And for all you people further south, New Scorpion Band are presenting their two hour show 'Bold Nelson's Praise' in Margate (at the Theatre Royal) on Friday 21st, in Dorchester (at the Museum) on the 22nd and in London (at Cecil Sharp House) on the 23rd. It's a fantastic show, with the songs and tunes woven together with actual accounts from and descriptions of the battle - and the Scorps usual astonishing array of 30-odd acoustic instruments.

But, I thought shanties weren't allowed on Royal navy vessels. I'd 'ave thought that a bit more Gilbert and Sullivan would do. "Oh! We give three cheers and one cheer more" etc..

Forebitter songs like Spanish Ladies would have been known aboard King's ships, and shanties too even though not used as work songs.

Hugill says stamp-and-go shanties like The Drunken Sailor were the only kind allowed in "the King's Navee"
