Not quite totally off the subject, but then, that is what some of us do best. I think Alice is a perfectly lovely name, and so do a great many others, including writers of songs.

Here are just a few, compliments of Levy.

Sweet Alice, the bright star of hope that sustains me,
when wayworn and faint, or with care I'm oppress'd

Oh! don't you remember sweet Alice, Ben Bolt,
Sweet Alice, with hair so brown

When first I saw your gentle eyes sweet Alice

Sweetly she sleeps, my Alice fair,
her cheek on her pillow pressed (my personal favorite of all these songs, especially as done by John McCormack)

Oh, lest we think all Alice songs are free from humor, how about:

Aurora Borie Alice, In your snowy crystal palace,
There's no girl in all the world compares to you (from Duke)

Come to think of it, after looking at the above, I should have said sweet, not lovely!

Alice you have my sympathy. I was All-i-SON" for years because everyone who heard my name thought it was Alice. Nicknames were "Peyton Place" "Allison Wonderland", etc. When I named my kids I tried to think of tease-free names. So now I have "Dylan the villain" and (shudder-) "Faggy Maggie". Kids will think of any way to tease! Especially in song (it's the folk process, you know- still alive and well in playgrounds). Allison-with-two-Ls

Thank you Annraoi, I was trying to ignore this thread, but I can't keep it back any longer. I was teased without mercy when I was a child because I had the old fashioned name of Alice, and this song was particularly used to insult me and make me cry. I HATED the name Alice, especially since my family all called me Colleen (my middle name) and I didn't know Alice was my first name until I started school. The meanest kids found it a particularly weird and demeaning name. No one else my age was named Alice.
I've used it since college, for almost 30 years. I love it now, but it was hell to live with as a child. Insults do hurt.

A certain young lady in Montana would not appreciate the sentiments of this song. Annraoi

i learned it with a mixture of all of the above...

alice, where are you going?
upstairs to take a bath
alice with legs like toothpicks
and a neck like a giraffe
fa-la-la-la -la -la

alice got in the bathtub
pulled out the plug and then
oh my goodness!
bless my soul!
there goes alice down the hole!
Alice, where are you going?
glug glug glug!!!

i used to have nightmares about this...

My mother sang, with some of the other words above:

Alice got in the bathtub,
She pulled the stopper out.
Oh, my goodness, bless my soul!
There goes Alice down the hole!
ALICE! Where art thou going?

Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, circa 1920?

I remember it as
Alice where are you going?
Upstairs to take a bath
Alice, legs like a toothpick,
Neck like a giraffe
Alice cliimbed in the bath tub,
Pulled out the plug and then
Oh my goodness, oh my soul
There goes Alice, down the hole
Alice, where are you going
Glug Glug Glug

Hey Alabama, I used to sing this when I was a bluebird in Michigan.

Alice, where are you going? Upstairs to take a bath.
Alice with legs like toothpicks, and a long neck like a giraffe.
Alice where are you going?
(Spoken) Oh my goodness, oh my soul, There goes Alice down the hole!

Go figure,
Margarita
