Subject: RE: Canadian Folk Music Awards From: Sandy Mc Lean Date: 17 Oct 05 - 07:03 PM Hull, Quebec has been renamed as Vanier so it no longer exists. |

Subject: RE: Canadian Folk Music Awards From: Sandy Mc Lean Date: 17 Oct 05 - 07:05 PM LOL, It still exists , of course but not as Hull. |
Subject: RE: Canadian Folk Music Awards From: bobad Date: 17 Oct 05 - 07:07 PM I believe it has been renamed as Gatineau Sandy. |
Subject: RE: Canadian Folk Music Awards From: Sandy Mc Lean Date: 17 Oct 05 - 07:24 PM Thanks bobad! I stand corrected. It was the other Ottawa suburb of Eastview (Ontario side of the river) that was re-named Vanier. Sandy |

Subject: RE: Canadian Folk Music Awards From: Beer Date: 17 Oct 05 - 10:25 PM I like in Quebec but I still call it Hull. Some things just stay with you. |

Subject: RE: Canadian Folk Music Awards From: GUEST,Betsy Date: 18 Oct 05 - 07:22 AM Well done Canada for supporting the genre and recognising the people who add vibrancy to your young country, with it's rich cultural and diverse background . Hang on to it all, and not like us Brits who have took it all for granted and then start moaning when clubs start closing and no new blood coming along . Even the "new-blood" which comes along are instantly turned into mini-stars who are rarely seen at grass rootsvenues. |

Subject: RE: Canadian Folk Music Awards From: sian, west wales Date: 18 Oct 05 - 11:21 AM Great idea. Hope it doesn't get bogged down in the 'what is folk' argument. And ... it'll always be Hull to me. I had a shock when I found out there was one in England too. siân |

Subject: RE: Canadian Folk Music Awards From: black walnut Date: 18 Oct 05 - 11:33 AM I just got back from the OCFF conference in Kingston Ontario. Folk music in this part of Canada is alive and well! I could have used a little more 'trad', but there was some of it, and some blues, and a variety of groups and solo acts. I know some of the organizers of the Canadian Folk Music Awards - they are tireless, selfless, and totally passionate about the folk scene in all its shapes and forms. I am really looking forward to watching this awards celebration take flight! ~b.w. |

Subject: RE: Canadian Folk Music Awards From: Paco Rabanne Date: 24 Nov 05 - 06:20 AM I live in Hull... or rather I used to as it has been renamed as Quebec |
Subject: RE: Canadian Folk Music Awards From: greg stephens Date: 24 Nov 05 - 06:36 AM So why do they have a best songwriter(English) category but not any other language? |
Subject: RE: Canadian Folk Music Awards From: GUEST Date: 24 Nov 05 - 09:53 AM They do have best french also. They only posted in the french translation of the awards. |
Subject: RE: Canadian Folk Music Awards From: black walnut Date: 24 Nov 05 - 02:07 PM Um, no, Guest, don't think so. I just spoke with one of the organizers, who told me that as this is the first year of doing these awards, they were unable to get the required number of nominations for two of of the categories - but they hope and expect to have a full slate of categories next year. The categories missing from this year's awards include: Best Songwriter - French and Best Album - For Children ~b.w. |
Subject: RE: Canadian Folk Music Awards From: Clinton Hammond Date: 24 Nov 05 - 04:26 PM "James Keelaghan/Album-Then Again/Label-Jericho Beach Music" ??? For what amounts to a "Greatest Hits Revisited" album? Don't get me wrong, I love Jim's work and it's a great cd, but nominated for best writing?!?! Doesn't seem right at all... "The Waking Hour/Artist-David Francey/Label-Jericho Beach Music" That's who -I'm- rooting for!! Seems to me the best music in that list is in the "Pushing The Boundaries" category... |
Subject: RE: Canadian Folk Music Awards From: black walnut Date: 05 Dec 05 - 08:01 AM Maybe an award's first year is allowed to gobble up all of the best songwriting of the past, Clinton?! A big group is going up to Ottawa next weekend from Toronto for the awards. Making folk history. I won't be among them, sadly enough. Anyone here going? Sounds like a great show! (Wish they'd televise it on CBC...) ~b.w. |
Subject: RE: Canadian Folk Music Awards From: black walnut Date: 05 Dec 05 - 10:53 AM Shoot, Clinton. Now you've got me listening to The Waking Hour. When I should be transcribing some piano music into harpability. My favs from this CD: The Waking Hour Highway 95 Morning Rain Ashtabula Tonight in my Dreams Over You Wanna Be Loved Gone What a great songwriter/singer/guy. ~b.w. |

