Subject: happy? - Oct 19 (Sandwich invented) From: GUEST Date: 19 Oct 05 - 08:05 AM The Earl* invents the sandwich on 10/19/1747 (some say Aug 6, 1762). However, we know from Folk Song that it was only a re-invention.
Gen. 25:29-34, Esau came back hungry from hunting, and sold his birthright (as first-born) to his younger fraternal twin Jacob for "bread and lentil stew." - BW] *That is, John Montagu, Viscount Hinchingbrooke, Baron Montagu of Saint Neots (1718-1792). And first lord of the Admiralty (1748–51) and 1771–82 during the American Revolution. He invented this snack, contrary to all known lordly rules of etiquette so that he would have more time to concentrate on running the British navy. Others say to play cards. Others (Burke's) say both. Having invented and named the sandwich, he named himself after it, becoming 4th Earl of Sandwich. It was something of a stretch since he had to retroactively name his (as I count) great, great grandfather (skipping his father) as the first Earl of Sandwich. Subject: RE: happy? - Oct 19 (Sandwich invented) From: Le Scaramouche Date: 19 Oct 05 - 12:58 PM Government business was often run over a game of cards. Lentil stew is delicious, but nowadays, rice is added. |
Subject: RE: happy? - Oct 19 (Sandwich invented) From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 19 Oct 05 - 02:32 PM Now so, Le S. Got several good ones, no rice involved. |
Subject: RE: happy? - Oct 19 (Sandwich invented) From: Le Scaramouche Date: 19 Oct 05 - 02:44 PM The sort made in the Levant is. Mjadra. |
Subject: RE: happy? - Oct 19 (Sandwich invented) From: GUEST,Joe_F Date: 19 Oct 05 - 08:43 PM I thought Hillel invented it. %^) --- Joe Fineman joe_f@verizon.net ||: If I were a cassowary on the sands of Timbuctoo, I would eat a missionary, coat and bands and hymnbook, too. :
Subject: RE: happy? - Oct 19 (Sandwich invented) From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 19 Oct 05 - 09:38 PM Oh, come now! Rice in mjadra? Should be only lentils, bulgar and onions. |
Subject: RE: happy? - Oct 19 (Sandwich invented) From: GUEST,wld Date: 20 Oct 05 - 12:10 AM You know as a story that always sounded like bollocks to me. Surely people have been sticking stuff between bits of bread since before the 18th century. It hardly needed some nob to invent it. Its a bit like claiming to be the first person to invent wiping your bum. Check it out with Irish contingent. they always claim to have invented everything. I bet one of them made a ham sandwich first, AND wiped his bum before anybody else. Before him though, things were a bit of a mess. |
Subject: RE: happy? - Oct 19 (Sandwich invented) From: Mark Cohen Date: 20 Oct 05 - 02:04 AM I hear he claimed to have invented Hawaii, too. Cheeky. Aloha, Mark |
Subject: RE: happy? - Oct 19 (Sandwich invented) From: GUEST,Le Scaramouche Date: 20 Oct 05 - 09:22 AM Bulgur is used in other things, Q, like tabooleh. The way I know mjadra, the way everyone seems to eat it is rice, lentils, onions and hard, white cheese (last two optional). |
Subject: RE: happy? - Oct 19 (Sandwich invented) From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 20 Oct 05 - 12:14 PM Mark, didn't the Hawaiians make sandwiches of that British explorer who forgot his manners? "Everyone seems to eat it"- Must be a UK variation, like Chop Suey and Ginger Beef are American variations on 'Chinese' food. |
Subject: RE: happy? - Oct 19 (Sandwich invented) From: Le Scaramouche Date: 20 Oct 05 - 05:41 PM UK variation? Hardly. I live in northern Israel. |
Subject: RE: happy? - Oct 19 (Sandwich invented) From: Elmer Fudd Date: 20 Oct 05 - 08:42 PM Do you have a recipe for mjadra to pass along? Never heard of it out where I come from. It sounds delish. Brown or red lentils? |
Subject: RE: happy? - Oct 19 (Sandwich invented) From: Elmer Fudd Date: 20 Oct 05 - 08:44 PM PS: I agree about the idea of a sandwich being "invented" by an individual being absurd. Nice for ol' Earl that he got the credit, though. Elmer |
Subject: RE: happy? - Oct 19 (Sandwich invented) From: GUEST,Joe_F Date: 20 Oct 05 - 09:02 PM H. L. Mencken, in an article on sausages, gave Jewish delicatessen owners (in the U.S.) credit for inventing the ham & cheese sandwich. (Previously, he said, there had only been ham sandwiches and cheese sandwiches.) I suspect a certain malice. --- Joe Fineman joe_f@verizon.net ||: First you find out that there is no Santa Claus, then that there is no God, and then that there are no grownups. :
Subject: RE: happy? - Oct 19 (Sandwich invented) From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 20 Oct 05 - 11:28 PM Well, Le S, the recipes will just have to fight it out! So as not to overburden this thread with digression, I will post in a new thread in the next day or so. |
Subject: RE: happy? - Oct 19 (Sandwich invented) From: GUEST,Art Thieme Date: 20 Oct 05 - 11:48 PM Peanut butter and jelly must've been a mess to eat before putting it on a casing of sliced bread! Not very satisfying at all. And it would've been really hard to control all those little white granules when striving to down a sandwich made of my personal favorite lower-cal ingredients, peanut butter and aspartame!!
