This is from Jon Raven's book "Turpin Hero"

Hope I do this right

One (D)day in Oc(G)tober neither(A)drunken nor sober
O'er (D)Broadbury (G)Down I was (A7)wending my (D)way
When I (Bm)heard of some(A)ringing,(D)some(G)dancing(D)and(A)singing
I(D)ought to re(G)member that(A7)Jubilee(D)Day

Chorus
T'was in(Bm)Ashwa(B7)ter (A)Town the(Bm)bells they (E7)did sound
They (D)rang for a(G)belt and a (A7)hat laced with (D)gold
But the(Bm)men of North (F#m)Lew rang so (Bm)steady (E7)and (A)true
That there (D)never were(G) better in (A7)Devon I (D)hold

I didn't know that was ever 'played'...thought it was strictly a vocal thing.

The book of 30 folk songs was published in 1974 when anything was acceptable in folk music.

See previous threads (that's a pretty good search engine, on the whole: you'll find it at the top of every page here).

"Chords" aren't given, but of course those will depend on what instrument you want to use to accompany yourself, and what key you want to sing it in. Do tell.

I'm not sure what point you are making here Malcolm.

I supplied chords for Guitar as 99% of requests are for that instrument. If it is for anything else people generally stipulate. Even if Keith had used Supersearch the results would not have fulfilled his request.

As for the key ..... transposition is quite simple.

Using C, F, G, and Em, you can pick out the melody with the thumb between verses. So if your voice range suits C, theat's a good way to do it.

C is my natural key for singing most folk songs, and, from the fact that most requests are answered with D or G suggestions, it seems that not many use it these days, so it tends to sound different, and fresh, when it is used.

PM me if you need more detail.

Don T.