Subject: RE: Canadian Folk Music Awards From: breezy Date: 06 Dec 05 - 08:15 AM rubbish the 'waking hour' samples - all 20 seconds @ - sent me to sleep very quickly, did not interest me whatsoever. it is simply boring and i couldnt see how it was 'folk' related. O K so we are spoilt with Kate Rusby who has us in a different league alltogether As for george papavgeris, well he writes 'folk' songs Canada are missing out not knowing about Dan Mackinnon just like it did with Stan Rogers |
Subject: RE: Canadian Folk Music Awards From: RoyH (Burl) Date: 06 Dec 05 - 10:02 AM Very pleased to see Finest Kind in there. Looking forward to their UK tour in summer '06. But I'm surprised to find no mention of Grit Laskin, a great contributor to Canada's folk scene, surely? Burl |
Subject: RE: Canadian Folk Music Awards From: Clinton Hammond Date: 06 Dec 05 - 10:11 AM "i couldnt see how it was 'folk' related" That doesn't surprise me... Your loss Breezy... Just like anybody who don't grok David Francey... |
Subject: RE: Canadian Folk Music Awards From: black walnut Date: 06 Dec 05 - 10:16 AM Breezy, I adore Kate Rusby (and play all of her CDs and her DVD incessantly) but that doesn't mean I can't and don't adore David Francey as well. He's a treasure. And there are many of us here who believe it. It's too bad that you think that this is the place and thread to poke holes in our 'knowledge' of folk music. We have an awful lot to proud of here in Canada, and I'm sorry to hear you being sore about it. Yes, Burl, Finest Kind is top of the ladder. So is Grit Laskin, but he is one of the founders/organizers of the CFMA's. So he can hardly be nominated, can he? :) Perhaps they should start a category for makers of folk instruments...Grit would win upside~down and sideways. ~b.w. |

Subject: RE: Canadian Folk Music Awards From: RoyH (Burl) Date: 06 Dec 05 - 01:40 PM Hi Black Walnut, I didn't know that about Grit, True enough he could hardly be nominated. But he IS a great contributor and has been for many years and in many ways. He is one of those movers and shakers who's talents benefit a wide range of people in the folk community. Not least those who play his wonderful guitars. If you see him please give him my regards. |

Subject: RE: Canadian Folk Music Awards From: black walnut Date: 06 Dec 05 - 04:14 PM Breezy - you've redeemed yourself! Thank you. And I'm sure Mr. Francey thanks you as well. (Him being one of the nicest kindest souls on the planet and all). Burl - I couldn't agree with you more. Grit has his finger in many pies. I won't be able to make the trek up to Ottawa myself this weekend (sadly - whine), but I've passed along your hello to Grit via email. Hellooooo Grit! ~b.w. |

Subject: RE: Canadian Folk Music Awards From: Songsmith Date: 10 Dec 05 - 01:57 AM Breezy, I note your comment on Dan McKinnion and certainly agree. There is a change in the wind however as Dan picked up a few MIANS nominations and I also see he's got a spot during the ECMAs in P.E.I. His las effort with Paul Mills is a gem. He's starting to make a ripple in the big pond. This could be his year on the east coast at least. Later Jim |

My friend Eve Goldberg is presenting the Traditional Category Award in honour of her mother Susan Goldberg who passed away earlier this year. I'm sure there will be lots of singing and stories and photo-ops - Eve and Ellen have gone all out with special glizty outfits from Value Village! I'm thinking of you all! Wish I could be there! ~b.w. |
