There's many a man of the Cameron Clan
CHORUS: I hear the pibroach sounding, sounding,
Oh! proudly they walk; but each Cameron knows,
The moon has arisen, it shines o'er the path |
Subject: RE: March of Cameron Men From: Teru Date: 09 Mar 97 - 06:52 PM Dear Sandy, Thank you very much for your help. The lyrics are what I have looked for. I also thank you to introduce the Cameron Clan Home Paged to me. It is really a nice home page with the melody of "The March of Cameron Men"! With my kindest regards. Teru (Teruhiko Kachi, Japan) |
Subject: RE: March of Cameron Men From: Jim Dixon Date: 04 Jul 03 - 12:50 AM This web page attributes the song to Mary Maxwell Campbell, 1829. This web page (among several others) gives a somewhat different version of the chorus. It also has a midi file.
Deep o'er the mountain and glen While light springing footsteps Are trampling the heath. 'Tis the march of the Cameron men. 'Tis the march, 'tis the march, 'Tis the march of the Cameron men.
1. Chan 'eil oganach treun de chloinn Chamshroin gu leir Nach teid deonach fo Bhrataich Loch Ial Gu buaidh no gu bas's bidh iad dileas 's gach cas, Oir geill cha tug Camshronach riamh. SEISD: Nach cluinn sibh fuaim na pioba tighinn Gu h-ard thar monadh is ghleann; Agus cas cheuman Eutrom a'saltairt an fhraoich 'S i caismeachd Chloinn Chamshroin a th'ann! 'S i th'ann! 'S i th'ann! S i caismeachd Chloinn Chamshroin a th'ann! 2. O! 's uallach an ceum, ged tha fios aig treun Gum faod e 'bh maireach 'san uir; Ach gach armuinn, gun sgath, theid le 'Cheannard do'n bhlar Far'm bu dual dhaibh buaidh agus cliu. SEISD 3. Tha 'ghealach ag eiridh, 's tha gathan air ceuman Nan oigear tha treun agus fior; 'S rad dochas an cleibh, 's thuirt an Ceannard e fein Gur laoch iad nach geill anns an stri. SEISD |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: March of the Cameron Men From: GUEST,Q Date: 04 Jul 03 - 01:02 AM The chorus given by Jim Dixon is the way Kenneth McKellar sang it on the LP, The Tartan. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: March of the Cameron Men From: GUEST Date: 07 Aug 06 - 08:24 AM Does anyone know if the Gaelic song above (Caismeachd Chloinn Chamshroin) has ever been recorded? Although I have several versions of The March of the Cameron Men I can find nothing on the net to show that the Gaelic words have been put on LP or CD. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: March of the Cameron Men From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 07 Aug 06 - 01:02 PM Nothing definite and no Gaelic recording found. It seems likely that both Gaelic and English were written by Mary Maxwell Campbell, from what little I cab find on the song. The Bodleian has several broadsheets, printed c. 1850 and later, but they are English only. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: March of the Cameron Men From: GUEST Date: 07 Aug 06 - 09:02 PM Thanks Q, with so much Gaelic material being recorded it may still happen. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: March of the Cameron Men From: GUEST Date: 08 Aug 06 - 04:22 PM The March of th Cameron Men is a piece of pure Victoriana. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: March of the Cameron Men From: Hillheader Date: 08 Aug 06 - 05:11 PM At the risk of thread creep, does anyone know the words the regimental song of the Cameronian Scottish Rifles (not the Cameron Highlanders!) My uncle used to sing it many many years ago and now it is but a distant memory. I think the first line was "Have you seen the Cameronians?" The tune was quite pacy akin to "Michael Finnigan!". I know it's not much to go on guys but you have performed miracles in the past and I am only asking for one more. Thanks in advance Davebhoy |
