Many happy returns of the day to the wise one (except where his attachment to a certain Canadian ham is concerned....).

Hope you have a really good day mate!

He would be such a swell guy if it weren't for his...obsession. I hope that he has a very nice celebration of his natal day. Perhaps Chongo will provide a cake.

But from the far, far West, where men are men and women wear jeans too, here's a present.

First time I met LH was during my first night at the local coffeehouse/open stage in Elmvale Ontario, about 10 years ago. I remember blinking a couple times at the sight of that hair, that phenomenal collection of harmonicas, the guitar, the general "air" about this stranger - turned to my friend and said "Hey! That guy looks just like Bob Dylan!"

ANd my friend laughed and said "WEll, make sure you tell him that. He'd like it!"

So eat your heart out, Bob Dylan! - and Happy Birthday, Little Hawk!

In lieu of singing "Happy Birthday", perhaps reprising this little ditty would be appropriate.

To the tune of the "The Addams Family Theme", if you please, complete with finger-snaps.

His name is Little Hawka
A broke-dick mamalucca
A real lame-assed Cannucka
He is fucked up, you see

A jagoff and a honkey
His best friend is a monkey
His room smells kinda funky
He is fucked up, you see

Doodle-dee-doo (snap, snap)
Doodle-dee-doo (snap, snap)
Doodle-dee-doo
Doodle-dee-doo
Doodle-dee-doo (snap, snap)

Bill Shatner is his hero
A man with talent, zero
We hope that it is clear, oh
He is fucked up you see

He has these alter-egos
Like Shane. They're his amigos
They go wherever he goes
He is fucked up, you see

Doodle-dee-doo (snap, snap)
Doodle-dee-doo (snap, snap)
Doodle-dee-doo

Well, what a nice surprise! Here I was figuring on a day where absolutely nothing unusual happens...

I am touched. (You already knew that, right?)

Rapaire, that is a wonderful present! Thank you so much.

Daylia - Yeah, I remember that night. I was doing my best Dylan impression, which was certainly my joy in those days. It's a pity that Bob has not aged as well as I have. He is only about 7 1/2 years older than me, but looks like, well...let's just say I hope I don't look like that in 7 1/2 years! Ouch. I'll say this, though, he's a tenacious character. Just keeps performing. I'm not sure I could handle half of what he has had to put up with since he first went on the road.

Back in the early 70's I was living in my first "shared accomodation" place with several other young people. We were all members of that baby boomer generation. It was the days of almost mandatory blue jeans, long hair, lots of leather clothing, wide belts, flares, and all that stuff. I was tremendously idealistic about the youth movement, and figured that we were "all in it together", and were going to change the world. Yeah.

Dylan would have laughed at such a notion by '65, but I guess he felt that way too back around '59-63. Then he changed his mind about it.

Anyway, I had started growing my hair, since long hair was a kind of religious thing to me. The other things I was religious about were:

My guitar - loved it to death, and played and polished it a lot.

Women - admired them tremendously and was usually in love with someone who was in love with someone else or else just didn't really know I existed.

Political causes - I was a real Joan Baez type by nature. She and Bob Dylan and Buffy Sainte-Marie, after all, were the people I had based my life upon at that point. I hated Richard Nixon with a passion, and was pretty militant when it came to Vietnam.

Anyway, my experience in that house with several other young people was a daunting one. It took me about a year to realize that they were not...ummm...quite as idealistic about most things as I was. Nope. They were looking for their next party or "good time", that's all. They gave less than a tinker's damn about what was happening to Vietnamese villagers, blacks, poor people, 3rd Worlders, or really anyone at all except themselves....but they lived the style. Oh yeah. The style was everywhere.

I had great long hair, but was the only person in the house who did not smoke either dope or cigarettes. Joan Baez was also a bit unusual in that respect at the time. She had remarked once to the press, "It's silly to make marijuana illegal. Of course...it's silly to smoke it too!" (with, no doubt, a twinkle in her eye) She got almost everyone mad when she said that!

Seems Joan and I thought the same way on that one.

Well, this one girl who lived in the house thought she'd say something sweet to me one day, and she remarked to me, "The only thing you like about yourself is your hair..."

Umm. Lovely remark. She had it wrong. I also liked the fact that I wasn't anywhere near as mean as her.

It amazes me when I think back. I was so incredibly idealistic about the whole youth movement thing, and I was living with these people who just literally didn't give a f**k. It was like being in a shark pit.

