think the count is around 20,000 MP3s. However, there are a lot of duplicates and I don't know how many unique versions I have. I have indexed them all by Artist, Title, and CD in MP3 Organizer which is a great program. I focus on collecting what I find that is OUT OF PRINT and recorded by DEAD artists. My purpose it to find and re-introduce great songs that may have been forgotten or lost. For example, how many people know of, or have heard the great Wendell Hall (A very popular early ukuelele player). Have I listened to Them all? No, but the library is there when I want to search for a song. JAB |
Subject: RE: Why Bigger Is Better From: Clinton Hammond Date: 06 Oct 05 - 11:44 AM JAB... We should have a web or FTP server between the two of us! :-) |
Subject: RE: Why Bigger Is Better From: Bill D Date: 06 Oct 05 - 11:48 AM well...28 gigs of (mostly) MP3s on HD...thats 4-5 thousand, I guess...(half of them Child Ballad versions)(and Everything from Tennesee Ernie to Mahalia Jackson)....and several thousand more RealAudio files on CD disks of Rose, the Record Lady's Country Music archives (acquired before she made them so you had to get one at a time).... add in about 600 LPs and a small collection of commercial CDs (I'm poor) and I suppose I could not play them all easily in my lifetime. and Clinton....I 'think' that the application you might want is an Explorer substitute called TrackerV3. (free for home use) It has an amazing array of tricks related to file management. The guy who wrote it posts regularly at the alt.comp.freeware newsgroup, and often answers questions there. |
Subject: RE: Why Bigger Is Better From: Bill D Date: 06 Oct 05 - 11:51 AM oh..BTW...I almost NEVER play stuff on 'random' setting....I get in a mood for certain types and certain artists, and have several player programs set to different types of playlists and with different sorting techniques... |
Subject: RE: Why Bigger Is Better From: Bill D Date: 06 Oct 05 - 11:54 AM and, about 'organization'...I have BOTH dbPowerAmp and MediaMonkey which have built-in database systems, so I can look up stuff under any criteria I wish...artist, title, date, genré,...etc.... |
Subject: RE: Why Bigger Is Better From: Bill D Date: 06 Oct 05 - 12:07 PM plus...I have my entire music collection under one master folder called 'songs', and I did a trick of right-clicking the toolbar and adding that folder as a permanent item on the toolbar, so I can click it and get a pop-up menu like you get when you click 'start'...I can then scroll down to any song or sub-directory and play it using a fast loading default player (right now, Foobar2000).... |
Subject: RE: Why Bigger Is Better From: Clinton Hammond Date: 06 Oct 05 - 12:12 PM "I almost NEVER play stuff on 'random' setting...." Random is what I use most... or I can select specific artists, organized by name... then Album by year... then track by number... |
Subject: RE: Why Bigger Is Better From: Clinton Hammond Date: 06 Oct 05 - 12:16 PM I'll give TrackerV3 a look... ta! |
Subject: RE: Why Bigger Is Better From: Bill D Date: 06 Oct 05 - 12:47 PM I just tried it Clinton...at the bottom of Tracker are some tabs...one is labeled 'reports' You highlight the items you want, check 'classic directory dump' and 'fixed file version' and click 'to clipboard' or 'to file' and you get a text list. |
Subject: RE: Why Bigger Is Better From: GutBucketeer Date: 06 Oct 05 - 01:53 PM Clinton: Will you be at the Getaway? If so, I'll bring a printout of my files to the Getaway. Maybe we can compare files and fill gaps, etc. Same goes for you Bill. JAB |
Subject: RE: Why Bigger Is Better From: Clinton Hammond Date: 06 Oct 05 - 02:01 PM I will not.... But we could find a place to post such LONG file lists... and maybe FTP information.... Obviously not here though |
Subject: RE: Why Bigger Is Better From: Bill D Date: 06 Oct 05 - 02:18 PM there are places online specifically for sharing large files now... http://www.megaupload.com/ is just one. I think there are even better. |
Subject: RE: Why Bigger Is Better From: Bill D Date: 06 Oct 05 - 02:21 PM a simple text list, even a long one, doesn't take much space anyway...and zipped it shouldn't be any real problem |
Subject: RE: Why Bigger Is Better From: Clinton Hammond Date: 06 Oct 05 - 02:22 PM I was thinking more a place where lists could just be hosted at TXT files... with FTP server information for sharing... |
Subject: RE: Why Bigger Is Better From: Bill D Date: 06 Oct 05 - 06:42 PM well, I'm sure those exist...I've seen FTP hosting places, but never had to do much more than upload to my own site. I know there are easy ways to set up FTP access on one's own site....just never went thru the steps. |
Subject: LYR ADD: It's Not The Size Of Your Slide From: GUEST,reggie miles Date: 06 Oct 05 - 07:31 PM I'm not so sure about that Clinton. For years I've played with what some folks have described as the biggest bottleneck slide they've ever seen. It's actually a frictionless marine propellershaft bearing that I found during one of my many garage sale visits. It took me a while to find an appropriate retort, but finally I began to quip back at those who would joke about it. "It's not the size of your slide, it's the slide of your size." Upon further reflection, this song emerged. It's been a sizable hit for me. I only wish I had a bottleneck slide version of it worked up. ;o) It's Not The Size Of Your Slide Reggie Miles © 2004 It's not the size of your slide, it's the slide of your size. Ain't no need to get jealous of the other guy's. Boys you better get hip to this tip to the wise. It's not the size of your slide, it's the slide of your size. A long time ago it used to be slick, To walk real soft and carry a big stick, But I'm here to remind all you big stick guys, It's not the size of your slide, it's the slide of your size. All you misters have heard sisters testify. It ain't the meat it's the motion that satisfies. I'd like to confirm that notion and dispel the lies. It's not the size of your slide, it's the slide of your size. All you hicks, diggin' me pick my licks, The way that I slip and glide. If you want all the girls to roll their eyes, It's not the size of your slide, it's the slide of your size. All you boys, makin' all that noise, I hope you now realize. Don't apologize for your merchandise. It's not the size of your slide, it's the slide of your size. If you listen to the words of this simple song, You'll know it don't matter if your length ain't long. Yes, I may be wrong, but I surmise. It's not the size of your slide, it's the slide of your size. |
Subject: RE: Why Bigger Is Better From: Steve-o Date: 06 Oct 05 - 07:54 PM With all their MP3s and TXTs and FTPs and V3s in their BVDs, I wonder how these guys can hold a guitar. |

Subject: RE: Why Bigger Is Better From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 07 Oct 05 - 12:19 PM My recorded music collection is modest, but I have about 500 MIDI's. leeneia |
Subject: RE: Why Bigger Is Better From: GUEST,Cluin Date: 08 Oct 05 - 12:14 AM About 500 CDs, 250 vinyl, unknown number of cassettes, (no 8-tracks anymore) and about 50 CD-RWs filled with MP3s. Not sure what that all adds up to--and there are a few duplicates in that mess--but all I know is, I'll probably never listen to it all again. |
