Subject: Happy! - Oct 12 (Cyril) From: Abby Sale Date: 12 Oct 05 - 04:12 PM Happy Birthday! But with sadness... Cyril Tawney was born 12th October, 1930. (died 21 Apr 2005 from complications of a Mycobacterium cheloneae infection) Cyril was the long-reigning sea god and professionally sang folk songs for a living longer than anyone else in Britain. Born into a lower-deck Royal Navy family, he joined as a 16 year-old and served in a variety of craft, but mainly submarines. He bought himself out of the Service 3rd May 1959 and embarked on a professional folk singing career. He made a special study of maritime songs and songs of the South West of England. [Thanx Rosemary] [See Official Cyril Tawney pages & also Selected English Folksingers] If Will Rogers "never met a man he didn't like," it's hard to imagine anyone meeting Cyril that didn't like him. Not only a wonderful singer and songwriter, Cyril was ever kind and generous with his time, knowledge and efforts. Copyright © 2005, Abby Sale - all rights reserved What are Happy's all about?