So I moved out of there. Whew.

I was about ready to write my own "Positively Fourth Street". You can guess why I liked those angry Dylan songs from '65 and '66. I think he was deeply pissed off by being surrounded by people who were all hung up on style, outer image, financial gain, one-upmanship, superficial surface appearance, and playing these vicious little personal power games with each other, just to feel like they had something over somebody.

My God. Is that what we're here for?

A whole lot of birthdays have come and gone down the pike since then. I have noticed that most people develop a good deal more compassion as they get older. It's a good thing. The casual cruelty of the young (specially in school) can be astounding.

Anyway, I am going to take some quite time today, and just meditate on all that has gone past. One wonders how much is yet to come.

Here's to Dylan, Baez, Buffy, Winona, dachshunds, Shatner, Chongo, hamsters, free range iguanas, and all you wonderful people here who have thought to send me your good wishes! "May God bless and keep you always. May you stay forever young."

Thanks for mentioning Shane! I should've done that.

Ha! I played the game twice, and Shatner atomized Jean-Luc twice by whipping out his phaser (set to kill) at the crucial moment. I like the chest-baring move too. VERY devastating!

Bill, you just go on from one glorious achievment to another. You are truly unstoppable. That woman in Kentucky who gave you the finger and said "Kirk sucks! Picard rules!" was obviously a lowbred cretin deserving of being run through a trash compacter. I found a VERY rare K-tel double album of stuff by you not long ago in a collectors' store, and my friend, Johhny Death has put it on CD for me. It's mind-bogglingly terrific. I kid you not. Johnny was very impressed by the material on it, and has now joined the legions of those who hold you in deep respect. Another convert! Life is good!

It was a nice day. I went out for dinner with Raptor, and we had ribs at Montana's in Barrie. We did NOT tell them it was my birthday, because they raise all hell when you do that, and put an antlered moose helmet on your head as the crowning touch. That I can definitely do without.

Raptor was more subdued than usual...the poor man's been working too hard.

Well, I am home now, and planning on a quiet, peaceful night. Chongo has gone back to Chicago. He got hired by a cool dame to solve a hot case...or was it the other way around? She was tall and dark. The usual. I hope he gets well paid in advance. I've warned him about that. His trench coat is threadbare and he needs a new fedora desperately. He drives a car that would look old even in Cuba. The gumshoe business just ain't what it used to be. Kind sad, actually.

Well, gol danged....

STOP THE PRESSES!!!!!

LH, accordin' to the powers at be, is another year older and supposedly wiser???

Well, I was gonna bake you a cake and send it to ya' but, hey, the local Dept od Homeland Security folks would have intercepted it in the name of homeland security and eaten it themselves...

So all I gotta offer ya is another day day of peaceful esxistence and the knowledge there is on particular rock that I dug out here outside on Luray that has LH write all over it... It is the rock of rocks an' on this day of yer birth, I give you ownership of this rock, however...

It is a friggin' rock and seein' as you now own it (if one can own a rock...) or are responsible fir its well-being, I figured that fir as little as $17.95 a month the Bobert could go out on yer behalf and talk with and jive with yer rock...

Ahhhh, sorry, no paypal, but have a great B-Day...

Bobert

Speaking of hair. I checked out your photo. Is it recent? How old are you today? Are you still sporting a mullet?

Bobert, he can't possibly get any wiser. Anyway, we know he is old enough now that we shouldn't trust him.

Thanks to the last few posters! Dianavan, 2 of those pictures are fairly recent. How old am I? Ancient. But not as ancient as Bob Dylan. I'm well preserved. The top one was in 1999, the middle one in 2000. The one at the bottom was I think around 1972 or '73. Man, that was nice hair...

Why are they all showing up twice though?

I didn't even know that kind of haircut was called a "mullet" until just a few years ago. When I blow it with a hairdryer, it looks like Dylan's haircut in '66. I like that.

Shane also has a sort of a mullet, but it's more one length than mine, and he has a mustache and usually a several days' growth five O'Clock shadow. His hair is kind of "dirty blonde". (and it's REAL dirt too!) Like me, he has a good deal of Scottish blood, but that's where the similarities end. "Flippin' right, eh?!"

Bobert, I'm thinkin' about the rock offer. Very generous of you. I'm thinkin'. Yep. I'll get back to you in a bit. Yep. Fer sure, eh?

Carol - Gideon (the monkey) says "Hi!".

Metchosin - Thanks for the good wishes!
